Alright, someone post that Tom Clancy book page screenshot and get it over with already.

Hey guys, I have an idea.  Let's have NATO, led the Set A Good Example USA send a whole bunch of troops and equipment to Ukraine over the next six months or so and forceably take back Crimea.

What could go wrong?

AngryDragon: "I have no further territorial demands in Europe"

Well, I see this thread has already been Godwinned...

On a more serious note. I do not think Putin wants to reform the Soviet Union, per se. I think he truly wants to reestablish "Greater Russia" where Russians actually live. It would be economic suicide to forcefully reintigrate unwilling regions such as the (lower) 'Stans such as uz-beki-beki-stan...

On the other hand there is plenty of room for picking up the empty areas of Kazakhstan, eastern Ukraine, and Belarus (when Lukashenka dies/is killed/overthrown by "fascists", etc).

See: Eurasian Union - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurasian_ Economic_Union

Also, here's a nice map of what I think Putin is going for: (the dark red areas)

Let's just accept he's not going to stop. I'm not sure why he would he's had some sanctions thrown at him but he has gotten EVERYTHING he has gone after.... Why stop?

i don't know how accurate that map is, because crimea is pink

also eastern russia is already russian-minority, if anything China has claim over that region based on ethnicity

We should mobilize our dude and send him over there to face off with their dudes.  A couple of bong hits and things would be cool.  Bong diplomacy, man!

I think there might be some confusion, at least here in the US, because we say "America" but "the US". And when people are used to saying it the wrong way it's hard to change.

There is not an up-to-date map that is easy to googles since that map includes many countries. Crimea is, technically, pink since only the major cities are Russian...the country folk are more Ukrainian.

It is more meant as a guide book, you know, like Моя Борьба.

Sounds like Putin is about to get some more sanctions. This third round (or are we up țo 4?) will make him think a few times before he annexes anything else, that's for sure.

'The Ukraine' was mainly used during the Soviet era.

You know that could be interesting, do what China did to India awhile back. Walk troops in a few miles, set up a camp, and leave after a few days.

It would be so wtf Putin would be at a loss. Make a unit with one soldier from every NATO member to realty screw with him.

"Hey, Ukraine, what's happening? Uhh...I'm going to need you to move your border. Now, if you could get it to go as far back against Kyiv as possible, that would be great. That way, we'll have some room for more boxes and things we need to put in here. So if you could get to that as soon as possible, that would be terrific. Have a nice lunch, Ukraine. Bye."

This... This idea I like. It is just this sort of creativity that is notably lacking in our military leaders today. Putin, of course, could just bomb the shiat out of the guys you send. Good luck getting volunteers for that mission. Now as far as I am concerned, I think we already have a better and far more intimidating means to do this: The Boston Dynamics Wildcat. Strap some guns or rockets (maybe some drum-fed AA-12 shotguns? AT-4 rockets?) to that baby and let about 24 of them loose to run a circuit through russian territory. Either the russians will be terrified or they will die laughing at the sound these things make.
