Either this story is bullshiat (I think there is more to it) or this is an absolutely ridiculous abuse under title nine.

The combined stench of the Blaze and Weasel Zippers is eye-watering.

If the school officials were so goddamned stupid they didn't think about Title IX then they're the ones who should be apologizing to the parents who raised the money.

Is it me or are Fark headlines more lame than usual, lately?

I used to read down the various tabs and get a really clever headline on a regular basis, but now they're mostly crap. Like this one.

Subby, how hard did you have to work to get a mob reference meme mixed into a high school bleacher controversy?

A lot of schools have tried to cover up mismanagement of their athletic programs with claims of Title IX issues.  "No, we're not killing the water polo program because we gave that football coach who turned out to suck worse than our last one millions of dollars.  It's totally Title IX.  Trust us."

Why do they need separate bleachers for the girls field?  Why do they need a separate field for the girls?

If the boys and the girls can't play games together, why not just use the different field at different times?

It is probably a little bit of both. TIX doesn't require that the girls soccer team have the same set of bleachers as the boys.

All it says is that you cannot limit access to education based on gender-you have to spend the same amount of money on girls sports as on boys.

So, if the boys get a bleacher worth x dollars, the girls get equal value. If they don't need new bleachers, you put that money somewhere else in the budget.

Schools have been managing this for decades, and using booster club donations, so something is clearly wrong in this case.

Look at the source- a group of people who hate both women ans federal regulations.

Why raise money for that nonsense anyway?  It would be nice to read of a parents group raising money for a science department.

Actually, it would be nice to read that they don't have to.

"A group of parents raised money for a raised seating deck by the field, as it was hard to see the games through a chain-link fence. The parents even did the installation themselves, and also paid for a new scoreboard.

But, after a complaint, the U.S Education Department's Office for Civil Rights investigated the new addition and says it must be torn down. It says the facility was no longer equal to the girls' softball field next door, which has old bleachers and an old scoreboard.

The school agreed to take the seats down after receiving a citation. The seating was also not handicapped accessible." From a slightly less mouth-breathy site.

So the genius principal allowed a group of parents to come in and build something that was non-compliant with at least 2 federal laws (I don't even want to speculate on potential safety problems) because they wanted it for themselves and their their kids and to hell with anybody else's kids or friends or family.

Guess what? That's not how public schools operate. Want to donate to build a new media lab? Sure. Give the money to the school district and they will contract for one that is compliant with all applicable laws and regulations that benefits all the students. Not just the ones you know and like. Want to give better desktops to your kids and their friends in their 3rd period computer class? Nope.

That principal or whomever actually okayed this should be fired.

Thanks. That was better, but they only interviewed an Angry Local Man and the school superintendent. Why not have the OCR or a lawyer on camera explaining the law? Why not ask Area Man why they didn't build seats for the girls as well?

Because that wouldn't give enough outrage.

Also, TIX doesn't require that schools build the same type of stadium. If it did, the Auburn University Women's Lacrosse stadium would fit 100,000 people.

The whole premise of this article is absurd.

The school agreed to tear down the new bleachers after government officials issued a citation.

Plymouth High School superintendent Michael Meissen said the school will hold onto the new bleachers until they can come up with a plan that adheres to strict government rules and is "fair to everyone," WJBK-TV reported.

So in this case "tearing down" means putting into storage until they improve the girl's field.

Because boys play baseball and girls play softball.  The field dimensions are different.  Most notably the base-paths.  90 feet between bases in baseball.  60 feet for softball.

Thing that all the whining blog posts are leaving out:  The seats were built SIX YEARS AGO.  All the blogs are making it seem like the government waited until they just finished building them, and then immediately stepped in and ordered them to tear them down.  No, they gave them six years to perform similar upgrades to the other seating, and they did not.  The bleachers were also not built to handicap-accessible regulations.

They're also not scrapping the bleachers.  They're just moving them into storage.

It sucks, but people get outraged when it comes to sports.  If the parents had gotten together to chip in money to send only the boys on a school trip, or only upgrade the boys' bathrooms, hardly anyone would be defending them.

Meh, broken clock and all that.

Still, it did look as if the boys and girls fields were indeed differently maintained, meaning that yes, they did need to come down.  That scoreboard should, too.

/that, or just use the same farking field for both.  that'd work.  AND they could add more classrooms to the then-empty space.

This sounds like the most likely answer.

My guess is the conversation went something like: "You need to make this ADA compliant, oh, and by the way we've noticed the girls sports teams are separate but not equal - you should find a way to address that"

They weren't even torn down, the school just disassembled them and is trying to work out how to reinstall them properly.

Question: Is it just me or is it weird that they have separate fields for boys and girls sports?

2014-03-30 09:24:09 AM
Why does anybody care about some podunk town's high school baseball team, outside of the kids on the team, and maybe their parents? And yeah, the bleachers also manage to violate ADA rules, but Republicans find it easier to be angry at teenage girls than people in wheelchairs. For now.

Softball fields are a different size than baseball fields. And I presume this place has a girl's softball and boy's baseball team only. If there were multiple Baseball teams, or Softball, I presume they'd use the same fields.

I'm not entirely sure why baseball's not co-ed. I remember high school athletes, and the baseball players weren't particularly stronger, by and large, than the girls who were playing sports. It's a sport that's nowhere near as physically intensive as football or basketball, or pretty much anything other than golf.

Another question comes to mind. How did they get a building permit issued from the county/city if the structure was not ADA compliant? And please, please, please don't say that there was no permit issued as that is enough to force the structure to be removed in almost any jurisdiction. Especially one that is intended for public use. And this comes well before any civil rights question. This is public safety.
