From an olde phart's perspective, another interesting footnote is the coverage of that event relative to any "news" event of today. Radio programs reported it as breaking news and teachers in schools (I was in school at the time) were informed by the principal going around to classrooms and informing them.  Somebody in the school stayed by a radio to listen to the latest reports, but they were few - the local infrastructure was damaged enough that a lot of communications were compromised; rescue efforts were considered more important that news coverage.  News stories came over the wires but photos and video were still done on film and had to be developed and printed before they could be distributed.  It was a major story on Cronkite and Huntley-Brinkley but it wasn't the only story.  It was a major headline in the newspapers.

While it was certainly a big story and it was certainly devastating to Alaskans, it took something like the Kennedy Assassination to push everything else off the air in terms of news coverage.  I think one of the reasons was that news anchors didn't have 24 hours to fill and, thus, were not given to blathering on when no information was available.

Lenny_da_Hog: The USGS video is nice for explaining what happened, but this video has footage taken during the actual quake, only a few miles from the epicenter in Valdez.

You can see the floor of Prince William Sound open up and the ocean pour in. Just afterwards, the ocean floor drops and causes the Tsunami that destroys Valdez.

I've seen that video before, pretty scary stuff.  But re-watching it now, it looks like they spliced in a number of stock video clips of waves and a some manual camera shaking for dramatic effect.

The subsequent tsunami sure packed a punch...

Actually, I feel this photo needs a better caption.

I'm more thinking:
"I think I've found the problem with your car."

T-Servo: And Sarah Palin was born 50 years ago last month. This can't be a coincidence.

Sarah is from Idaho, so your point is?

Talked to a friend yesterday who's a senior emergency management type.  They've been running a drill for a response to another 9.2 earthquake timed to the 50th anniversary.  Link

Some of the drills and practice can be timely: a week ago Snohomish County Emergency Management had a helicopter out practicing rescues when the Oso landslide happened.  They were the first on the scene, pulling out three people.

I was in Fairbanks. Even that far away everything was swaying back and forth.
No other quake I've been in compares to what that was like.

Satanic_Hamster: Obviously, this happened because God was upset over gay marriage and no further earthquake or volcano monitoring is needed in that state.

Between the mudslide in OR, and the quakes in CA last week, I would be seriously moving east if I lived anywhere west of the Mississippi.  Even the Madrid fault seems solid compared to the whole west coast.

Stay safe, farkers.

I seem to remember my dad telling us a story about this - he was in the Navy and they got the call to go up and provide assistance. When they arrived, they couldn't find the town they were supposed to dock in, and when they finally made contact with someone, they asked where the dock was. The guy told them that they were a mile inland, and that the town with the dock had just kinda...vanished.

/Sketchy on the details, I'll call him later today and ask him about it...

If something like this happened now it'd be a month before the news would report anything else.

I talked to a guy that was in Anchorage during the quake.  He said he was a very young boy, and all he remembered was looking out his front window, and watching the family car go back and forth, up and down the driveway.

Oh, and his mom freaking out.

and Lo... in 1964 an angel broke the 4th seal and I heard a voice proclaim "behold, the harbinger of doom, Sarah Palin does come."

I am sure I read that in revelations somewhere...
