On TAX DAY. Coincidence? Shartbongo obviously directed the IRS to do this to distract us from Benghazi.

This is worth waking your kids up for. I would have, so here since my kids are grown and I can't do that anymore-

Huh, I see eclipses of the moon all the time...on cloudy nights.

That's the day after the memorial... Sweet!

There is no dark side in the moon, really. Matter of fact, it's all dark.

Came for the Pink Floyd reference, leaves (somewhat) satisfied (it took too damn long).

Why come we only ever get lunar eclipses here? It's just not fair. I want a solar eclipse.

Foxxinnia: Why come we only ever get lunar eclipses here? It's just not fair. I want a solar eclipse.

Me too.  Unfortunately lunar eclipses are usually visible to a large swatch of the globe, while solar eclipses are only visible in a small region - less than 300 km wide.  The annular eclipse last year, for example, was mostly visible from the back of beyond in Australia.  NASA has a list if you want to see where and when.

Between 2 and 530 AM EDT?  Pass.

It's actually freaking awesome for my part of the world. Just a bit before 10:30 to 3am , and at 1am it's right in the middle of the eclipse. And to boot it's like a birthday present 3 days early!

Assuming I don't move, I'll have one straight overhead in 2017.  That will be my first ever total solar eclipse.

My father once loaded us kids up in the minivan and drove an hour away to see the lunar eclipse in the middle of winter in ANCHORAGE ALASKA.

Been there, done that. While I remember seeing the moon change color, the only other thing I remember is we were listening to the alvin and the chipmunks christmas tape (back when they had tapes).

Need an eclipse reminder?

There might be other countdown timers out there now.

Or you could just go with Karen's Countdown Timer II.

Do libertarians acknowledge the moon? It isn't acting in its own rational self interest....

I remember seeing a Total Solar Eclipse back in the 80's, when I was a kid. School got scheduled for a half day, I think, cause they knew there was no way any of the kids would be worth anything afterwards. It was farking cool. Looks like there's one coming in 2017, and luckily I seem be in the path. Although the wife and I would totally drive to see it.

so just to be clear, it's april 14th evening, through to april 15th morning?

(missed the maximum of a meteor shower because of that once..was still pretty good the night after:-)

Although you do need to be careful of what might show up during such event...

And if you're in Hawaii, the best part of the action is 8pm-11pm on the 14th. Last week I visited a bunch of classrooms of 1st and 2nd graders to talk about science and stuff, and told almost 200 kids about the eclipse. I dunno how much of it I'll get to see, though - I think I'm stuck working on the summit of Mauna Kea that night.

/but they have school the next morning, so I dunno if their folks will let them stay up.

Wake them. Give them the experience mediated only by their eyeballs. I've woken up my kid to watch meteor showers and eclipses. He can sleep when I'm dead.
