FTA: The officer followed a dark trail of what appeared to be engine fluid to Smalley's Onalaska house...

I can't tell you how many times I've had to tell my wife to check the engine fluid level. If it gets low, you're screwed.

It's dark. The cop wasn't going to stop and lick the fluid to see whether it was oil, brake, antifreeze, or transmission. They're all dark fluids. What would YOU have described it as?

Two of those are not even "engine fluids." Maybe just "fluid".

FTA: Smalley's breath sample registered .150. He was arrested and cited for OWI (1st offense), hit-and-run unattended vehicle; failure to notify police of an accident; and operating left of center.

So, driving while being ultra liberal is illegal?

I'm well aware of the difference in the various fluids in a moving vehicle.  That's why I mentioned several!

Fluid is non specific. Was it blood? Urine? Water? Why would any of those indicate a car accident? Car fluid? Maybe it wasn't a car, then he's wrong for that. Engine fluid is perfectly fine at communicating that it was a dark fluid critical to the function of the vehicle, you're just being overly pedantic.
