Special interest groups have no interest in allowing the use of humor to highlight problems... If you're poking fun at their cause so you should be fired.  It also doesn't matter if you weren't personally responsible as it was done under the aegis of your show.

But it's still completely okay for Dan Snyder to be a racist arseclown because he is wealthy. Hell, he even gave the nice little indian folks some coats and stuff, because giving them stuff to keep warm never ended badly before.

I don't think Colbert should be labeled "professionally offended" but I agree with you that he is taking this Redskin thing too far.

Yeah, but "ching chong ding dong" might be a legitimate name for the foundation, because that's the sound that the silverware makes when you throw it in the air and it falls to the floor, right?

They call you racist around here for pointing out inconsistencies like that.

Comedians are only responsible for entertaining people by making them laugh - they have no other contract to fill.  Once you start muzzling them because one group or other find them offensive we all lose a little more freedom.

actually, yes.  this is pretty much exactly right.  these things dont happen in a vacuum.  Societal stature has to be considered.

2014-03-28 09:19:17 AM
Well, yes, that would certainly appear very racist if you didn't understand satire or bother to understand the context of said satire.

I'm sure blindly rushing to outrage for your own selfish, attention-whoring purposes helps too.

I hope he escalates this. He's had some pretty big brass balls in the past, hopefully he doesn't cave and just mocks the shiat out of all the people who are so terribly offended because they choose to completely ignore the point.

What? We need more light rail in this nation.

Accessible web document standards. The text in the screen cap wouldn't be read by text-to-voice software.

Also, your sentences are ungrammatical. You should be fired.

Asians get the benefit of the doubt in pretty much every aspect of society that matters.  They have access to the best schools, they receive stellar grades, and are often times sought out for well paying positions at companies.  The exact opposite is true of African Americans.  They are placed in the worst schools in the nation, written off before they have even uttered a sentence in class, and shunned in all important aspects of society.

So, yes, I am very sure the Asian community has absolutely no room to whine about humor being directed at them.  It is not harmful to them, and in fact is probably helpful to minority communities that generally absord the brunt of those attacks as it takes the attention away from them for a bit.

So Colbert is distancing himself from a "racist" tweet that is an exact quotation of something he said on Wednesday night on his nationally broadcast show?

2014-03-28 09:31:27 AM
In a vacuum, the "Ching Chong" tweet seems over-the-top racist, however in the context of, remembering this is Colbert after all, satire against unapologetic racism and other -isms it makes perfect sense.  That's why it works on the show, with context, and stings in isolation.

MightyPez: Maybe watch the clip? He was using an extremely offensive stereotype to make a comparison to the Redskins opening a hollow charity.

Exactly.

QRoberts: So Colbert is distancing himself from a "racist" tweet that is an exact quotation of something he said on Wednesday night on his nationally broadcast show?

If you think about it, that's probably the biggest problem. It makes perfect sense to anybody who watched the bit, but without that context it could certainly be easy to mistake it for simple, overt racism.

Basically, a bunch of whiny assholes blew something up that was perfectly sensible for the target audience by promoting it to people who don't watch the show and wouldn't get it just so they could biatch and complain about something.

It's almost like certain groups out there intentionally remove things from their context for the purposes of creating a false controversy they can attack... I wonder why and who...

Yes, without the history of satirical send-ups of Tea Partiers and conservatives, this satire would be just another log on the fire of "f*ck you, different people!"  And it wouldn't have been a joke coming from them, either because God knows the only people that have ever been oppressed in their world are wealthy white people.

Your meaningless opinion on a thing that hasn't happened and how you imagine it might play out if it did is noted. Did you want to speculate wildly on anything else that exists solely in your own head or did that satisfy your need to complain about how you think you might be slighted given the possibility of certain hypothetical events?
