Heh, sounds like an easy way to take a cheap vacation.  I'll take a Calgary to Mexico route please.

And how do these people typically get back to their point of origin?

1. Get a return trip with somebody else's car going the other way.
2. An airline ticket.

I know some people who do this.

They just work every now and then... the guy who still does it is retired and just works when he wants to. However, he doesn't really poke about like TFA implies (stop and sightsee). He usually goes pretty straight through. He could take a detour if he wanted, but I get the feeling the schedule is tight enough that you aren't going to go 200 miles out of your way and spend a day at the Grand Canyon.

I'm not sure if it really pays well enough to bother- depending on how far it is and the cost of travel back home you could easily end up spending all you made just for your own expenses.

I did this when I was 21, moving from the midwest to the west coast.  It was a pretty great deal.  I got a few strange looks from people wondering how a guy like me could be driving a Bill Blass limited edition Mark IV Lincoln Continental, but that just made it more fun.

Also fun:  Finding an $11 motel room that was clean and quiet.

Brad probably loaned the car to the Pope. Don't let the hat fool you, Man, the Pope's a crazy farker. He probably blessed the car, got wasted and drove it off a farking cliff...

Some of them are going one way themselves.
