"Why not? It can't hurt anything," Ridgeway said. "But the benefit to this is to the children and young people of South Carolina, letting them realize that they do have a say-so in what happens in South Carolina and, No. 2, it gives them experience and information about the governmental process and legislative process in South Carolina."

With the added side benefit of showing those young people what incredible assholes the republicans have in their ranks.

Fair, who has compared the President to Osama Bin Laden, helped to block funding for a rape crisis center, called climate change a hoax, and blocked evolution from the state's science standards, saying "I don't have a problem with teaching theories. I don't think it should be taught as fact," stood up for Biblical representation in the state fossil-after all, what's science without Jesus?

Bryant proposed an amendment to the bill to include a passage from Genesis explaining the Biblical creation of life-because why not?

What we have here is just another example of liberals taking a few fringe, powerless backwoods extremist whackos with no influence, and blowing them up as if they were representative of the views of mainstream Christians who create policy.

These Republicans are what you tacitly support whenever you vote for a Republican in your own districts for anything, even dog catcher. You're voting for an asshole that looks at the party that is full of these shiatbags and decides "I wanna be associated with that."

No matter how sane your guy seems, he is down for that. Electing him puts more Republicans in public office and puts them in a position to gather more money. Just like electing your seemingly sane (he isn't) representative to the House is actually voting to keep the likes of Boehner and Cantor in power.

I'm not even sure what their objection is. Isn't it still a fossil regardless of whether someone believes in God or not? Are they refuting the existence of the fossil in question? Simply making it the state fossil isn't pro-evolution, it's just acknowledging the existence of a fossil that was found in the state.

I seem to recall certain fossils being found in the Middle Ages and the thought was that they were snakes- not a shell. Anyways they went so far as to carve snake heads on some of them to prove it. Been a while since I read about it.

When someone believes something, they will defend it with everything. But I wonder if their belief isn't something less religion and more class. South Carolina isn't known for 'getting along' historically.

for those who take the bible literally, the world is a very scary and confusing place.  for example - we can prove that fossils have been in the ground for millions of years, right?  but the bible says the world has only been around for only 10,000 years.  how do you reconcile these contradictions?  well, for most bible believing people - they don't.  they ignore realities that don't fit their beliefs.  technically, this is called 'delusion' and it's a sign of mental illness but given that many of these people are elected officials in positions of power, we have to find ways to not offend their delicate sensibilities and make their insanities work FOR us rather than against us.

personally, I just like to point out that pagan religious texts predate christian mythology by upwards of 7000 years, then watch the wheels spin out of control....but that might not work for everyone.

OK, young earth. Most of the protestant young-earth slingers have no idea where this theory actually comes from. This is the sad part. No where in the said old testament (or new for that matter) does it state how old the earth is. The crux of this 6 thousand year old nonsense comes from here:

Archbishop Ussher essentially calculated genealogies. In a word, it's horseshiat, not theology.

SOUTH CAROLINA
State Bird: Carolina Wren, created on the Fifth Day with the beasts of the sky.
State Animal: Whitetail Deer, created on the Sixth Day with the beasts of the field.
State Butterfly: Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, created on the Fifth Day with the beasts of the sky.
State Dog: Boykin Spaniel, created on the Sixth Day with the beasts of the field. Jesus.
State Amphibian: Spotted Salamander, created... wait is this one Fifth Day or Sixth Day? They're amphibians, right? Jesus.
State Duck: Wood Duck, created on the Fifth Day we're pretty sure also here. Jesus.
State Fish: Striped Bass, created on the Fifth Day, really, Bryant, do we really have to do this every time? Jesus.
etc. etc.

for those who take the bible literally, the world is a very scary and confusing place.  for example - we can prove that fossils have been in the ground for millions of years, right?  but the bible says the world has only been around for only 10,000 years.  how do you reconcile these contradictions?  well, for most bible believing people - they don't.  they ignore realities that don't fit their beliefs.  technically, this is called 'delusion' and it's a sign of mental illness but given that many of these people are elected officials in positions of power, we have to find ways to not offend their delicate sensibilities and make their insanities work FOR us rather than against us.

personally, I just like to point out that pagan religious texts predate christian mythology by upwards of 7000 years, then watch the wheels spin out of control....but that might not work for everyone.

I've done something similar, such as pointing out how the epic Gilgamesh predate the flood by a few thousand years.  They generally get really pissed and call me a liar.

ginandbacon: I had no idea the first fossil found in this country was a wooly mammoth tooth in SC in 1725.

That is the first sort of correctly identified fossil. Native Americans knew about huge fossilized bones and had various explanations involving giants. The slaves in SC who dug up the mammoth tooth (~1725) at Stono said they recognized it as an elephant tooth which is close enough. It wasn't until 1798 that Georges Cuvier said that mammoths and elephants were separate species (and he knew about the Stono tooth which was well known hot topic).

You can read most of "Fossil Legends of the First Americans" (which also covers the Stono tooth) online at google.

From another less leftist/regressive slanted report (here):Fair said his objection was not based on religious grounds. Instead, he said it was simple maneuvering - Fair is trying to get another Democratic senator to drop his objection to a bill Fair proposed that would merge the state Department of Commerce and Department of Pardon, Probation, and Parole Services.

How the two departments merging is a good thing I don't know since they obviously have different objectives. And just after that he says he'd introduce something to reference mammoths being made by a "Creator" aka the invisible sky fairy.

So I think it is more along the lines of pandering to the mouth breathing Jesus fascist brigade.

Personally, I don't know why it hasn't been banned. Those who habitually and deliberately troll should be.

Unless it's a bill which actually threatens religious freedom.
And no, I don't include Orwellian bills which claim to protect religious freedom but are actually designed to stifle peoples' freedoms according to some particular religious viewpoint.

I'm about as fire-breathing an atheist as you can find, but I think it's entirely appropriate to safeguard religious freedoms in a pluralistic society like ours is supposed to be. No matter how sane your guy seems, he is down for that. Electing him puts more Republicans in public office and puts them in a position to gather more money. Just like electing your seemingly sane (he isn't) representative to the House is actually voting to keep the likes of Boehner and Cantor in power.

This is also what happens when you stay home and don't vote at all. There's a reason the Republicans are trying to make it harder for people to vote, because low voter turnout benefits them. If you don't like what they are doing, and yet you can't get off your lazy ass and vote, then you are voting Republican. no Fossil, which is real, yet "Jesus", an obvious illiterate, left nothing behind, ascended into "Heaven". Riiight.

"He is best known for the stacks of bills he has introduced that deal with sex. A recent bill called for jail time and fines for men caught in public with "discernibly turgid penises." Fair has sponsored many bills that advocate treating homosexuality as a crime.

Fair proposed rewriting the 1988 Comprehensive Health Education Act to delete all mention of "responsible sexual behavior." To Fair there is no such thing outside of marriage.

That Guy Jeff: dr_blasto: These Republicans are what you tacitly support whenever you vote for a Republican in your own districts for anything, even dog catcher.

And every time you vote Democrat you support anti-vaxers, anti-video game crusaders, and  the national security police state.

Or votes should be based on merit, not party lines. You are the problem.

No, the problem is a two-party system in which one must choose the lesser of two evils.  Granted, it's a pretty easy choice, but still, it'd be nice if those candidates who had a chance of being elected were not themselves solidly welded to one platform or the other.  In the USA, that doesn't seem to happen much outside of primaries --- and even then, it's largely a question of which candidate has the best chance of beating the other party's candidate in the real election.

If you want to blame something, blame the system rather than the individual voter..

Just to expound a bit, I do agree that one should vote for the candidate based on their positions and likely actions, not on their party.  But I also do not think that people who vote straight-party ticket are the real problem.

Seriously, there is such a high level of stupidity in the world that these people needed to be rounded up and sent to HAPPY FUN CAMPS and be GIVEN LOTS OF CANDY before the rest of us end up in the apocalyptic wet dreams these farktards have every night for real.

It's hate.  It has to be.  They hate everyone other than themselves and try to make them as miserable as possible, and they use religion or politics or economics or whatever is handy to do it.  We have to somehow connect what they do to hate crimes and get rid of these people before they end us.

Well for one, if evolution is taught as fact, that is incorrect.  It is a theory and should be taught as such.  Although, non science folk think that the word theory means a "guess".  To the contrary, theories are hypothesis that have been tested many times.  As in the "theory of gravity".  The general theory of Evolution has been tested for over 150 years and has passed every time.  So there is no "fact" or "belief" in evolution, it is a continually tested theory that has not been dis-proven.

The problem I have is, Mr. Senator believes that evolution, a tested standard, should be taught as a theory, yet religion, an untested belief should be fact.  If a scientist was to put out data based on his believe I would call it bad science.......Religion, in essence, is bad science.

Perhaps we should teach religion in schools.  It should be under untestable hypothesis, not even getting to the level of a scientific theory.

BS.  I don't have to ask the tribesman to know that most of them like to look at women too.  Just because something isn't covered doesn't mean it isn't nice to look at.

Letrole often posts the same troll paragraph verbatim year after year in different threads with any sort of related subject matter.

Those are not serious questions, I'm poking fun at the "God is an old man with a penis that lives in the clouds" group.  Which is what most of the Judeo-Christian religion claims with a straight face.

That's not entirely correct.  There is the Theory of Evolution and the fact of evolution, and they are two different, yet related things.  That some species occasionally evolve into other species is a fact: we've observed it happen.  That all life on Earth evolved from a common ancestor via speciation is the theory.  It isn't fact because we have no way of directly seeing what happened billions of years ago --- we can only theorize based on what we observe now and what we can deduce about the past.

I honestly believe that these "Christians" believe that by kissing up to a fundamentalist framework, and by pushing these beliefs on to others, they will secure a better current and afterlife. 'Who needs Obamacare, when praying is all you need to do? And besides, Obamacare will make people less reliant on God, so we must stop it otherwise our homes will combust into flames and we will be forced to live on the streets.'

'Likewise, we have to not only believe that the Earth was created in seven days, literally, but that we must force this notion to as many places as possible. It will please the Almighty, and ensure that I will be able to afford a larger home with a faster car compared to all those other lazy Christians who do not pursue the fundamentals like I do.'

Weaver95: pyrotek85: I'm not even sure what their objection is. Isn't it still a fossil regardless of whether someone believes in God or not? Are they refuting the existence of the fossil in question? Simply making it the state fossil isn't pro-evolution, it's just acknowledging the existence of a fossil that was found in the state.

for those who take the bible literally, the world is a very scary and confusing place.  for example - we can prove that fossils have been in the ground for millions of years, right?  but the bible says the world has only been around for only 10,000 years.  how do you reconcile these contradictions?  well, for most bible believing people - they don't.  they ignore realities that don't fit their beliefs.  technically, this is called 'delusion' and it's a sign of mental illness but given that many of these people are elected officials in positions of power, we have to find ways to not offend their delicate sensibilities and make their insanities work FOR us rather than against us.

personally, I just like to point out that pagan religious texts predate christian mythology by upwards of 7000 years, then watch the wheels spin out of control....but that might not work for everyone.

FWIW the bible doesn't make any claim to the age of the universe.  Some old dude worked that shiat out with a pencil by going through all the "begats" (I guess insomnia's a biatch.)

Scientists and laypeople have different definitions of theory. To a layperson, a theory is any unproven idea that may or may not be true, including any musing by any individual.

But to a scientist (who uses it's true definition), a theory is a rigorously tested idea that has stood up to challenges and has been accepted by a consensus of scientists.

A theory is as close to a fact as it gets. There is no point where a theory is anointed with the term "law" to make it more legitimate in science. The inverse square "law" of gravitational acceleration is part of the theory of gravity. The existence of photons is a theory. The "laws" of thermodynamics are theory.

Anyone who tosses around the old trope of "theory vs. fact" does not understand what a theory is, or how science works.

actually, that's incorrect. evolution is fact. observable fact. you can watch bacteria evolve in a petri dish. the "theory" is to how this evolution takes place. and the most accepted and tested (by far) theory is that it occurs by natural selection.

Sad to say, this only operates on the local (city/county elected officials) level.  Boone County, MO. is a blue dot in a sea of red (University of MO - yeah, `study it out').  Was in the 9th Cong. District with the ersatz `RINO' Luetkemeyer, `10 census drew the line across many of our throats and am now in the 4th with the true believer, Vicky Hartzler (would stand shoulder to shoulder with that SC scum and try to outdo him).

So, Dems could televise Harry Reid dry humping that squeaky toy Pelosi on the floor under the Capitol dome as she screams out for free medical care for the `undocumented' while Obama prances around them sporting a Che beret, and it would still be a more `attractive' tableaux than the `passion play' being staged by the remnants of the Repub. Party (the likes of Charles Percy & Everett Dirksen are spinning in their graves - fossils, yes?).

Would be nice if there was a stone cold `Pramatists for the Republic'  not in my lifetime.  But the R's as currently constituted can only pray for rapture at this point, might as well transubstantiate their corporeal forms - as this voter can no longer `see' anything worth looking at.

Which is why I tell people all the time that we should be far more afraid of where D's and R's agree than where they disagree.  They've worked TOGETHER for decades to ensure this gerrymandered mess stays that way and as a result incumbency rates are near all-time highs.  The entire system needs reinvented with proportional representation.  We also need to draw every district into as square a box as is geographically possible.  We need term limits in congress, we need to shut down the legislator->lobbyist->bureaucrat revolving door.

The biggest lie in American politics is that R and D are mutually exclusive and opposite.  They are not.

That was quite the ummm... breezy article. Crooks and Liars grabbed a "syndicated" article that was partisan (whodathunk?). That's OK. I mean, partisan or not, the whole thing is douchey. However, it doesn't really even caption that picture. I had to google the names to figure out who was who. I couldn't even figure out who Mr. Punchable was on the left for a bit. The guy on the right is Mike Fair (Jesus fossil). Mr. Pleased as Punch(able) is Kevin Bryant. Nowhere in that article does it even list his full name. Only mentions "Bryant" twice. I thought at first they were referring to Glenn McConnell, but a GIS proved that to be no. In the end, yes, these guys do suck. But so does that article.

ferretman: 1% ers are doing very well and their 'success' is great cause our guy is in office.

/FTFY

So, you think the administration is neglecting the needs of the poor?

Isn't that the exact diametrical opposite of what right-wingers usually complain about?

Sometimes I think you guys don't even know what you want, just as long as whatever Obama does is wrong.
