"Knocked for six"

I get that this means they were surprised, but does anyone know the origin of this odd phrase?

cricket is the sport.   Highest score. Ball is hit out of the "park" earning 6 points.
To be completely, surprised, devastated.
It can be use many ways. Meaning is contextual.

can be shortened to " a sixer"

My wife asking for a divorce was a real sixer.
