No one with any means at all in NYC sends their kids to public school, and there is such a high demand for private schools that they are everywhere.

Only the poors are going to public school, and we all know who the poors are.

Southern states have been operating under forced integration rules for ages.  Seems like it worked fairly well.

2014-03-27 10:31:23 AM
What they need to do is bus white kids into those schools that are predominantly black to increase the diversity in those schools.

We could call it "Diversifying By Transportation Of Some Sort" and it will be a huge success.

2014-03-27 10:32:44 AM
Seems like with the numbers mentioned (for NYC at least) that if the benchmark is White student presence to be diverse, you will need some ...wait for it..white students

For NYC -
the study notes that many of the charter schools created over the last dozen years are among the least diverse of all, with less than 1 percent white enrollment at 73 percent of charter schools.

AND

The district is roughly 40 percent Hispanic, 30 percent black, 15 percent white and 15 percent Asian.

So it would seem that the charter schools with only 1% white may not be that far off.   Depending on neighborhoods and what the charter school may be focused on, could be a tough draw

New York state has the most segregated public schools in the nation, with many black and Latino students attending schools with virtually no white classmates, according to a report released Wednesday.

While New Orleans has a different racial diversity than most US cities, it's important to remember this is about public schools. I would love to see the racial make-up of all those suburban charter schools that are funded with publicly funded vouchers.

Meh. I suspect a huge percentage of white kids are now home-schooled.

I can only speak about where I am in california... here the separation is economic, because there is such a wide gulf beteen the haves and the have nots. Most of that is due to the cost of housing here. More white people can afford to buy houses (in total and as a percentage), so their neighborhoods are more concentrated and more wealthy. The schools in these areas reflect this, especially the private ones.

So here, unlike the south, it's about how much money the parents make and not "2-4-6-8 we don't wanna integrate!" Green is the only color of concern.

2014-03-27 10:35:17 AM
I am shocked, SHOCKED, that states that have a lot of rich people have rich neighborhoods and suburbs.

In the South almost everyone is poor so they all live together is squalor.

This is really a measurement of class division and race unfortunately follows class lines.

Not really news, look at the various lists of top ten most segregated cities.  Most people clutching their pearls at Southern racism live in lily-white suburbs in the Northeast and Midwest.

Not so much in Boston and New York, which had those same rules.

Cities so big that their minority neighborhoods not only would qualify for city status on their own, but, are bigger than most other cities?

Oh, and Detroit. (I don't think that white people live in Detroit anymore)

If only you were able to look it up.  But you wouldn't want to find anything that challenges your ideology, right?

By the most generous estimates, 21,000 kids in Louisiana are homeschooled.  Even if all those children were white, it would be 6.7% of the total white student population.

I'm from Upstate NY and racism is very prevalent.  In my daughters school there is like one or two other ethnic kids in there.  I'm still up in the air whether it's how some kids are raised or outright ignorance or a lack of ever going anyplace but our podunk town.  Glad I'm leaving this year.  F this town.  So, yeah, racism is alive and well in NY sad to say.

2014-03-27 10:47:36 AM
My ancestors didn't force black people to live and work on their land for no renumeration. So I guess I've had less opportunity to be raised close to people of color. Which as we all know makes me the real racist.

Detroit is so destitute, that even black people don't live there anymore.

\The recent outward migration has been mainly black residents leaving for the inner-ring suburbs.

The only solution a school district can do to fix this is busing of one sort or another, which tends to piss off everybody.  If neighborhoods are de facto segregated, so will neighborhood schools be.

2014-03-27 10:56:43 AM
Segregation in public schools is largely caused by segregation in neighborhoods. And when blacks were moving north in the first half of the 20th century, both local customs and federal housing law ensured that they moved into blacks-only neighborhoods. So there's some of your disparity, right there.

/The line from the pre-civil-rights days was that in the North, white people didn't care how high black people got, as long as they didn't get too close. In the South, they didn't care how close they got, as long as they didn't get too high.

What y'all need to do, see, is make sure the facilities at the schools are equivalent. Seeing as how the economic classes are "separated" if you will, the funds should be set aside to ensure that their educational materials and facilities are "equal".

Yes and 9 out of 10 students in New Orleans attend a public school that is a charter school. The New York schools discussed in the article are public schools that are charter schools.

It's almost impossible to separate a true public school from a private school that is only public because it wants public funding. Screening in these charter schools can change racial diversity and other aspects of the school.

Such as academic performance. The file photo depicts New York's Bedford Academy High School. It's website claims it has a 97 percent graduation rate. There has to be some very thorough and adept screening to prevent the kind of graduation rates that crop up in truly public schools--not private schools who can take public money and refuse services to students who will mar those schools' records.

Society is fixing it, slowly. Interracial marriage rates have more than doubled since 1980. Eventually, most Americans will consider themselves mixed-race, and then quit caring about "race," which is a pseudo-scientific relic of the 19th century, anyway. Then we can all band together to hate the truly inferior people -- Canadians.

Actually, there are twice as many white people living below the poverty line as black people.  In terms of raw numbers, as I recall, it was 18.9 million non-Hispanic whites and 10.9 million blacks as of 2012, according to the US Census bureau.

Now, blacks my have a higher proportion of their population living below the poverty line than whites, but that doesn't change the fact that there are far more poor whites than poor blacks.

Bussing does not work, because when you start bussing the families with means will pick up and leave. Local control of public schools is a failure. The only solution is to Federalize education and insure that every child is worth X amount of tax dollars to the school district. Then create Federal task forces to move into failing school districts and take them over.

Adorable. Someone from the North who thinks there ancestors didn't benefit from the slave trade because they didn't live in South. Tell me, where did your ancestors get the tobacco they smoked, the sugar they ate or the cotton they used to make fabric from? In fact, all the cotton that was shipped overseas to the UK was sent to New York before it was sent out. Do you think no one in the North benefited from that? Not a single soul? The North may not have had the slaves but they sure made the South depended on them with their demands for goods.

LOL @ the on-going battle between northern and southern white people about who is more racist. If you all listned to the black people in New York, Chicago, DC, Baltimore, Boston, etc. they could have told you that shiat. As a matter of fact, the DID tell you that shiat. But when they said it you all called it playing the race card.
