And yet, from everything I read, reservations are poverty stricken cesspools, full of abuse and alcoholism.  Where's that money -really- going?

Casinos are pretty handy. In my experience, the restrooms are clean and there's usually a cheap burger bar.

The res where I grew up WAS a complete shiat hole. Meth labs, feral dogs, etc. The tribe built a casino about ten years ago. Now there are nice houses, a higher class of drugs and it's a pretty sweet neighborhood.

LOL, Two out of three is still an improvement.  That's good to hear.  What really counts is are the kids getting a good education and not getting stuck with a bleak outlook for their future?  If they have the tools to succeed, then great.  Maybe the news stories I hear are becoming less and less accurate.  Breaks my heart when I see kids (any kids) with so much potential not given the means to access that potential.  The older I get and the closer to my own end I get, I see what I could have been, but wasn't, even though I had opportunity.  Kids in poverty, though...  It's a rare shot for one get ahead and do something with their life that is meaningful, brings them happiness and makes the world a better place.

Not all of them have a casino and most have finances that are separate from each other. Also it takes more than one generation to break bad habits. No doubt there is some corruption going on too but inertia is going to be the real problem to overcome. If they can keep raking in the dollars though, take another look in forty years and you're likely to see positive outcomes. The real danger is that competing forms of gambling, be it on the internet or more states being open to full service casinos, will crowd the market for gambling dollars.

Or, if you're the Chukchansis in California, you take the opportunity to disenroll half the tribe, just so you don't have to share the money with them.
