Meh. I can't ever get too upset about these kinds of things. This class is not teaching about whatsername, it's teaching students how to collect and analyse data and communicate their findings.

Would I, personally, prefer the students also have to research and learn about subject matter that wasn't already known to them? Sure. But my knowledge of Ned Ludd derived from my class on England during the Industrial Revolution isn't as important as the skills I acquired taking the class.

It is amazing that so many so called educated people that complain about these classes don't understand this. I bet they wouldn't mind if the class taught the same skills, but instead of the topic being Miley Cyrus it was some obscure 16th century figure.

FYI:  The precedent for this sort of class was set years ago (my friends dad was the instructor):

A Jungian Perspective on Madonna's Impact on Collective Consciousness. Paper presented at the 1996 Jacobson Symposium on Communication. The 1996 theme was "Jungian and Archetypal Perspectives on Mass Media and Popular Culture" at Creighton Univerity, Omaha, Nebraska, June, 1996.

It's less about the skills and more about the target demographic.  College students are (by legal definitions) virtually all adults.  They are intended to be pursuing knowledge and all that wonderful jazz.  But the academic elite, the Professors who are pushing humanity's understanding in their respective fields, are coming up with courses that their target demographic (their students) are going to be interested in taking.

No, there isn't anything particularly wrong with a 'fun' summer class that is going to be culturally relevant to a generation who knows and cares about Miley Cyrus, and using her to discuss their opinions on gender roles, fame, race, and whatever else.  Still, at nearly $1,500 per credit hour, this class will (presumably 3 credit hours) is going to run you $4,500.

I can't find the specific course (http://catalog.skidmore.edu/) but I've spent enough time in school to know a blow-off class when I see it.

No, there isn't anything wrong with paying $4,500 to take a class where you don't do a lot of work, get a grade, add more credit hours to your name, in the hopes of one day getting a degree....more power to you.  Taught by a visiting professor who enjoys teaching introductory classes?  Nothing wrong with that either.   Comments from students on RateMyProf include: "Pretty easy grader if you follow her instructions" - also nothing wrong with that.

The class will be 'read this section in the book (that most kids won't read)' coupled with in-class lectures with a discussion/participation grade (where any opinion, no matter how silly is completely valid.  Anyone can wake up, roll out of bed, walk into this class, and give their opinion on whether or not society is fair in their expectations of women to both be 'pure' and 'slutty' or whatever the topic is that day...followed by a 'write how you feel' paper or two.  And, again, there is not a single thing wrong with any of that....

But it's not exactly demonstrating rigorous academic standards.  We're in the midst of rapid 'degree inflation' coupled with skyrocketing tuition and, statistically speaking, a whole lot of students who take classes like this are going to be awfully disillusioned in a few years when they owe 150k (Skidmore is expensive!) and can't find a job because nobody really cares about their opinion on gender role and the supply greatly exceeds the demand for any positions in academia.  Their 4.5 years of education and their 3.5 GPA (did I mention the rampant GPA inflation?  Cause yeah, that's going on too)....translate into a whole lot of 'who cares'.

So you think the purpose of the course is to learn about Miley Cyrus, and not learning to collect and analyze data and communicate your findings using Cyrus as the topic? Would you feel better if the name of the course was a critical analysis of 16th century contemporary literature? The goal of both courses is to teach the same skills.

Which you can do with just about any of class tnat has some value. This is just another excuse to provide employment to a professor with a useless degree in a near unmarketable field of study and allowing the college to make some money fo students in the process.

Again, she's not teaching the field of study to those students, she's teaching them (giving her the benefit of the doubt for arguments sake) how to analyze and communicate.  The important part of her dissertation is that she wrote and defended a dissertation.  That's the skillset that matters.

My undergraduate thesis was about Augusto Sandino and the Nicaraguan Constitutionalist War of 1926.  What job, exactly, does that subject matter prepare me for?  The skills I learned, however, from a University you've likely never heard of* (but was, last I checked, listed in the top 50 history programs Jeremy Clarkson voice In the WORLD!) have provided me a career writing documentation by and for STEM graduates (who, in many many cases, do NOT have the skills necessary to write clearly, concisely, etc. etc.)

Look, I'm not saying you're wrong about many of the problems you've pointed out in Academia, but I don't think it necessarily or inherently translates into a waste of time for the students taking the class.

Pay attention-You can acquire those skills in more useful classes.  The people who take these classes  wil be first up sniveling about their student loan debt and complaining about not being able to find a job to pay it off.

Making this a subject area of study is a waste of education resources.

There are college students from every major who took a variety of classes that are sniveling about their student loans. I hate when people like you use that line to justify a class or major you don't agree with when in reality it is happening with every major across the board.

And by the way, if they effectively learn those skills, then it isn't a waste of educational resources. If they are sitting in a class with a topic that has no interest to them so they don't pay attention, and therefore don't learn those skills, then that is a waste of educational resources. When you teach something, and want people to actually learn it, you find a way to teach it so that they will be interested in it.
