ZAZ: In much of America the law prohibits posting unofficial signs that could be confused with official signs. Another law prohibits using unapproved graphics on official signs. FHWA got on the case of one state DOT that had the red dots wrong on the new school bus stop sign.

What about posting official signs unofficially?

CSB

My best friend's childhood home was on the corner of two rural but heavily travelled state roads and had a restaurant across the street that was frequented by big trucks. The parking was limited there, so frequently there would be a huge truck parked in front of their house idling at all hours. There was not really room to park there, they were basically parking on the soft shoulder but since there were no signs saying they couldn't, there was always a truck parked there.

So one day my friend's brother found a No Parking sign and pole that had been knocked over somewhere and they planted it in the ground in front of their house. Boom, no more trucks parking there.

The kicker came a couple years later when the state came along and saw the poor condition the sign and pole were in. They replaced the sign and pole and made it official.

Moral of the story: make your own rules, and when no one objects, they can become the law.

Jim_Callahan: Fake signs are mostly problematic because if they become even somewhat frequent it can easily train people to ignore real signs.

SecretAgentWoman: Anyone who visits Fark regularly should be fully aware of the complete stupidity and gullibility of the general human population.

If people are mistaking fake signs for real signs, I think that that is a "sign" (tee hee) that there is a sign saturation problem, and the only solution is to either de-sign or re-design official signage or else resign their official signal jobs.

SecretAgentWoman: I do think it's funny but way too realistic and could cause safety problems. Perhaps they could have re-designed the sign so it wouldn't look so official?

Really? Are you afraid someone will throw their back out attempting to cross the street whilst performing a silly walk?

Norway isn't exactly known for their sense of humor. They banned Monty Python's Life of Brian and this was used in ads stating "So funny it was banned in Norway!"

I have this to say about Monty Python road signs:

THEY'RE FARKING BRILLANT!

Here's some suggestions:

Watch out for MOOSE BITES: Next 15 miles

DANGER:  Falling Cartoon Characters

BEWARE OF KILLER RABBIT

This vehicle protected by Anti-Crash Device:

Driver's lunch will eject in the event of upcoming accidents.

Drive Defensively: Cubist Painters on Bicycles.

BEWARE THE JABBERWOCK, MY SON

Warning: Slow moving vehicles

Keep an eye out for psychiatric milk floats and episodic déja-vu.

This horse-drawn cart stops frequently

May contain nuclear heads.

Pass with care.

What is it with Norway and Monty Python? The Norwegian censors banned  Life of Brian, which led to adverts in Sweden describing the film as "so funny it was banned in Norway."
