My thought exactly - although I had too see if there were pics.

So what if she breastfed while drinking that little...

Ethanol is naturally occuring in fermented fruit, and is something we've adapted to deal with - smoking tobacco isn't natural.
So in my eyes it would be a lot worse if she had been smoking and breastfeeding at the same time.

/Tobacco smoke causes ear infections in kids, among other things.

Oh, Jesucristo. Can we use a touch of common sense?

Let's say the mom here got absolutely hammered. Slamming down drinks and shots until she couldn't walk. If her BAC was, say, 0.38, she'd be beyond three sheets to the wind. She'd be sailing towards Blackout Island.

And her breast milk would be about as alcoholic as orange juice.

2 beers ain't gonna hurt the kid.

When Mrs schnee and I realized that that schnee jr. was on the way, we also realized that in between conception and knowing, many glasses of wine had been drunk. Like any normal first time parents, we freaked out and asked our pre-natal pediatrician. He said that since he is in America, he has to say what the AMA says (drinking while preggers is bad). He also said that in his native Spain, if they told Spanish women that they couldn't have a glass of wine while pregnant or breast feeding, there'd short be no more Spaniards.

Unless there are obvious signs of abuse, we should mind our own business. There is far too much spying on everyone else to make sure they tow the line (whatever our particular line might be). What if child protection services had gotten involved. That child might have been kept from the "bad influence" of a loving family for months or even years. That is far more damaging than a little alcohol leaked into breast milk.

People are really pushy when it comes to pregnancy and kids.  My son is due any day now, and some of the situations my wife has described to me about interactions with strangers while she was pregnant, are quite strange.  You wouldn't believe how many people directly asked if it was planned.  Really?!?  It's none of your god dam business.  Or how many people go directly from looking at her stomach, then to her left hand.  Or how she got chastised in the super market for buying a twelve pack of beer, which was for me of course.  When it comes to kids, i think people are more rude and feel even more entitled than when it comes to people smoking.

You have a really shiatty pediatrician, since I'm not even a doctor and I know offhand that the bulk of the complex neural development occurs in the second and third trimesters, so probably if you stopped drinking excessively once you realized the pregnancy was going on you're fine.

And also that the primary study the policy you're referring to is based on found no result below 14 drinks a week and recommends a limit of one serving in a day as a dosage limit, not zero servings.

// Once the kid is born, you have to be pretty soused to fark 'em up with your breast milk; babies are very chemical-resistant and rubbing whiskey on their gums used to be a standard anagesic for infants.  I imagine the concern here was probably neglect and not biochemistry.

abhorrent1: Stupid finger waggers. Mind your own damn business

I'll give the dissenting opinion on this one.

If you think you're seeing a child being abused, speaking up and referring it to the police is entirely the appropriate and correct thing to do.  Going after them yourself is wrong, and making up shiat to tell the cops is wrong, but if you  genuinely think you may be seeing child abuse and you call the cops and tell them  only what you've personally witnessed, then that's just your basic duty as a non-horrible human being.

The waitress was in the right, the failure here was on the cops for not investigating and knowing the appropriate laws.  Honestly, what's  supposed to happen in this situation is that the policeman or clerk you talk to when you call it in should know the law and should be able to tell you whether or not the situation is an actual crime (it isn't, in this case) without even wasting time sending anyone out.

// This is actually basically what the mother said, the first bit anyhow.  "If the girl thought my kid was in danger I'm glad she spoke up", something to that effect.

I was gonna say this, but I'm hungover and slow.

A little beer is helpful for breastfeeding mothers.

But, if that booking photo is legit, she does look like she might have getting lit. It also looks like she had spent a couple hours crying because if her predicament, so its difficult to tell what's going on.

Another case of cops being idiots. Unless soemthing is left out then the cops had no case for child endangerment.

Actually, unless she's schwasted, her breast milk is, by law, if under .5%, non-alcoholic.

2014-03-27 08:07:20 AM
Alcohol consumption during nursing may decrease letdown, and alcohol levels in breastmilk mirror blood levels. We (pediatricians) recommend pumping and dumping since alcohol can cause agitation in the infant. Beer may be beneficial, but not because of the alcohol, but the polysaccharides may increase prolactin levels. So drink non-alcoholic beer.

I say throw her in the slammer cause she made the Daily Fail.

Pretty much that--the dose makes the poison.

Not that you should drink, smoke, or use/abuse other drugs when you're pregnant or breastfeeding (at least if the drug can cross the placenta or be secreted in milk), but the mother's body still accounts for the majority of the volume of drug distribution (and, unless she's taking the alcohol i.v. or rectally--in which case I think there are other, bigger issues to be addressed--there's still first pass metabolism that'll deal with a fair portion of a beer or two).

So, we're talking around .08 BMAC for a legally intoxicated mother?  That's... around 1/60th the alcohol content in a regular beer (say 5%), and 1/6 of the alcohol in a non-alcoholic beer...so basically nothing.

Even a completely wasted person with a .5 BAC would have the breast milk alcohol content equivalent of a non-alcoholic beer.  Not that I would recommend feeding non-alcoholic beer to an infant.

I was in a bar one time to see this crappy band.  Back when you could smoke inside.  It was loud enough that I wore earplugs to preserve my hearing. At about 11 oclock my wife looked over through the smoke and there was a lady breasfeeding a 6 or 7 month old baby.  She asked her if she thought it was a little late/loud/smoky/drunk etc. to have a baby in at the bar (as if there was ever a good time)  She started screaming at her yelling that she was the frontman's wife and she does this everynight, none of our GD business.

So I went out and called the cops who shrugged and redirected me to child protective services who said they couldn't do anything unless the baby was in distress (examples not breathing, dying, dead etc.)

I was told that kid went on to be the mayor of a big town i canada or something.  (95% of this story was true)
