gilgigamesh: ginandbacon: And I had no idea the first fossil found in this country was a wooly mammoth tooth in SC in 1725

Nonsense.

Anyone with any Biblical knowledge knows that predates the creation of the Universe by at least a century.

No one alive today knows anyone who was around during the American Revolution.  Therefore, the American Revolution never happened.

You might notice that there's no first reference in this article to "Bryant." That's because it's conflating two different people and two different issues.

Sen. Kevin Bryant tried to attach the bit about the creator and was ruled out of order. Then Mike Bryant objected to the measure because he said he thinks designating state snacks, state rocks, state fossils, etc is silly.

TinyFist: Fossils are the tools of the Devil.

I seem to recall certain fossils being found in the Middle Ages and the thought was that they were snakes- not a shell. Anyways they went so far as to carve snake heads on some of them to prove it. Been a while since I read about it.

When someone believes something, they will defend it with everything. But I wonder if their belief isn't something less religion and more class. South Carolina isn't known for 'getting along' historically.

I can respect that position, but that's not the reason for their objection. Or it is and they're just hiding behind religion, which isn't any better IMO.

2014-03-30 03:11:07 PM

rbuzby: Why do Christians want  the government to acknowledge their religion?  Are they worried God will be mad if the state has an official fossil?  So they placate God by making sure he is mentioned in the fossil bill?

"I was sooo going to smite you people but then you mentioned me in your bill, so for now, you will remain un-smoten"  said God.  Apparently.

Because government aknowledgement of non-Jesus events make convince everyone to stop believing in JEsus.

2014-03-30 03:11:48 PM

pyrotek85: I'm not even sure what their objection is. Isn't it still a fossil regardless of whether someone believes in God or not? Are they refuting the existence of the fossil in question? Simply making it the state fossil isn't pro-evolution, it's just acknowledging the existence of a fossil that was found in the state.

for those who take the bible literally, the world is a very scary and confusing place.  for example - we can prove that fossils have been in the ground for millions of years, right?  but the bible says the world has only been around for only 10,000 years.  how do you reconcile these contradictions?  well, for most bible believing people - they don't.  they ignore realities that don't fit their beliefs.  technically, this is called 'delusion' and it's a sign of mental illness but given that many of these people are elected officials in positions of power, we have to find ways to not offend their delicate sensibilities and make their insanities work FOR us rather than against us.

personally, I just like to point out that pagan religious texts predate christian mythology by upwards of 7000 years, then watch the wheels spin out of control....but that might not work for everyone.

OK, young earth. Most of the protestant young-earth slingers have no idea where this theory actually comes from. This is the sad part. No where in the said old testament (or new for that matter) does it state how old the earth is. The crux of this 6 thousand year old nonsense comes from here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ussher_chronology

Archbishop Ussher essentially calculated genealogies. In a word, it's horseshiat, not theology.

Now please go apologize to this kid you morons.

dr_blasto: These Republicans are what you tacitly support whenever you vote for a Republican in your own districts for anything, even dog catcher. You're voting for an asshole that looks at the party that is full of these shiatbags and decides "I wanna be associated with that."

No matter how sane your guy seems, he is down for that. Electing him puts more Republicans in public office and puts them in a position to gather more money. Just like electing your seemingly sane (he isn't) representative to the House is actually voting to keep the likes of Boehner and Cantor in power.

FTA: "I think it's a good idea to designate the mammoth as the state fossil, I don't have a problem with that. I just felt like it'd be a good thing to acknowledge the creator of the fossils," Bryant told the Daily Beast.

SOUTH CAROLINA
State Bird: Carolina Wren, created on the Fifth Day with the beasts of the sky.
State Animal: Whitetail Deer, created on the Sixth Day with the beasts of the field.
State Butterfly: Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, created on the Fifth Day with the beasts of the sky.
State Dog: Boykin Spaniel, created on the Sixth Day with the beasts of the field. Jesus.
State Amphibian: Spotted Salamander, created... wait is this one Fifth Day or Sixth Day? They're amphibians, right? Jesus.
State Duck: Wood Duck, created on the Fifth Day we're pretty sure also here. Jesus.
State Fish: Striped Bass, created on the Fifth Day, really, Bryant, do we really have to do this every time? Jesus.
etc. etc.

2014-03-30 03:19:58 PM
So he wants a blurb from the bible in there as well because he thinks that if they acknowledge the fossil, they should acknowledge god, the mammoth's creator?

Is he okay with SC having a state bird? How does the state bird and the mammoth have a different creator?

Also, and most importantly, those guys are cocks.

Bryant proposed an amendment to the bill to include a passage from Genesis explaining the Biblical creation of life-because why not?

What we have here is just another example of liberals taking a few fringe, powerless backwoods extremist whackos with no influence, and blowing them up as if they were representative of the views of mainstream Christians who create policy.
