I'd say Spielberg gets most of the blame. He's the freakin' director. And it's not like he's some chump the studio can push around. He can make any movie exactly as he wants, for all intents and purposes, and the Indiana Jones movie he chose to make was the Crystal Skull.

South Park pretty much nailed it.

Was it over when the Germans bombed the Crystal Skull home planet?  Hell no!

Reboot it with a new actor.  Or reboot it under a different title, use the same group of people just rename him. Or hell do Allen Quartermane movies.

Why do we hate Bradley Cooper again?

2014-03-28 07:13:27 AM
I hate to say it, but I can see Bradley Cooper doing a good job...in that type of role.

Meaning, if Harrison Ford wasn't already Indiana Jones, Cooper would have been good too.

italie: Why do we hate Bradley Cooper again?

Because he was in movies that were seen on more than the screen at the little indie theater down the street from the small loft in whatever city the average Farker claims to live in.  You know, the theater you've probably never heard of, showing movies you've definitely never heard of.  But they're so much better than the mindless crap that the average American sheeple watch.  fark those flyover state hicks, if they like something, it's obviously shiat, along with any actors that star in those movies.

Inaditch: 'd say Spielberg gets most of the blame. He's the freakin' director.

What he said. All Lucas did was write the story and of course had a producing credit. He didn't write the screenplay and he didn't direct it. Everything that winds up on the screen is on the director. But everyone hates Lucas now so it's all his fault.

Bottom line is that clearly Spielberg has outgrown the material. Raiders of the Lost Ark was directed by a young man who was still a kid at heart, and took the material seriously. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was directed by a man in his early 60s who is rolling up his sleeves to sit down on the floor and play with his grandkids. Plinkett pretty much nailed it in his review.

I like Bradley Cooper because when he was a side character on Alias I thought to myself, "that guy has talent, he's gonna make it big someday." And so now that he is a big star, his success is a validation of my opinions. You're welcome, Bradley! I believed in you!

I don't know why Raiders is a movie that anyone has to "grow out of". Yeah, he moved on to make WWII movies that you can argue are more important but Raiders along with Jaws are still his best films.

I thought it was just because he comes off as a douchebag in all his roles, starting with the Wedding Crasher. But that's fine if that's character. I just don't know if he's capable of playing a non-douchebag.

Not so much, at least in a case like this. There was a deal in play that any film / script had to be signed off on by all three of the principles, Lucas, Spielberg, & Ford. If any one of the three said no, the movie couldn't happen. The alien story was what Lucas came up with, years before they actually made the film. (Lucas came up with the actual plots for all of the Indy films, that was his job). Ford and Spielberg kept resisting the idea, and Lucas kept coming back with slightly altered versions of the alien storyline. After years of this, it became apparent that if they wanted to make the film at all (and they all wanted to make another Indy) then they were going to have to accept Lucas' alien story, so they did so, grudgingly.

Now the CGI animals can be blamed on Spielberg, they're his fault...

I agree that Raiders is the better movie. My point is that he is not the same director now that he was then. In 1981, he took it seriously. In 2008, he treated it like it was kid's stuff.

I thought the same thing.

Who did I see recently that I thought had the "it" factor.... That's going to bug me now.

1. The aliens fit perfect with the Cold War, Atomic Age, and Space Race stuff that was happening in the 50's.

2. The nuke fridge wasn't the worst scene. That's on par with skydiving in a raft and tobogganing down a mountain into a waterfall with it. The monkey scene was the worst.

3. Shia sucked and Lucas totally forgot who Marion Ravenwood was. Way to ruin Karen Allen's comeback.

4. Otherwise it was flawed, the worst of the Indy movies, but not a terrible movie in itself.

I never agreed with all the nitpicking over the alien stuff, really. It's not like there wasn't supernatural stuff in the first three movies.
The frig was pretty bad. Very poorly conceived, but you're right-the monkeys were much worse. That entire scene is pure rubbish, from the spiffy Russian insta-road maker machine to the fencing to riding the tree down into the water. The frig wasn't a whole lot worse than the German pilot skidding his crashed plane through the tunnel and staring at Indy and his dad; or how they turned Marcus into such a moran...both in the third movie.

Well they worshiped the aliens as gods so it followed the religion theme even though it had a sci-fi angle. In a lot of ways Last Crusade was worse than Crystal Skull. Brody, Sallah and even Indy were idiots. As for the fridge scene, they could have shot it so that it didn't look like it would crush every bone in Indy's body but who am I to tell Spielberg how to shott a movie. Just stop blaming Lucas for everything, he didn't film the thing.
