Damn, but those were great times. The Avs/Wings rivalry was one of the greatest.

I was a Wings fan who used to wear his Yzerman jersey to the games at the Pepsi center while he lived in Colorado. The fans were all cool as most hockey fans in Denver rooted for an original six team as nobody in Denver was really from there.

Hockey back then was played the way the Bad Boys played basketball. No farkin prisoners.

Loved that rivalry. Many a detention was earned sleeping in class do to late night hockey.

/Totally worth it.

I remember watching that game screaming my head off and waking up my then-girlfriend (who had to be up at 5am).  She came down and watched the rest of the game.  Great rivalry.  Ironically, it wouldn't have been such a heated rivalry without Lemieux.  He was easily hateable (as was Patrick Roy).  It's hard to hate on Joe Sakic and Peter Forsberg.

Ah, that was fun shiat.

My friend was a Wings fan and I vividly remember those games.

This right here; those games were true blood feuds.  When ESPN actually gave a shiat about hockey they always wanted to have this game on nationwide.

The punches exchanged between Roy and Vernon is some of the best dirty boxing that I have ever seen.

Extra bonus: Fight started when Igor Larionov and Peter Forsberg, of  all people got into an altercation. McCarty jumped Lemieux while  officials were trying to prevent Larionov from being crushed to death by Forsberg.

I can't believe it's been 17 years. Now I feel old.

I remember watching that as a wings fan just awestruck on what was going on. Especially when the goalies starting fighting.

That was a true and genuine rivalry. I'll never forget Roy getting lit up for 7 goals in the playoffs. His "statue of liberty" play.

Fun times.

Most Avs fans think McCarty is the devil but I couldn't stand Marty freaking LaPointe.  He was a true d-bag.  He'd yip and yap and stick poke people in the groin and face but would rarely drop the gloves.  I had a healthy respect for McCarty because I knew that Claude was our d-bag.  But damn, when the playoffs rolled around Claude would just kill it with timely goals.

I can't think of two teams in any sport that hated each other more than these two.

You had some first rate captains on both sides in Sakic and Yzerman. You couldnt ask for better.

And then there's guys like Claude Lemieux and Kirk Maltby.

Not a big Roy fan but him landing that flying tackle so McCarty could continue pounding on Lemieux was awesome.

One thing that always annoyed me about the Lemieux/McCarty turtling refrain is that the Wings fans take it completely out of context. Even the video conveniently skips the most important part of that particular match-up, which was that McCarty freight-trained Lemieux from behind and started punching him before he even knew what happened. Yes, Lemieux was a coont, but McCarty was a biatch.

They squared up in realfights in that series a couple other times, and they were pretty even. McCarty wasn't this badass who beat Claude Lemieux down, he was a scumbag who took him out from behind with a series of sucker punches.

Lastly, yes I know that Lemieux started the whole thing when he almost killed Kris Draper, and that's why he was a coont, but McCarty is no hero.

A little context here.  After the Draper hit Kris was sent to the hospital where he had to have his jaw wired shut.  McCarty was his roommate at the time and was sent with him.  Before they left the doctor gave McCarty a pair of pliers and explained to him that because of the concussion Draper could start vomiting uncontrollably at any time, even in his sleep.  If that happened McCarty would have to undo the wiring and clear Drapers airway so he didn't choke to death.  Darren stayed up all night, pliers in hand, his teammates life potentially in them.  Roll that around in your head for a few minutes.

Wasn't he in the hospital?  Don't they have people trained to do this that do not have fat hockey fingers? Nurses I think they are called?

Yeah, that's nonsense. Draper was in the hospital for the concussion and reconstructive surgery, and none of your scenario above happened. It's a Detroit fans urban legend. ALL THAT ASIDE, I don't disagree that McCarty should have been pissed that his buddy got nailed like that. Lemieux was a dirty player who was a douche for sure. As was McCarty. My issue is that Wings fans make it out to be some romantic story of sweet revenge, illustrating how brave and loyal McCarty is, and how much of a coward Claude Lemieux was. I mean, just look at how he turtled like a biatch!!

But, sadly for the Wings fans, that wasn't the reality. McCarty hit Lemieux from behind and started punching him. That wasn't sweet revenge, that was a biatch move by McCarty. And when they squared off for real a couple times subsequent to that, it was at worst a draw both times, if not Lemieux getting the better of the fights. After the second one, McCarty skated off the ice almost crying because he knew deep in his little heart that he would never be able to properly avenge the hit his friend took, because he just wasn't as tough as Claude Lemieux. And that, boys and girls, is the real story behind the feud between Claude Lemieux and Darren McCarty.

Agree completely. Respect to the Wings for standing up for their teammate and winning that game. But the turtle talk is BS, McCarty started the fight with a sucker punch.

I f'd that up proper. Meant to say I see this was covered...yeah Claude was a dick but in this case he was suckerpunched and pinned.

He was an asset to the teams he played on, too. 1995, 2000 Devils would agree.

That story sounds exaggerated.

Somebody has their jaw wired shut and is likely to start vomiting and choke on it due to recent operation unless his questionably qualified friend cuts the wiring. Sounds like a medical malpractice suit waiting to happen to me.

It wasn't an operation, it was the concussion he suffered from getting slammed headfirst into the boards.

McCarty turned into a drunken alcoholic gambler and Lemieux started a successful business.

Lemieux was a playoff legend. McCarty scored one memorable goal in the final game.

Guess who wins in life? Lemieux.

The facial reconstruction counts as an operation, I believe.Concussion was obviously also a factor but my point is if he' in that kind of jeopardy, why release him from hospital?

In the business of entertainment media, they don't call it lying, they call it "punching up the story". But yes, he fabricated that little tidbit in order to add fuel to the fire. Don't forget, for about 5 years, the Red Wings/Avs was a ratings monster for the NHL. Did you miss a single one of those games? I sure didn't. I live in northern california now, and if I wear my Avs jersey in public, I'll always get a "WINGS SUCK" or "GO WINGS" yelled at me...17 years later. It's insane. I think that may have been one of the top 5 sports rivalries of all time.

McLean is one of the most respected sports telecasters in Canada.  I have a hard time believing he needs to "punch up" a story.
