By the time it petered out in the late 2000s, Satterlee and his fellow secessionists had announced their independence from Snohomish County (based on a petition that drew more than 12,000 signatures), appointed a sheriff (a former FBI agent who legally changed his name to "Fnu Lnu")...

Seems legit.

Headline salad.

Is this NBC's way of saying "see what you get when you question the government?"

Sounds like the opposite of irony to me.

When herpaderps think they're smart enough to be in charge, all sorts of crazy can happen.

The secession bill passed one branch of the legislature. If it had passed the other would we be reading glowing eulogies for the popular sheriff and county commissioners tragically killed in a landslide?

This reminds me of people who live near active volcanos and then refuse to leave when it looks like its going to blow. This happened when Mount St. Helens blew up thirty years ago. There were people living in the area who refused to evacuate, and they were never seen again.

2014-03-28 10:01:02 AM
And now how much money are they spending to clean up and find their bodies?

"He threatened me many times," former Snohomish County Sheriff Rick Bart told NBC News as searchers continued to dig through the debris in a desperate hunt for survivors or victims. "He was going to arrest me on one occasion. He was a pain in my rear end for a long, long time."

And now he's buried under tons of logs and earth. That's too bad.

This is a sadder version of the folks who build their beautiful ocean front beach home on the face of a rapidly eroding cliff, and then whine when they can't sell their now uninsurable $$$$$$$$$ property.

Sadder because in that case you get some warning, and can watch your dream home fall into the sea from a safe distance.

I don't usually quote the bibble, but even Jesus made fun of these people.

Everyone therefore who hears these words of mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man, who built his house on a rock. The rain came down, the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat on that house; and it didn't fall, for it was founded on the rock. Everyone who hears these words of mine, and doesn't do them will be like a foolish man, who built his house on the sand. The rain came down, the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat on that house; and it fell-and great was its fall.

I saw plenty of interviews with people from the Jersey shore who were explaining how they were not going to leave their homes before Hurricane Sandy. It was very clear that if someone told them not to jump off a bridge they would be over the edge in a second.

When I first came here, this was all swamp. Everyone said I was daft to build a castle on a swamp, but I built in all the same, just to show them. It sank into the swamp.

I still remember the big flood on the Mississippi when people built homes on the flood plains.

Filed a lawsuit jointly with Guadalupe demanding $125,000 from Snohomish County for work they'd done representing their breakaway constituency and took it all the way to the state Supreme Court, where it was rejected as "legally incoherent despite a heavy larding of pseudo-legal rhetoric."

My new Fark handle.

These farkwad secessionists irritate me. They live under the safety and rules supplied by society at large, but want to pretend they don't have to contribute to that society and be all independent-I-don't-need-to-do-what-you-say-I-have-to-do.

Change the rules from within, but to secceed?  We addressed that by 1865--gunblast to the face for you.

Wow.  They were actually warned not to build there.  They were so adamant that the surveyors didn't know what they were talking about that they tried to seperate from the gov't entity.

And it turns out the surveyors were exactly right.

Wow...
