I think for current shows, Murdoch Mysteries is the only one I watch. For past shows...does Stargate SG-1 count?

I watched Slings & Arrows recently and even though I thought it was pretty weird at first, it really is a freaking excellent show.

I like that show with the vertical colour bars and the monotone humming sound.

rcf1105: Though it's cancelled now, "Todd and the Book of Pure Evil" is one of my favorite tv shows ever.

So much this. It deserves more viewers.

Did I miss it or has no one mentioned Dragon's Den yet?  I watch that every week.

I totally forgot about Canada's Worst Drivers. Holy fark, there was some scary stuff on there. The one that sticks out in my head was a guy driving thru some cones and he hit one. So, he got out of his car to remove the cone from the wheel well, leaving the car in drive.

Jim_Callahan: ilikeracecars: Does Supernatural count?

That.

Albeit the fact that all the sets are in Canada near Vancouver when the show is ostensibly set in various US locations with  widely variant flora, fauna, and climate can sometimes be a little jarring for anyone that's actually driven around in either place.

Still a fun show, though.

// Sometimes catch myself humming the "Ghostfacers" theme to myself randomly for no reason, not sure why that's stuck with me for four damned years or whatever even though they got displaced narratively by the one-expression Dr. Horrible chick and her "Caliban from Narbonic lifted wholesale" storyline.

I remember watching an early episode of Supernatural and seeing a bookshelf inset into the wall and thinking it was a great idea. then I noticed it again. and again. and again.

Has anyone mentioned Todd and The Book of Pure Evil? That show cracks me up. Too bad it only lasted two seasons.  Not to mention the hotness of Melanie Leishman.

Other that that, Red Green is pretty good.

Going back, Night Heat was good. Though they had to make it look like New York to get anyone in the US to watch it.

Corner Gas can appeal to anyone in NA who came from a small town. And it had probably the most clever writing for a Canadian show, IMHO.

I watch Almost Human which I hope they retitle Almost Naked for

armedrobbery.files.wordpress.com

obvious reasons.

Watching them try to disguise Vancouver as some unnamed generic city is mildly amusing as well. Whenever you hear left wing biatching about jobs being exported out if the country it never seems to be about the solid democrats in Hollywood shooting everything they can in Vancouver or Toronto.

The Newsroom. (I mean the Ken Finkleman The Newsroom.)

If you haven't seen it, see it. I think is the best television Canada ever produced.

2014-03-30 12:44:45 AM
Also see The Fifth Estate and The Passionate Eye for some first-rate journalism. (The Passionate Eye isn't necessarily Canadian, though...I've seen old NOVA episodes on it, but they still have some really great documentaries.)

I _loved_ Insecurity.  Having been reminded of it, I just looked it up to see if there might be a third season, but found it was cancelled, in part due to low ratings and in part because the province where they filmed disconinuted tax credits they utilized.  That's too bad.

I miss it.

Dude, Insecurity could have been amazing. I'm glad someone else saw it. The Mexican Freedom fighters accidentally holding the Minister of Fisheries hostage, the Dutch being Canada's primary antagonists and Little Holland full of stoners on bikes... So many good ideas if they could've kept going.

And the French-Canadian spy's wife was freaking awesome.

Shows no longer on the air:

Blood Ties
DaVinci's Inquest
Forever Knight
F/X: the Series
SCTV
The Kids in the Hall
Todd and the Book of Pure Evil
Trailer Park Boys (yes yes, I know it's coming back)
You Can't Do That on Television

Shows that are currently airing:

Continuum
The Listener
Lost Girl
Murdoch Mysteries
Saving Hope

And on a side note, I've figured out what it is about Canadian TV I like so much: the producers generally don't give up on a show unless the core concept is just bad.  The Listener is one of many where they did a fairly significant retooling between the first and second season because certain things just didn't work, yet the premise itself was good.  If a US network had been producing it the thing would have been dropped like a rock, which is not just conjecture since NBC was co-airing it at the time and dropped it after 7 episodes.  CTV however decided they could fix it, and sure enough they did: right now the show is preparing for its fifth season.

If US networks would spend the same kind of effort on shows that Canadians do then we'd have a lot more great TV shows here.  Instead not only are shows dropped for being just marginally iffy in some areas, shows frequently get cancelled for "low ratings" that were caused by things completely unrelated to the show.  The debacle with the Babylon 5 spin-off Legend of the Rangers springs to mind: TNT didn't pick it up due to "low ratings", completely ignoring the fact that it was due to the West Coast airing having been bumped by about an hour and a half from a basketball game running over.

I think it has more to do with the Canadian Content laws.   There has to be Canadian shows for there to be a Canadian network (20%. I believe), so the suits aren't so worried about the shows right out of the gate.   Hell, they probably don't care if you just show Canadian women in wet bathing suits jumping on trampolines, as long as it satisfies content laws (as an aside....producers, I totally have a more expanded concept about the trampoline thing.....product placement and plus.....double plus even!)

Miss Relic, though

Canadian Content laws are why I know who the Tragically Hip are. And Sloan. Ah, half Canadian half US radio...

Also great Insecurity episode inspiration.

If you like gritty cop dramas you might like 19-2.  It's like a Canadian Southland.

Kids In The Hall, Second City, You Can't Do That On Television.... and that's all I can remember. I don't watch much TV anymore.

I would say "How It's Made", but I don't really enjoy it as the writers need to be bashed in the face with a Garden Weasel.

Well that, or Front Page Challenge.

Hart Pomerantz was Lorne Michaels writing partner, and a lawyer, in the David Steinberg days.  These guys did shows
before Second City.

Love the Boys in the Trailer Park too - can't wait for their movies.
Got them to sign my DVD's when they were in Toronto.

This was a VERY FUNNY show - too bad not many people saw it.
That's Canadian TV, though.
You'll have to discover it in reruns.

If you decide to give 19-2 a try, give it more than one episode.  The English pilot was ... ok, but totally forgettable and easily telegraphed.  Definitely gets better from the 2nd episode in.

Have to catch up on season 2 of Continuum.

Aso enjoyed Flashpoint, Canada's Worst Driver, Jetstream, Cold Squad, (like Cold Case but was there first).  Wish Defying Gravity had gotten at least a full season.

I didn't like it, but I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Lexx.  Also, if you like Deadliest Catch then you should try to catch Cold Water Cowboys.  Newfoundlanders working the fishery on the East Coast (be prepared for lots and lots of subtitles)

Benevolent Misanthrope: Secret Agent X23: Well, over here at my house, we were watching Bomb Girls a few weeks ago. There aren't many episodes, so it went rather quickly, but I liked it.

Seconded.  Bomb Girls rocked.

feckingmorons: Little Mosque on the Prarie

This, too.

redoctober65: The Red Green Show

Yep.

libranoelrose: kids in the hall

Of course.

This Hour has 22 Minutes, The Rick Mercer Report, The National, Hockey Night in Canada and Curling on TSN round out my viewing.

A million times yes to Bomb Girls!! Was getting good ratings, but was expensive to make so it was intentionally killed via a midseason schedule change. Real shame.

Lost Girl and Orphan Black, thankfully alive and kicking.

Red Green is hilarious!

Kids in the Hall was hit or miss for me. Never tried drunk watching though. Maybe that'd help.

Was the perfect agr for You Can't Do that on Television and loved it. I still annually rewatch the Anne of Green Gable mini-series starring Megan Follows.

Silvara: Oh, and I guess I didn't know Lost Girl was Canadian, since I watch it on a US channel. So add that one. Need to give Orphan Black another chance I think, I only got a couple episodes in and couldn't get into it.

My dad was the same way. He bailed halfway through episode two. I asked him to give it one more chance and now he's hooked. When I recommend it to people, I tell them to stick it out to episode 4.

The first couple eps are setting things up, eps 3 and 4 are where things take off. If you're not hooked by episode 4, then it's not a show for you.
