Radicalism is a plague that needs to be eradicated.

Unless it's 80's skateboarding radicalism, in which case it should be looked up on wistfully.

RevCarter: Ok, so, not to defend the Taliban on this front, but although there had been several previous fatwas suggesting that the stone Buddhas should be destroyed, the Taliban leadership had made it clear that they didn't feel that was a useful course of action

until

A big NGO said they were going to spend several million dollars to restore the Buddhas...at which point the Taliban said, "Afghanistan is poor and has many serious problems. If you have millions of dollars to spend in Afghanistan please spend them on health and nutrition instead."

The NGO said, "we spend our money the way we want to."

At that point Mullah Omar told the Taliban, "I think you guys need some rappelling and demolitions practice."

And thus...history...

And I bet the NGO went, "Ok, you got us" and gave the money to the poor.  Or what the Taliban defined as "poor", which would have been their Madrassas.

phrawgh: It's not that big of a deal. It might be the only good thing they have done. Destroying false idols is good for all of us.

Not sure if you be trollin, but destroying false idols calls their falseness into question. If they are powerless, leave them be.

Those two Buddhas were destroyed because of their power, if only the power of another perspective.
