If  it was that good why didn't you and people like you watch it when it was on TV. You have nobody to blame for the cancellation of Firefly, but yourselves. Firefly opened to a 4.1 rating, third in it's time slot, and dropped as low as a 2.4

When you consider that Saturday afternoon golf clocks in at about a 3.5 you can see why Firefly was cancelled.

Fox gets shiat for it, but at least they tried to air this show, you people just did not watch it.

Pretty sure this conversation has been had umpteen bajillion times before, but the show was poorly publicized, aired out of order and in a shiatty timeslot.

And the show was great and unjustly cancelled way before its time. I think it hurts more now because there is literally -no- TV show set on a spaceship currently being aired. Hell there's not even a stargate anymore.

The closest we have that I can think of is Falling Skies, and while I enjoy it (and am sure I'll be ridiculed for saying so) it's not the same as a space opera (or western)

I'd pay infinite dollars for a new space show, preferably one with an overarching plot, and even better if it was given the HBO treatment.

Exactly.  Airing a show out of order is an automatic death sentence for the most part, but they also kept screwing up when it was airing.  I tried to watch it once or twice, but it was always rescheduled to a later time because of sports programs and the like, which meant that, even if I set my VCR to record it (dear lord, that's how old the show is), I was never able to see it.

I bought the DVDs, but I really would have liked to see more.

Look, I love me some Nathan Fillion, and the show is excellent, but there are better shows worth the rabid fan following that Firefly.

Yup, they fly Moya right into the Vorlan's deathstar to prevent them from blowing up the Aesir home world.

I think Firefly being cancelled was like Kurt Cobain dying young.  They both had good stuff and then died before they ran out of ideas, so they're immortalized as brilliant.  Neither one had the chance to descend into a lame self-parody like Axel Rose.

As a bona-fide sci-fi nut I just want to say the cancellation of this show was announced before I even knew it existed. I honestly think it would have gone different if it had a decent slot and had aired the episodes in the proper order. I think the brilliant pilot was shown after 7 or 8 episodes had aired.

So watch Agents of SHIELD instead. Basically the same characters flying around to different locations each week.
Coulson = Mal
May = Zoe
Sky = River
Fitz = Kaylee
Simmons = Simon
Ward = Cobb
Upcoming Girlfriend of Coulson = Irina
???? = Preacher

Further:
Serenity = The Bus
Serenity shuttles = Two vehicles on The Bus.
Mystery of trying to figure out who River/Sky is while telling the big evil government organization to go blow? Check.
If the Clairvoyant ends up being secretly created by SHIELD in the first place then we have the equivalent of Reapers.
There are many more details I could go into but I'm not alone in seeing the parallels between the two shows based on the hits I got from Google about comparing the two.

And guess what, almost no one is watching this either and it is likely to get cancelled. Can't say it isn't due to lack of advertising, not sure Tuesday PM is the best time slot. But it has the same slow burn and may be too late for it to get popular enough to save it. Fans of the show will argue it isn't because it is bad, poorly written, etc. But for some reason it just isn't catching on and unless it does it will go the same way as Firefly for the same reasons.

In some of the earliest episodes, Voyager felt a lot like The Odyssey set in space.  Which admittedly isn't particularly original given that The Odyssey is thousands of years old, but I thought it worked reasonably well.

After Season 1, I definitely agree that it went downhill fast.

The network aired the episodes OUT OF ORDER.

I watched it when it was on because I am a Whedon fan, but it was obvious that showing "Trainjob" first was pants-on-head retarded.

It had moments of brilliance, but it wasn't the best sci-fi by a long shot.

And I have mixed feelings about the movie. I won't spout off since someone hasn't seen it yet.

You're largely correct, but it's not quite the same. They're doing their best to screw that one up, too. When was the last one aired? When's the next one? It's a pita.

d3: So watch Agents of SHIELD instead.

There is very little chance of Agents of SHIELD getting cancelled. First, Disney owns both the distribution company making it and the network it airs on, so it has an interest in airing its own product rather than having to buy someone else's product. Second, Disney also owns Marvel, and SHIELD is a natural vector for advertising new Marvel properties, doing promotional cross-overs, etc.

Third, it's raw ratings aren't great, but when same-day DVR viewing is factored in, it regularly beats "Glee" in the timeslot, and its 7-day ratings (live viewers plus those that watch it on DVR within 7 days of airing) are almost double (78%, according to ABC) the live viewing numbers. That might put a regular show on the bubble of cancel/renew, but add that to the first two points, and it's essentially a guarantee that it'll get renewed. Now, maybe that renewal will be a half-season order rather than a whole, but there will definitely be more SHIELD next season.

Ok ok, sure the only good ones were the ones focusing on the EMH or 7 of Tits, and sure they had shiat like "Threshold" and Neelix but come on man, it wasn't that bad.

I also never heard of it until it was already cancelled. Granted I had the excuse of living overseas at the time, but even then I usually heard about stuff like that from friends I had stateside. The show had potential. There weren't a whole lot of sci-fi elements other than being set in space, but damn if the characters weren't well done and the chemistry between the cast was awesome.
