That is SIR Nils to you! Hahaha! I can't believe they knighted a penguin, but apparently you should not tease them about Sir Nils. A Norwegian friend's brother is in the king's guard and she got more than a little huffy with me when I asked if he had to guard the penguin, too. Part of being huffy was wanting to know how the hell I knew about the penguin and calling me a "haestkukk". I KNOW THAT WORD!!! it so happens to be one of my favorite insults

WARNING: Reminiscing wall of text ahead!

I like doing elephant captions.  I used to live in Bangkok during my defense contracting days.  I would go out at night (the only the humidity was bearable enough) and walk over to my local watering hole for a beer or two.  On the way, I would pass mahouts guiding elephants to the tourist areas.  The mahouts would sell cuts of sugarcane stalk to the tourists for fifty cents each, and the tourists in turn would feed them to the elephants.

Illegal as hell of course, and dangerous since the elephants were doped up on whatever expired tranqs the mob could get ahold to keep them controllable.  But I made it a point to buy some cane and rub the pachyderm's forheads while I feed them.  I realize I was probaby enabling the scammers to hurt the beasts.  But they were part of the only friends I had out there.

After awhile the two or three elephants I encountered would recognize me by sight and sound and trot over for their expected treats and elephant-sized scritches.  I always obliged.

Anywhoo, end ranting wall o'text.

Sir Nils lives near me in Edinburgh at the zoo so if anyone is guarding him it may be a panda (who live in the next habitat). The penguin parade is an absolute scream, they all march out of their enclosure and go for a ramble every day during summer.

Update on the mobile vet experiment:  Worked so very much better than a trip in the car!  Buster the wimp still tried to turn into a puma, but vet had a very cool cat restraint bag so he couldn't flail.  She managed to take blood without needing to sedate him.  All told, far less stressful on me and the ol' man (and at $50 for a home visit, slightly cheaper than the vet vet).

Results: Buster, at 15 1/2 has hyperthyroid.  She's recommended a medication that starts with M twice a day.  Said the cost "isn't too bad".  Anyone have any insight?  (Other option the iodide, which Im not thinking to do... )  Meds can be flavored and are liquid to be squeezed onto his food.

Im hopeless at pics, but there's a Pic of Buster the tailless wonder in my profile.....

Funny you should mention that...

Went back to Bangkok several years ago for an 'old farts reunion' of sorts.  I was walking out the door from my hotel when I saw a large elephant guided down the sidewalk toward the bar district.  It was making a characteristic squeek sound (like that elephant in the TV pharma commercials that sits on the woman's chest).  There was a young juvenile I called "squeeky" because of the noise it made.  As an experiment I called out loudly,

"SQUEEEKYY!"

The elephant whipped around (as fast as an elepant can whip around at any rate), saw me, and bellowed before making a beeline charge right at me.  The handlers were trying to reign it in and block it.  But that elephant saw me and was NOT taking no for an answer.  'Bout bowled me over!  We got it under control, and I gave it many scritches and cane stalks.  It (I never found out its gender) then escorted me past some of the more unsavory characters on the street before parting ways with me at the side alley where my pub was.

So you are absolutely correct about the old sayings: elephants DO remember you.

And finally, my last pic of the day.  A last homage to Gremie and Bennie.  ENJOY...

Meds are very do able. Sometimes it is cheaper to get it frm a people parmacy, depending on the script...i will scurry off to gurgle and see what I find..and, ya woot, a home visit! Methediozole? Evidently not very tasty for teh kitty..there is a radioactive iodine treatment as well, very sipucessful, but only available at select vets, and they are gone 1-2 weeks.. Gotta be very expensive..

They called you a "haystack"?

If there was any argument against the concept of entitled aristocracy, it would be the idea of requiring a title and a measure of respect by a commoner to a penguin because the penguin happened to be knighted.  All this IMHO of course.

THAT'S IT!  Methediozole.  Im expecting a call from the place that makes up the doses on Monday.  Im also going to chat up friends who have had their cat meds dispensed at their local pharmacy for less $.

Im hoping the meds aren't too pricey, that the idiot cat will take them without trouble, and will live to be even older than his almost 16....

Oh, and the vet said that the radioactive iodide treatment is like $2,000.00.... and since I paid just a bit more than that in December '12 to have his stupid broken tail amputated, and she said he has to be on the meds before they will do the iodide treatment anyway, Im gonna stick with the meds for a couple months and see if that puts him on an even keel..

Snow fall

I do not know why I am so energized
By the storm.

Wind tickling the chimes,
Herald the snow fall.

Trees wearing scarves of white,
Trailing to the floor below.

Silence,
But for the wind's soft
Sigh.

The snow rains down,
In horizontal sheets.

Coating all,
In clothes of brilliant light.

Snuggling close
To the foundations,
Of our lives.

Here I sit,
Basking in the warmth,
Of friends and family.

Throw another log on the fire
Of our love for one another.

Come,
Warm yourself.

You will
Always be,

Well Come.

I soooooo wanna go see that! I wonder if the Swedes have knighted any polar bears, just to be contrary. :-p

On an only semi-related note, I asked my mom what the name of the king's guard was in Norway, because I had forgotten and I sometimes find googling stuff an insult to my ability to just ask someone and consider it "human interaction". She told me, I tried to repeat it. I started laughing and said it sounds like I'm trying to sing while vomiting. She glared and told me to stick to mangling German if that's how I'm going to be - at my age! - and in the future if I felt the need to poke at Norwegians or mention the guard just call them "HMKG". I am NEVER TO TRY TO SPEAK NORWEGIAN AGAIN OR I CAN SLEEP BY THE RIVER! and then she ended her upset with a very sarcastic "duuuude". hehehe!

Here, have a cat!

Wings

My heart sings,
For I have wings.

For your love for me.
I am now set free.

Waft above the mortal coil.
Watching mankind toil.

Sending love,
Love from above.

Balm to your soul.

I hear your grief,
Our time together
Brief.

Lament not,
Your soul I sought.

You bathed me in light,
Ever in your sight.

We were one,
Yet now are done.

Know that I await.
At the Pearly Gate.

When fate,
Does my heart's wish sate.

And we shall enter in,
Flick of tail,
And a grin.

When I was giving Chloe her thyroid meds I had them formulate them so that 1/4 of a chew was the right dose. She was an amazingly easy-going kitty & she would sit up & beg for a treat. I just stuck the 1/4 chew onto one of her treats & gave it to her after a couple of regular treats. She was such a little sweetheart. She would just sit patiently on my lap when I had to give her sub-q fluids too.

Good luck with your little guy & keep us posted. :)

Ooooo! Gave me a cavity, too! I've always heard cats are the best moms EVER and kinda wondered why cat dads weren't like that, then I was watching something like Cats 101 or Too Cute or some similar show on Animal Planet and they showed a particular breed where the Cat DAD was beyond awesome and involved in kitten raising, too. I totally forget the breed, but I know they were cute and sweet and all business about being parental units. Well, DUH about "cute" - they were kittens with their kitteh parents. Of course they're cute! :-D

That is such an awesome vid.
