Went to youth group?  It says hapless suspect was charged with "soliciting a minor with an electronic device".  Likely means he asked for pictures of her undressed or sent same of himself.

I went to the youth group to meet guys. Of course since it was a Catholic church, well...

Wait. I just spent an hour watching this week's SVU episode and figured out that rape isn't funny at all. The act and crime aren't funny, but I'll be goddamned (heh) if I can't laugh at the stupidity of the perpetrator.

Silly pastor, you can solicit minors in priest county. Pope county is for pretending it never happened.

Most of the sex I had between the ages of 13 and 17 was with girls I met through youth group trips. I stopped believing in god around age 14-15, but I kept going to youth group for two reasons: One, all of my friends were from my church and we always did fun stuff  with the YG, and two, I got laid so much. Not many girls in my own high school were interested in me, but holy shiat were the girls from other churches interested.

Why did I get a reservation for an aisle seat the next week?

I was never a very religious person but by the time I was a teenager it was mainly a social thing...that and a lot of the weekend events were 60 percent women to men and 15 to 1 ratio of teenagers versus chaperones.  I'll just leave it at that.

I went to a church youth group a few times because there was a girl that I was interested that was in it and she wanted me to go to it. Now, in my case her and I were the same age, but I couldn't stand humoring them all for very long just to improve my chances with her. So when I hit that point I just said, "I'm sorry, but this just isn't for me. Thanks. You all are very nice people, but I'm going to go."

Her and I dated for a bit still after that, but eventually we went our separate ways. We still keep in touch (figuratively, not literally) even though it's been about 20 years.

My youth pastor was twenty years older than us. He wasn't creepy or sad. Great guy, great with kids our age. Was married and his wife was actively involved as well. It's not a job for me, and I can see why it'd attract creeps, but don't assume that's the norm.

I've inadvertently spent extended periods of time with 15 or 20 of them, and they were  all creepy, sad, or both.  Both the ones I interacted with when I was actually an oblivious kid going to day camp, and the ones I interacted with as an adult later in life living in (and at one point managing) the building where they met.

Honestly, most of the ones under 21 were pretty creepy too, just for slightly different reasons (them crazy eyes).

My anecdotal experience isn't data either, but it's significantly closer so everyone can go back to assuming it's the norm, I think.

It s a perennial hazard for church groups - they are way more trusting/gullible than wider society

These guys pop up all the time.

They can't form proper relationships in real world bc they don't function with girls their own age

They form transient friendships with prepubescent teenage boys who out grow them

The friendships don't necessarily evolve into anything wrong, but the potential is always there

But the religious group just sees the surface guy-being-a-friend thing

But these guys have to move on all the time

My parents made me go to youth group around the time I hit my teens.  Any and everything church related already bored the hell out of me so I wasn't looking forward to this either.  Not to mention all the other kids there my age or older were all friends and an extremely cliqueish crowd that hated me because I wasn't a member of their crowd.  There was a lot of very subtle bullying from a lot of them for a while but they just ignored me after a while and what was really ironic is that I was more conventionally moral (didn't drink, smoke, or screw as none of those things were options for me) than those people even though I was indifferent to religion.

After some of the older kids stopped going in lieu of carousing around town and the crowd got younger we got a new youth pastor who was in his early 20s.  He was South African but had lived mainly in England.  He never said or did anything inappropriate or uncomfortable to any of the kids and had a girlfriend, he just always came off a bit fruity.  He left when I was in 11th grade or so (I had a job by then and had quit going).  A year or two back I looked him up on facebook and found that he's now the pastor of a church in Texas that caters to the LGBT community and is married to another dude.

//just kinda ironic about the whole pastor who is deep in the closet thing

Church-y girls were the best. Jesus talk is like a magic aphrodisiac, and the adult supervision at retreats/lock-ins was always sketchy. Some of the most kinky things I've ever done (to this day) were at religious functions. On teachers desks, two girls in the same night, outdoors, etc.  You had to apply a bit of leniency to the "don't stick it in crazy" rule at times, but they were often the best type of crazy. Sex crazed to a barely containable point, rebelling against rules with a vengeance, and rarely did they even want to know your name.

Actually continued going to a few of these a year as a volunteer counselor throughout high-school, just to "keep in touch" with some of the other volunteer counselors.

/ Always stayed age appropriate, never even thought about getting all creepy-counselor
// Plenty of action to be had with the co-counselors as you got older.
/// One in particular had a rope fetish that was beyond impressive at the time.

I grew up in rural Indiana and there were few outlets for kids except church youth groups. We were the naughty kids who smoked dope, TPed homes, smashed a mail box or two, trespassed at abandoned farmhouses to either use them as hot boxes or drinking stations. Some of the biggest stoners I ever met were in church youth groups.

I found that youth pastors were the most sexually active, had their pick of the crop as far as fawning young girls were concerned. One of them was a ridiculous Van Dreesen type complete with the guitar and the annoying nasally voice. He was later booted for guess what. Carrying on with under age girls.

FTFA: suspicion of soliciting a minor with an electronic device

Others mentioned this, but my question is why the electronic device has anything to do with the charge. Either you have solicited a minor or you haven't. With what doesn't enter into it.
Or is this another attempt to get tough on crimeTM? Do they hand out more time if you use an electronic device?

Spent a lot of time during high school with my church's youth group. Back then most of the adults seemed a bit creepy but teens think most adults are creepy. Looking back on it, almost all of them were creepy. The only exception were the parents who had half a dozen kids at home. They were used to dealing with lots of kids, knew what kind of BS they were up to, and nothing was new to them. They knew what to ignore and what to keep an eye on. Luckily for those who wanted to get into mischief, they usually only had time to help out with one or two events per year. The rest of the adults were an odd mix of childless couples, lonely guys, and overly protective helicopter parents. If no one got molested by at least one of them, I'd be shocked.

Teenage get pissed a girl dumps him so he cuts the phone line to her house: six months probation, spend one Saturday morning picking up garbage around city hall
Same teenager gets into phone company computers to disconnect ex-gf's phone line: charged under terrorism laws, might get out of prison in time to join AARP

Are you me? Because I did the exact same thing. They were nice people, but it gets old fast when every other sentence out of their mouths is how awesome it is to be a Christian...it was like they were trying to convince themselves, it was downright cult-like and creepy.
