These Republicans are what you tacitly support whenever you vote for a Republican in your own districts for anything, even dog catcher. You're voting for an asshole that looks at the party that is full of these shiatbags and decides "I wanna be associated with that."

No matter how sane your guy seems, he is down for that. Electing him puts more Republicans in public office and puts them in a position to gather more money. Just like electing your seemingly sane (he isn't) representative to the House is actually voting to keep the likes of Boehner and Cantor in power.

With the added side benefit of showing those young people what incredible assholes the republicans have in their ranks.

No, the problem is a two-party system in which one must choose the lesser of two evils.  Granted, it's a pretty easy choice, but still, it'd be nice if those candidates who had a chance of being elected were not themselves solidly welded to one platform or the other.  In the USA, that doesn't seem to happen much outside of primaries --- and even then, it's largely a question of which candidate has the best chance of beating the other party's candidate in the real election.

If you want to blame something, blame the system rather than the individual voter..

for those who take the bible literally, the world is a very scary and confusing place.  for example - we can prove that fossils have been in the ground for millions of years, right?  but the bible says the world has only been around for only 10,000 years.  how do you reconcile these contradictions?  well, for most bible believing people - they don't.  they ignore realities that don't fit their beliefs.  technically, this is called 'delusion' and it's a sign of mental illness but given that many of these people are elected officials in positions of power, we have to find ways to not offend their delicate sensibilities and make their insanities work FOR us rather than against us.

personally, I just like to point out that pagan religious texts predate christian mythology by upwards of 7000 years, then watch the wheels spin out of control....but that might not work for everyone.

FWIW the bible doesn't make any claim to the age of the universe.  Some old dude worked that shiat out with a pencil by going through all the "begats" (I guess insomnia's a biatch.)

Well for one, if evolution is taught as fact, that is incorrect.  It is a theory and should be taught as such.  Although, non science folk think that the word theory means a "guess".  To the contrary, theories are hypothesis that have been tested many times.  As in the "theory of gravity".  The general theory of Evolution has been tested for over 150 years and has passed every time.  So there is no "fact" or "belief" in evolution, it is a continually tested theory that has not been dis-proven.

The problem I have is, Mr. Senator believes that evolution, a tested standard, should be taught as a theory, yet religion, an untested belief should be fact.  If a scientist was to put out data based on his believe I would call it bad science.......Religion, in essence, is bad science.

Perhaps we should teach religion in schools.  It should be under untestable hypothesis, not even getting to the level of a scientific theory.

OgreMagi: Blocking any bill "for religious reasons" should be sufficient ground for immediate expulsion from an elected position.

Unless it's a bill which actually threatens religious freedom.
And no, I don't include Orwellian bills which claim to protect religious freedom but are actually designed to stifle peoples' freedoms according to some particular religious viewpoint.

I'm about as fire-breathing an atheist as you can find, but I think it's entirely appropriate to safeguard religious freedoms in a pluralistic society like ours is supposed to be. This is not an example of that though, and these pathetic excuses for lawmakers should be run out of office. Sadly, I imagine this will probably only make them heroes among their base.

Sen. Kevin Bryant tried to attach the bit about the creator and was ruled out of order. Then Mike Bryant objected to the measure because he said he thinks designating state snacks, state rocks, state fossils, etc is silly.

pyrotek85: I'm not even sure what their objection is. Isn't it still a fossil regardless of whether someone believes in God or not? Are they refuting the existence of the fossil in question? Simply making it the state fossil isn't pro-evolution, it's just acknowledging the existence of a fossil that was found in the state.

for those who take the bible literally, the world is a very scary and confusing place.  for example - we can prove that fossils have been in the ground for millions of years, right?  but the bible says the world has only been around for only 10,000 years.  how do you reconcile these contradictions?  well, for most bible believing people - they don't.  they ignore realities that don't fit their beliefs.  technically, this is called 'delusion' and it's a sign of mental illness but given that many of these people are elected officials in positions of power, we have to find ways to not offend their delicate sensibilities and make their insanities work FOR us rather than against us.

personally, I just like to point out that pagan religious texts predate christian mythology by upwards of 7000 years, then watch the wheels spin out of control....but that might not work for everyone.
