It's the time you turn on everything electric in your house to celebrate our conquering of Earth. Look out Mars! You're next!

2014-03-29 08:44:35 PM
Funny, I dont feel aware

2014-03-29 08:45:18 PM
I was going to tell subby that earth hour is when all the tea tards turn on everything they can in the house,  but several are already here to tell us themselves.

2014-03-29 08:46:01 PM
It's when I get my disco nap to power through the night.

2014-03-29 08:46:51 PM
I'm not even in my house. I'm outside burning a pile of PT lumber and asphalt shingles.

2014-03-29 08:51:59 PM
I think this is perfect for Chicago (and many other cities)   they can 'talk' about environmentalism but actually do very little.

They will dump about 100 billion tons of carbon into the atmosphere just from their airport.

Chicago.........not the place where any environmentalism happens.

2014-03-29 08:53:54 PM
Yeah, fark the planet! Conserving resources isn't conservative! 'Merica!

2014-03-29 08:57:14 PM
I'm personally hosting a bonfire  comprised of creosote treated railroad ties

2014-03-29 08:58:54 PM

In honour of Earth Hour I turn off my headlights.

I they marketed this as a "let's just conserve our fuel/power sources to save money and resources thing" a lot more people would be on board. But tying it to a leftist political platform lost them a good portion of people who would otherwise be all for it. I recycle, use energy saving bulbs, low water toilets, and have most of my computer stuff attached to smart UPSs that conserve power much better than I could. But I will also be turning all of my lights and stuff on at that time as well. Not to say "fark the environment" but to say "fark you" to all the people who want me to buy into their political BS as a way for them to take more of my liberty and choice.

I use those energy saving bulbs because I  choose to. But you can bet that if I were ever forced to, I would instead use as many incandescent bulbs as I can manage. Forced virtue is no virtue.

2014-03-29 09:07:48 PM
F**k the Earth!

2014-03-29 09:08:48 PM
Time to put on an iron shirt

2014-03-29 09:09:12 PM
We need a "don't burn tires in your living room" hour.

The point isn't being virtuous. The point is we only have so much fossil fuels to burn. When we run through it, your freedom of choice will go down dramatically.

/yes the Earth Hour thing is silly

2014-03-29 09:12:31 PM
Huh, thought this happened closer to Earth Day....

\missed it by a weeeee bit

2014-03-29 09:13:00 PM
"switch off non-essential lights and other electronic items for an hour"

How exactly is this supposed to do anything? People shouldn't have non essential lights/electronic items on to begin with.

2014-03-29 09:16:03 PM
Went out and checked the electric meter. It's spinning so fast that it is starting to glow

2014-03-29 09:27:14 PM
In before "I'm gonna idle my SUV in the drive and set the thermostat to 95F and spend money in protest of this silly protest."

Oh. Wait.

2014-03-29 09:28:42 PM
I can't find it now, but I thought that there was some reason why Earth Hour actually ended up using more energy.

In any case, my Facebook news feed and Instagram are full of my friends in Asia taking pictures of candles and such that they were burning for it. I'm not sure how using electricity to show the world that you aren't using it really works out to be environmentally friendly though.

People are dumb and leave non-essential things on? I know, shocking

2014-03-29 09:31:24 PM
when is that? 8:30 Central? Is that, like, two hours earlier Pacific? Or is Mountain time reserved for west Virginia. I can't ever figger this out. Is Alaska time the same as Hawaii? Why Not? They became states at the same time...or near enuf.

2014-03-29 09:32:20 PM
I left my electric car charging; unsure if that constitutes supporting or opposing this.

2014-03-29 09:32:38 PM
I turned it all off.

2014-03-29 09:38:53 PM
But it's dark here and cold.

2014-03-29 09:46:27 PM
I have my non-essential lights off as I nap in the glow of my monitor

2014-03-29 09:50:43 PM
This is the only hour out of the entire year when I don't fart.  Got to lower those green house gases man!

2014-03-29 09:53:38 PM
Does that mean it's time to smoke up some good shiat and fire up the ziltch?

2014-03-29 10:07:35 PM
fark that, Stars vs Blues is on.

2014-03-29 10:13:19 PM
They should just reschedule this Earth Hour nonsense for 3am local time, and claim victory.

Pick your battles, idiots.

2014-03-29 10:20:16 PM
This is nothing but a scam run by proponents of dark.

2014-03-29 10:37:10 PM
Meh.

Shiat like this is just to keep the hippies happy.

This planet is doomed. May as well enjoy the cocktails before the plane crashes into the mountain.

That's actually also your political bias speaking. If I have a product that costs less money to operate, individuals who self-identify as conservative tend to approve of it.

As soon as I call it something like "green", "eco-friendly", "Earth-conscious", or similar, those same people strongly disapprove of it.

Using less power to do the same work saves a lot of money. It also saves the Earth.

2014-03-29 11:34:56 PM
Like I need an excuse to drink.

2014-03-29 11:54:20 PM
I was burning tree tops of old growth pine trees that I had cut down.
/ pine fresh smell
// your bonfire is not big enough till the volenteer FD shows up and is concerned.
///planting black walnuts in place of pine.

I observed Earth Hour! I'm helping to save the world! God, I'm wonderful.

Now I'm driving three blocks to the 7/11 for some Slim Jims.

2014-03-30 12:11:00 AM
Darn, forgot about it again. But looking forward to the lower hydro bill I'll get from the decrease in usage as they pass the savings along.

I observed Earth Hour from the 96th floor bar* of the KK100 here in Shenzhen. There had been signs up in a bunch of places, lots of noise about it on the street.

Impact on the fluorescent nightime-illuminations of Shenzhen? Precisely nil.

Though I probably got an even better view of it all than usual becuase they turned down the lights in the bar for that hour. Pretty spectacular...

(*the 100th-floor bar is OK, but the view is worse up there)

I have a friend in New Zealand who told me about Earth Hour a few years ago. She was genuinely surprised that I had never heard of it. Apparently it is a big deal over there but come on, aren't there like five lights in New Zealand?

Nothing good ever comes from Chicago.  Like former Senators and the like.
