JuggleGeek: I'm pretty convinced you shouldn't be able to get shrimp, lobster, steak, soda, or alcohol with food stamps.  If you want to eat the nice stuff, get a farking job.  No cookies, no chips and salsa, no breakfast cereal made out of sugar.  Just basic food.

Food stamps should keep you alive, eating canned foods, beans, rice, peanut butter sandwiches and similar.

I'm pretty sure you can't get alcohol with food stamps, but why should people be prohibited from buying those other things?

vudukungfu: cig-mkr: maybe if we delivered the food to them.............

That is how the food shelf I work at works.
You put in for how many meals. We cook and deliver and I mean to some scary rural places.
I make sure there are microwave popcorns for kids for movie night.
Little extras can make or break memories.
Having a snack when you can't afford it can make your weekend.

Kudos to you, very admirable of you to donate your time and money to help others. I'm sure it is most appreciated.  Thank you.

cig-mkr: Back in the 50's people actually had to go to Welfare and pick up their boxes of food. All that was in the box was government peanut butter, cheese, powdered milk, and foods that were a basic necessities.
Well, that was too demeaning so they went to food stamps. That's when the fraud began, people would sell them for pennies on the dollar just for the cash for beer and smokes. Well the stigma of ripping coupons out of a book in front of other people in line was too much for some people and insulting.
Along came the credit card type WIC cards so people wouldn't be humiliated after they bought their foodstuffs and drove off in their Lincoln.
Not all recipients are rip offs, and people truly need help and it's the frauds that need to be slammed when caught.
/ maybe if we delivered the food to them.............

People would still be able to sell the foodstuffs. Not that it'd be a good idea, but addictive drugs tend to impair one's fiscal judgement.

There was a story not long ago about depressed areas of Appalachia where soda cans (in packs) function as a sort of alternative currency (since they can be bought with food stamps).

WIC still exists as coupons. Each coupon is redeemable for a specific list of items. The items actually are pretty much staples like milk, beans, cheese, vegetables etc.

SNAP is the electronic benefits card. Alcohol cannot be purchased with it, but pretty much all other foods can be.

These are not the same program.

They stole an entire store?

Maybe I missed it but I did not see the mention of "welfare" in the article.

Sounds like someone has been taking business ideas from movies again.  If it doesn't work in a movie, it will fail in real life as well.
