(New York Daily News)   We apologise again for the fault in the security. The security guard hired to replace the security guard who was sacked for falling asleep has been sacked for falling asleep by the people who hire security guards, who have NOT been sacked   (nydailynews.com) divider line 10

Ok, I am going to weigh in on this and I know that most of you wont pay it any attention.

I provided Security Officers to almost all the major entertainment companies in the L.A. Area. I provided Officers for Universal Studios, Disney, Fox, CBS, NBC, Etc.

The problem that is happening at 1 WTC is NOT GOING TO CHANGE UNTIL CORPORATE AMERICA DECIDES TO PAY FOR PROFESSIONAL SECURITY.

Think about it, they are spending 3 BILLION dollars to build the building and paying a Security company probably a $16/hr BILLING rate for Officers. That billing rate allows for around a $9.50/hr pay rate.

I said it my entire Security management career, "you are not going to get quality Security Officers for $9.50/hr with crappy benefits".

You pay $25/hr + benefits and you will get Ex-Military, retired Cops, etc. that will take ownership in the property they are guarding.

Agreed.  This.

I wouldn't say that you won't find some quality folks for that pay, but you're absolutely gonna find better people when you pay and screen better.

Belias: Beerguy: and paying a Security company probably a $16/hr BILLING rate for Officers

Is this a guess or are you basing this statement on something specific?

That is an educated guess based upon the history of corporate security practices particularly with regard to buildings still under construction (based upon 15 years of experience).

Once the building is in operation, I have no doubt that the overall security will be managed better. Hopefully, management will provide a robust budget for building security.

Access to the building should be as tightly controlled now as it will be once occupied.

You may ask why?, so here are two examples of assassination attempts (1 successful and 1 not) where explosives were planted in an area before it was occupied.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johann_Georg_Elser - gained access to a hall (over a number of nights) where Hitler would be speaking and planted explosives in a pillar behind the podium. Unfortunately for the world, Hitler changed his speaking time and wasn't there when the bomb went off.

http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2008/07/the-assassinati/ - The assassins posed a construction workers to lay wire in pavement crossing a street. You can read the rest for yourselves.

I used to work for a huge international goods company. Their security guards at the headquarters were a joke. Most of them were overweight, old, or physically disabled. They were little more than a body in Securitas shirt. It would've taken little more than a slow jog to get passed the security desk to enter the building.

Interesting (but not surprising) that a multi billion dollar company would give security duties to the lowest bidder.

What Beerguy said.  I did similar work.  Especially on the overnight shift, you're going to get people working two jobs.  It's easier to convince the client to pay for 2x the number of people they need and hope they are smart enough to take turns sleeping.

This...

And then this from the comments on TFA:
Great. Hire a blind Muslim to guard the WTC.. Isn't this the most incredible thing you ever read?  Should be a butt of jokes on the night shows.  But its not funny.

FTA: "Basher, who suffers from a nerve condition that prevents him from opening his left eye and limits the vision of his right eye"

Sounds like a great choice for a security guard.
