uttertosh: Magorn: sugar_fetus: Because People in power are Stupid: could be because of the libertarian beliefs he advocates online.

So he deserved it.

So, people deserved to be physically attacked based solely on their professed political beliefs.

Cool. Glad you cleared that up.

He wants a shoe-horn, the kind with teeth

Oh, shut up and BIE.

Theoretically, that is Libertarian justice.

YixilTesiphon: I suspect that just as with Loughner and Giffords, this will turn out to be a crazy person, not a radical.

Depends on whether he's a liberal/minority or not. If he is, then he's just a lone crazy whose actions shouldn't be used to paint whatever demographic he belongs to. Otherwise, he's proof of the nationwide right-wing conspiracy to commit domestic terrorism against the President.

Cowen refused medical treatment, and tweeted the following shortly after the attack:

I couldn't do this. I probably wouldn't have been able to walk out of the classroom. I can't breathe when that shiat's deployed. That would be one dumb farker who could be facing a murder charge if they sprayed me.

Not all libertarians are nuts.  Besides, advocating online, while easy, doesn't really motivate people.

Pretty much, though 'vigilante justice' is acceptable seeing as how the loon was going on about making a citizen's arrest.

bearcats1983: This sounds like some weird performance art piece this guy planned

That's apparently what his students thought.

Actually, that's the opposite of libertarian justice.

Really - go do some reading on libertarianism from their sources, not the weird crap you're relying on.

Except that he claimed that he was making a citizen's arrest. I'm pretty sure that is THE definition of "vigilante justice".

I(and about 10 of my friends) was placed under "citizen's arrest" one night. Luckily it was just some crazy old dude with a flashlight and his social security card. We ignored him and went on our way. An actual assault on us would have changed things.

those onion cartoons are awesome. though i wonder if there are people who think they're real.

There's a site called Literally Unbelievable which posts FaceBook reactions to Onion articles, which are pretty funny/scary.  It also boasts a section on the worst reviews on Amazon.  Pretty entertaining.

TY. I hadn't heard of this before, but was not surprised to see so many ummm... uncritical posters. I had to walk away after a bit... because stupid was burning. But I came back and laughed some more. Mandatory classes in critical analysis in school are loooooong overdue. BTW, my favorite was the story about the liberal being upset that her conservative friend wasn't racist or homophobic, being surprised and disappointed that he had a more nuanced view on politics. That in itself made me laugh, and the predictable responses just put the relish on the dawg.

Hmm. The attacker was named Jonathan Pendleton. May be the guy who left the following comment on Cowen's blog:

What better place to do prison research than inside a prison?

If the police and FBI won't arrest you for hacking my computer and sexually harassing me over the past several months, I will do it myself-in the next couple weeks before school starts again. Either way, one of us is going to prison

I will entertain settlement offers at the email address provided.

Sincerely, Jonathan E Pendleton

Good job that ole codger did not deploy his pepper spray.

Professor is best known as a food critic. I differ w/ him on certain Chinese restaurants, but find him apolitical save in his discussions of government waste and misallocations of capital.

Dude had a stalker. That's it.

I was thinking that when I typed that last part. Best case scenario is that I would have ended up in the hospital...

Vigilant justice usually requires a previous (or ongoing) crime of some form on the part of the attacked; merely saying something that someone does not like does not constitute a crime, regardless of what the attacked screams during the attack.

The ATTACKER said that he was making a citizen's arrest, and then proceeded to spray the professor.
