Johnny Carson once said Chevy "couldn't ad-lib a fart after a baked-bean dinner"

Still miss you, Mr. Carson, you were The Best.

in Donald Fagen's new very, very enjoyable book of essays / diary, "Eminent Hipsters", he writes of late 60s house parties/jam sessions in New York with Chevy Chase on drums, saying something like, "Chevy kept amazing time behind me and Walter", speaking of a proto-Steely Dan.

Chevy's on my "sorry, not funny" list with Jerry Lewis, et. al. as well.

/ sorry

I liked him when he was on the tv series Chuck.

It's so weird because I like so many movies he's in (Caddyshack, Vacation, Fletch) but I've never heard a good thing about him!

Because you just listed the only things he's ever been good in for 40 years.

Chevy Chase is the world's greatest troll.  Straight up analog.

You may be right.  Looking at his IMDB, he's been in some garbage.

I'll admit I enjoyed Nothing but Trouble (though I also admit it's a terrible movie) and I like Spies Like Us.
Love Three Amigos, but not because of him.

Funny Farm has it's charms.

And then we're really going back.

I liked Under the Rainbow, Modern Problems, and Foul Play.

Seems like Old Times is one of my all time favorite movies (nostalgia reasons)

So, I actually have liked a lot of his movies.

Besides nearly everybody he's ever worked with?

2014-03-30 06:08:40 PM
I always enjoyed Seems Like Old Times and Caddyshack.  I'm hard pressed to find anything else he has done that I enjoyed.  I find him incredibly irritating most of the time.  He just comes off as douchy.

While Chase pissed Lorne Michaels off when he quit SNL, the two stayed friends until Chase's ill-fated appearance on SNL in 1996.  After that, they not only stopped talking, but Lorne officially banned him from the show.

/What's I've always wondered is if Paul Simon and Chase are still friends, as Simon, Chase and Michaels were really close from the 1970s through the 1990s.

I miss Chevy Chase bank. When I'd travel outside the DC area and pull out my bank card I'd get clerks all the time who would refuse to believe that it was real, and accuse me of trying to play some kind of joke or run some kind of scam. I'd laugh, tell them to just run it and see what happened - then laugh again as they saw it go through, much to their disbelief. I'd then explain that Chevy Chase was also a place just outside of Washington DC. I'd tell them that's where Chevy Chase the comedian got his stage name. It's not true, but at least they wouldn't call the cops on me as I walked out of the store that way.

I really don't f*cking care. Chevy Chase has made me laugh. Many MANY times. SNL and the good movies he has been in. All this behind the scenes crap is meaningless to me.

They say Buddy Rich was an asshole too. (so was Lou Reed and Ginger Baker)

I don't care.

I just like the art these people did.

that is all

That's weird, since he showed up in an episode last year.

I don't care, I still watch any of the Vacation and Fletch movies whenever they're on. And Three Amigos but the other two had better material.

Same here, along with Spies Like Us and Caddyshack, and just because it is so bad, Caddyshack II.

Most of the original SNL cast hated Chevy Chase.

Well, mostly what he did was read "Live from New York" and crib from Gawker's articles on Chase's troubles on Community.

His only charachter is Chevy Chase.  Him and Tom Cruise should do a buddy cop flick.  They could use cardboard cutouts and the audience will imagine exactly what's being said and what's going on in the movie with no help whatsoever.

Chevy Chase being a dick was blatant on the behind the scenes of "Memoirs of an Invisible Man" where Darryl Hannah was pissed and clearly did not want to be there and Chases says, "She really loves me."

Chase was also on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson immediately after leaving SNL when the PR was drumming up the supposed buzz that Chase would take over the Tonight Show and he said, "I'm ready to take over" to Johnny.  That flew like a lead balloon.  Thus Johnny's quote on Chase.

"Memoirs of an Invisible Man" is an amazing book. Don't let the movie put you off. I was convinced for years that the author was a pseudonym, because no one can write that well and only write one book. But apparently H.F. Saint got so rich from the movie deal he never had to write again. A real shame, because it's some great writing.

I like his version of Fletch, but it's not Fletch. It's Chevy Chase's Fletch-like character.

It has unfortunately made it impossible for a proper Fletch series to make onto film or television, too.

I think it could be done, and I think Kevin Smith was a likely director, ten years ago or so.

It's pretty simple: you have to accept that Fletch is neither hero nor anti-hero but rather a character who cuts himself loose from society and suddenly find himself falling upwards.

It must be a Yin and Yang thing, because as much as everyone loathes Chevy Chase, everyone loves Bill Murray and Bill Murray seems nice to everyone. I really can't remember reading anything that calls Murray an asshole.

+1. One of the best books I've ever read.

Another example where showbiz is like sausage: enjoy the final product but you don't want to see how it gets made.

He made fun of Robert Downey Jr.'s father ("Didn't your father used to be a successful director? Whatever happened to him? Boy, he sure died, you know, he sure went to hell.") and was relentlessly hateful to Terry Sweeney, suggesting that SNL's first openly gay cast member star in a sketch where they weighed him every week to see if he had AIDS.

Am I a bad person because I found both of these examples to be hilarious?

I just watched Caddyshack. He actually wasn't funny at all in Caddyshack. Was that character supposed to be funny? I can't tell.

He seems cool now, but he had some moments himself when he went through his divorce that really alienated him from some very nice people.

You can both find something funny AND know that it's totally awful at the same time. Like, "Damn, that's so farking wrong that it's funny because you wouldn't expect someone to be THAT level of callous dickhead. It's over 9000."
