xalres: NicktheSmoker: Also, shouldn't she also get a ticket for using her damn phone while driving?

As far as I know, that's not illegal in Florida yet. My brother in law was constantly on his phone/texting/checking email when I visited him down there, drove me nuts. I asked him if he was worried about getting a ticket and he said it wasn't against the law yet.

I was driving in Florida a few years back, my fiancee was like, holy shiat, look at that!  I look over to the right, a girl, driving with her knees, texting.  At 60MPH.
I was like, OK, getting the hell away from that, so I overtook her in the left lane, and as I passed, notice that the entire front of her car had collision damage much like you would get from rear ending someone.

farking Florida.

nijika: Oh lordy I love the amount of projection in this thread.  So many rootin' tootin' urban cowboys in their Ford F450's seeing their hero ditch his motorized penis trying to pass the blame for his moronic actions on to a woman in a minivan obeying the rules of the road.

Other than her filming a guy threatening her in his oversized pickup, she's doing everything else properly, including staying the course when faced with an aggressive driver.

That's what you get, cowboys.  You aren't traffic heroes for tailgating.

Yes, other than being just as dangerous as he is on the road, she's doing everything correctly. That's the ticket!

My 2 cents:  The woman driver was not speeding, however, from the video, there wasn't much traffic, and she could have easily gotten over to let the truck pass.  She said she was in the left lane to turn (she can say anything she wants), but the vid is almost 2 minutes long and her turn never comes.

She may not have HAD to get over, as she apparently wasn't breaking the law (regarding staying right except to pass), but she didn't.  Why not?  Who knows.  But just because you CAN do something doesn't mean you SHOULD.

The woman, while not breaking the law, still showed an utter disregard for her safety and the safety of others by willfully not letting the truck pass, and filming while driving.  She said she does this a lot, as if it's her mission to aggravate other drivers, then play victim when they take umbrage with her.  IMHO, she is just as dangerous as the guy in the truck, and her "accident" is coming.

jso2897: Noticeably F.A.T.: sammyk: So I repeat. You want to kick the anthill because you are not a courteous driver. I didn't say anything about the legality.

Last time I bothered to post in a traffic thread I was informed in no uncertain terms that any behavior at all is acceptable as long as it's within the bounds of the law. Going out of your way to piss off other drivers is A-OK, as long as you don't break the law doing it.

Well, technically, it is - but it's not good policy. When I detect a speed demon or road rager in my vicinity, I endeavor to get the hell out of their way, and otherwise ignore them. Once in a great while, somebody still gets pissed off at me, but i just drive defensively and pay them no mind. It's your problem if you get mad at me, and I won't let you make it mine.

I notice that completely ignoring a road rager will infuriate them even more.

I have, once or twice, looked over at them, and gave them a tongue out hand waving from nose face.  Like you'd do when you were five.  Infuriates them even more actually.

But, living in NY, I have to deal with a whole bunch of road raging, illegally driving asshats whenever I take to the wheel.

Your best bet is to ignore them, and basically, let them have their train wreck somewhere else, where you aren't.  Much like this video.

So she didn't want to stay right with the slower traffic, rather she wanted to hang out in the left lane and leisurely pass 'em like that.  That's on her. If you can't stand the heat of the kitchen, the get the fark out. If you're not prepared to do what it takes to pass slower traffic, stay the fark to the right! I had a great interaction with  a road rage moron awhile back:

I was coming onto the highway along a very busy entrance ramp like I do EVERY day, and this ramp turns into an off ramp in a short distance, so you must merge onto the highway quickly.

I had 3 car lengths to merge into between cars (which is more than you usually have here) and this chick in a mustang purposefully guns it  to close the gap so that I can't merge.  I give her a WTF face and should shrug as we are staring face to face and she begins to flip me the bird... BLAAAMMO.... she rear ended the car in front of her since traffic had stopped and she was focusing on screwing me over.

Laugher. OH. EL!

...we were only within eyesight of eachother for like 50 feet so I really don't know how she could have had anything against me to pull this? I guess she was having a bad day that got even worse.

But once this dbag who needed to get an extra car length home comes tear assing in and bumped a driver swerved off the road and ended up on his side on the embankment. Shocking that you are from CT with that attitude.  The majority of asshat drivers in NY will have a CT or NJ plate.  Protip:  There are actually traffic laws in NYC.  I know that you must feel some sort of inferiority/envy of NY, and NYC (I'm in the big bad city, there are no laws!), but no need to prove your toughness.  Don't drive like an asshat just because you're in NYC, and feel like you have something to prove.  The majority of NY'ers drive like reasonable, common sense, safe drivers.

After reviewing the Florida Diver's Manual 2014, the woman was in the right, even though she was in the left lane of the two lanes of traffic. She explained she was passing slower vehicles in the right lane, then planned to turn left further down the highway. From what I could see, U.S. 41 is not a limited access highway like I-4, I-75 or the Florida Turnpike. So the left lane allows for passing and/or making left turns at breaks in the median between the opposing traffic flows.

Mr. Dumbass wanted to pass her, tailgated her and finally did pass her in the right lane. His behavior before and after passing was a danger to both of them. Fortunately nobody got hurt. And he got all the citations. As the woman didn't get any citations, even for filming the incident, I'm not the only one with the opinion she wasn't in the wrong.

I don't like left-lane Nazis on Interstates either. But, if they're passing slower traffic and doing the speed limit, I just chill out and enjoy the ride. Legally, they're correct. Now, if they continue to ride in the Interstae passing lane after clearing the slower traffic in the right lane, they've gone into poor driving skills mode. I'll pass them on the right safety and let them go on their merry way.

The longer video only showed her showing traffic to her immediate right for just a split second, it appeared to be clogged there so assuming that was representing the situation as it was, there was no place to get into the slow lane.

If however, you feel like Ford Truck Man's behavior was okay no matter what when frankly, we can't properly assess from the video and her's was egregious, maybe you need to turn in that Crackerjack license when you turn 18.

Gonz: OregonVet: sammyk: Meh, left lane nazis' make my blood boil

I don't think 55+ in a 50 zone is hogging the left lane if you have a turn coming up.

No, no, no. This is Fark. If you're driving in the left lane, it doesn't matter how fast you're going. If the car behind you wants to go faster, that's your problem, and you'd better let them pass you or you're wrong.

Also, someone in the right lane going exactly the speed limit is a hazard to everyone else on the road. I've been told this many, many times.

Also people never, ever come up on your bumper like they want to pass then drive reeeeaaaallllly slowly right next to you and trap you behind the slow car in the right lane. Or go any speed between 20 and 80 completely at random. Hey, you can stay behind until you figure out how fast you're going.

Oh, and the woman making the video while drive, she's a major dick. Hope there's a law against taking a video while driving and she gets cited.

This whole "the left lane is reserved" idiocy has gone too far.  There's just no damn reason for it in the first place.  And because of it, you have an entire lane of travel that's basically wasted space.  Plus, the right-hand lane gets beat to hell, and it makes merging onto the highway (and being on the highway being merged onto) a pain in the ass.  It was a cute experiment, but frankly it's over.  It hasn't made people more courteous or reduced a single commuter's drive time.  All it's done is provide a bunch of whiny rednecks with a reason to get all road-ragey.  The supposed reason ("it's skeeery to pass on the right!") is moronic at best.  If you're concerned about that issue, then educate people on how to use turn signals and side mirrors.  Don't stop using an entire lane of travel because idiots can't check their effing blind spot.

(I don't travel in the left lane- the law's the law, after all.  But it still pisses me off to see an entire highway with only half the road used, and that half composed of potholes and patches.)

I only do it when I see someone weaving through traffic to get that one extra car length ahead before the next red light.  I'll leave a tantalizing amount of space in between me and the car ahead of me (a little more than a car length, what everyone 'should' leave anyway) and when I see the little lane diver revving up next to me I instantly close the gap.  Sorry pal, your little Honda shiatmobile doesn't out accelerate my V8, nice try though.

After looking at the actual statutes, I see that in Florida, the law does require you to move out of the way of an overtaking vehicle if you are going ten (or more) m.p.h. slower than the posted speed limit in the leftmost lane. Still nothing about angry headlight flashing OR tailgating  by thumb-dicked rage-a-holic assholes, though.

I've had people drive too slow or cut me off or whatever. It happens but it never escalates beyond that. If a violent reaction is a common occurrence for her I'm going to conclude she's probably doing something to incite it. The only constant here is her. She's a self righteous attention whore on a little vigilante crusade. Guy looked like he was enjoying the attention of being filmed and hamming it up a bit. Do you assume flashing headlights are road rage? I'll use them if someone is driving at/under in the left lane impeding progress for a long period of time with open opportunities to move over. It seems a lot safer than passing on the right or tailgating.

When your intersection comes up, flip the blinker on, get over and make your turn.

I'm not absolving Ms. Filmypants of her behavior.  More Douchy, Less Douchy is what we have here.

for good or for awesome: Roads with intersections every few hundred yards don't have fast lanes.  I'm not going to weave in and out of traffic to make my turn just so you can drive a couple miles and hour faster than me.  Even if you are a big tough guy in a truck.

They do in Florida. On two lane highways (a non-residential roadway), intersections or not, you must move to the right I you're not passing.

justtray: The thing I hate about these threads is how selfish drivers will always come up with tenuous justifications for their irresponsible behavior.

The truck guy is a huge douche beyond all comprehension. I've dealt with road rage like that and it's not fun.

However, there is a good argument to be made that the 'f you i do what i want' crowd on the road is directly contributing to increased traffic across the country. If you go to Europe you notice how everyone immediately gets to the right on the road ALL THE TIME. The left lane is literally clear because people file in to the right as you're supposed to.

Look, if you're about to turn left, great. But that means you're about to turn left in the next couple hundred yards, not next few miles. It takes roughly 5 seconds to switch lanes.

The rule is very, very simple. Either catch up to the car in front of you, or get over to the right lane if there's someone directly behind you. That is the correct way to drive. Any attempt to justify not doing so is an attempt to hide a self-centered view of the world, one that not only causes everyone else inconvenience, but yourself as well due to others sharing the same narrow, ignorant worldview.

Amen.
