Midwest, their map didn't give me an AQI. My states AQI site says 42 for my area though.

That one spot in China that is 999, wowza.

Sounds like a problem that will sort itself out.

Or maybe 999 means the air is so full of pollutants that you couldn't go out if you wanted to because the air's gotten so chunky it'll hold doors close from the outside...and Mao help the people whose doors open inward.

Better hurry its now 78, and it HAS been over 400 within the last 48 hours.

Seriously thats some REALLY bad air over there.  The fact that 73 is seen as good is a truly damning statement

This is why we should get rid of the EPA. We are falling way behind in important pollution production.

I remember when Kotaku was one of the premier blogs to go to for gaming news.  Ever since they scooped and had that tussle with Sony, they had developed into a force in the industry.

Now, they just post whatever the hell comes to mind.  Hey look at these crazy Japanese dolls!  Now look at Neil Degrasse Tyson eating a sandwich!  Hey, remember Mega Man?!  Well we don't either, so here's a blanket with an anime chick on it with fake boobs installed!

Maybe I just got old...

Given the 2 800+ readings nearby my guess is the machine maxed out at 999, its probably higher.

It probably goes out of scale at 999. God only knows what it really is.

If particulate though, a good HEPA gas mask and Bob's your uncle! Remember kids! Change your filters twice a day!

If it makes you feel better, the measuring equipment probably isn't calibrated to read accurately at 999. There could easily be only 900 toxons per alveolus.

Funny/horrifying story....

I went to China for work pretty regularly.  This was before everyone knew how bad the pollution was.  I honest to god just thought it was really foggy for the first two weeks.  Then as it never went away I realized...to my utter horror....that wasn't fog.

I'd never imagined it was possible for it to be that bad without killing everyone.

-was paid more for being willing to travel into that.  Also flew there while SARS was an issue.

i could be wrong but i think the map includes pollen counts to get the overall air quality.

LA has had it's air quality improved so drastically, it is a surprise when one cannot see the San Gabriel mountains due to pollution.

I don't remember the last time we had a smog/bad air quality day in LA.

Ditto with Southern California. I remember smog so bad as a kid that it would hurt to breathe at times. Add the better air quality to the fact that I quit smoking back in August and my lungs feel better than ever.

2014-03-28 11:33:25 PM
8 here currently. It's such a difference from PHX... but they don't have numbers there to back that up. But I can just tell by breathing.

Yeah, that's probably a reporting limit.

I know a guy who does air quality monitoring here.  He was talking with some air quality people from China and one of them discussed pollution in terms of milligrams per cubic meter.  He figured this was a translation error and asked if she didn't mean micrograms per cubic meter.  Nope, she really meant milligrams.

My wife is from China.  She never realized dried snot is white until she came here.  Snow is not something she normally encountered there to compare.

Having grown up in Anchorage I can address 2 points:

1)  Inversion during winter traps air for extended periods of time (a week or so) causing higher polution.

2) when the cottonwood blooms there is floaty fluff EVERYWHERE in Anchorage.  I don't know if that counts as pollution, but there can be pretty high pollen counts then.
