Maybe they should make them cheaper, like 3/5 as much as white Barbie.

she was unable to find any Barbie dolls that looked like her daughter.

Oh man, I was so not upset when I got this doll that had 6 arms and a glowing brain.

I guess there are too many people in the US with fantasies of owning a black woman for them to make it to Canada.

Barbie? Well that's the problem right there.  What she wants is a L'*a (pronounced La-asterix-a) doll with 6 inch fingernails, oh-no-she-di'int head wagging action, and 3 am Waffle House brawl playset.

Years ago, my daughter wanted Teacher Barbie. Of course, there were none to be found. At my last possible stop I found one. She was a woman of color Teacher Barbie. Cool. A 4 year old's not going to notice, or care, what color skin her doll has. I get in line and look at the guy next to me. He's a gentlemen of color, and has white girl Teacher Barbie.

Yeah. We swapped. And we were both too embarrassed to say a word, or really even make eye contact.

Um. That's what she did.

She didn't like the dolls at the store, so she went elsewhere and found some she could work with. And she bought those.

Since we're looking at yet another issue that in no way directly affects you: why do you care? Why do you even need to render an opinion?

Afro-Canadian Americans are whiter than Caucasian USA North Americans.

The majority of black women I see in North America have straight hair.  Be it chemical, ironed, or a weave.

I worked at the East Hanover location. For a week.

They put me in charge of the Barbie aisle. It's been years, but the PTSD won't go away. Some nights, I wake up in a cold sweat, shivering and whispering "I still don't see a difference between Barbie Jeans and Barbie *Designer* Jeans...."

The horror. The horror.

THIS. She's not complaining... she's doing something positive without being preachy or overbearing. Nice job!

Mattel should notice this and do the right thing... but more likely they'll try and find a way to sue her. (Sorry, the cynic in me had to have its say)

+1 great headline, subby.

Also, +1 for that mom.

csb/s

Some years ago I was on a committee that puts together a Blues Festival that benefits our Food Bank. One year I met a family (white) with a 7yr old daughter in tow who loved blues so much that she had her mom buy her a black Barbie and they customized it to look like Koko Taylor, who was performing that night (3 days all-day fest). She had the doll with her. I spoke to a few people and we arranged to have her and her mom go along for the ride to the airport to pick Ms.Taylor up. Koko had a granddaughter the same age at the time, and was tickled pink. Tho Koko tried to refuse, that little girl insisted on gifting the doll to her. With a tear in her eye she accepted it.
Side note: Koko wore her hair straight and the doll's hair was cut to the correct length.

There isn't a demand for Black Barbie, perhaps because Black Barbie cannot be bought with an EBT card. Just sayin.

I have the pleasure of having a black grandmother, Afro-Colombian, and so I guess that makes me creole(high yellow), a quadroon if you will.  Throw in the Italian and the jewish side, and it is next to impossible for me to be racist.

Since when is pointing out reality being racist?

The majority of black Canucks have been exceedingly white-bread, and there is nothing wrong with that.
