Neat stuff except that the mind pictures are pretty rough and hardly look anything like the individuals. OK you can get a feel for gender and race, that's about it.

Still pretty neat.

I hope people realize that the output only looks like faces because it is assembled from the training faces depending on how their brain activation corresponds to that of a new face.

It's interesting to speculate how much inaccuracy is due to the technology, and how much is due to the machine accurately reading how the person mis-remembered what the person looked like.  One might even try to infer the viewer's biases depending how the face changed in their mind.

How would you tell them apart? They would all just look like a blurry pair of pancakes with a blurry pepperoni in the middle.

Don't the scans of the brains also, by neccessity, include the scans of the skull?  I'd think that is the part that makes facial reconstruction easier.

That just makes it more cool.  If theory, as they extend the database of test faces, they should be able to significantly improve accuracy.

Mr President, lie down in this FMRI machine and look at these pictures of nuclear launch codes. No need to worry, it's for science.

You could say the same thing about pretty much any human development of technology:

-making fire
-pointed sticks
-flint knapping

etc.

Once this method is more refined, I wonder if it will be able to reproduce images straight out of a persons dreams.

Interesting that you mention that, for I have just patented a "Dreammachine" which allows a user to transmit their thoughts, or dreams to a highly sophisticated network of imagery and film sensors, enabling the subject to "view" their nightly dreams as a film or movie upon awaking. In the very near future my product will allow folks to upload copies of their dreams to the youtubes, and even splice them with other dream films, rendering the horror, and porn film industries obsolete.

Walter Bishop would be amused. He would claim he could do the same thing, but better, and then he would ask "But do I have to keep them alive while I do it?"
