'Unlikely' tag on vacation?

I generally like to sip water, drink it slowly unless I'm parched.  What am I going to do, have a bunch of water blobs hanging around?  What am I going to keep them in...a plastic container?

This was my question as well. If the whole thing is edible as they suggest, then you need some packaging to keep it clean... and if you're not going to eat the whole membrane then I still wonder how easy it would be to pop the thing.

But, maybe the tech will have some other application that will be useful, like drug delivery or similar.

I believe watermelons have existed for quite some time.

I drink water out of a glass I filled from the tap. Like Mother Nature intended.

So we'll be getting water through a cucumber.

At the end of that video, the girl holding up the membrane looked like she was holding up a used condom.
/I would let her hold up my used condom, IYKWIM...

The empty blob at the end of the video looked like a used condom. Hmmm...edible condoms anyone?

How 'bout just Jello?  That is largely all water and completely disposable.

I think this exists already, in a format fortified with vitamins and minerals as well. It's called "fruit".

I see I'm not the only one questioning how you'll carry these blobs. Will they hold up to being knocked around in a backpack? Do they melt if they get too warm?

It's has potential, but they still have some work to do.

So....they've invented grapes?

If only people understood WHY we use firm containers.
It's almost like these people have never carried containers from one place to another.

plus, generally, when I am drinking water from a bottle, I try not to lick the outside of the container.
not sure why
maybe dirt and germs?

The blob brings up memories of mung for some odd reason.

This whole concept of reducing trash generated from every day items is really, how do I put this, it's on fire. A lot of us are making a lot of big money right now. Sure, it sounds gross and weird to eat your water bottle, but in a few months, it's going to see like nothing once my edible toilet paper hits the market. You wad it up and cram it in your butt. Then when you're done pooping, you simply pull a sheet or two out, clean your bottom, and then you eat the paper. It comes in three flavors: cinnamon, anise, and chocolicious.

"Goldfish Bowl," Robert A. Heinlein writing as Anson MacDonald, sometime in the 1940s.

Next?

The obvious flaw with edible containers is that they are not hygienic.  In order to make them hygienic they need to be washed, as you might wash an apple before eating it, or be stored in yet another container to keep the germs off them.

also 2c per package?   Thailand's bag-o-fanta drink baggies are a hundred times cheaper than that.

Well, if they're edible, then I assume they're also water-soluble, which would go a long way towards addressing the issue of so much plastic ending up in landfills.

Maybe you don't eat the "bottle," but if you throw it on the ground and the next rainfall makes it melt into biodegradable sludge, I'd still call that a pretty strong win. Maybe you could poke a straw through it like a CapriSun.
