Bad idea.

It is indeed time to publicly admit that the public system is not preparing students for jobs, much less life. But sending them all to college to make up for it won't work either.

What better way to keep young people out of the job market? This is in the same vein of tactics as has been used since the beginning of child labor laws to increase available jobs for 'adults'.

It does feel like grad school was a waste, but I'm satisfied with my undergrad studies.

2014-03-26 08:43:44 PM
Well, if you want to make college degrees completely useless, this is a great way to do it.

2014-03-26 08:48:32 PM
The unemployment rate is just 3.4% for college grads, while it's 6.4% for high-school grads with no college and 9.8% for high school dropouts.

So, I didn't read the whole thing yet, but are they suggesting that if everybody goes to college, the unemployment rate will drop to 3.4% overall because everybody will be a college graduate?

I'm pretty sure Morbo might have something to say about that....

Yahoo Finance. Which probably means the bubble is about to burst on college debt, this is the final pump and dump before it all comes crashing down.

Which is also good because we can saturate the markets (on paper) and pay every new professional 10 dollars an hour.  Supply and demand, yo.  Why would you expect anything different?  However, I am all for highly subsidized college and trade schools available (not mandatory) to everyone.

Terrible idea, but there most definitely is a student loan crisis in the country.  Needs to be able to be discharged in bankruptcy like it was up until, what 98 or so?

And if this scheme goes through and someone figures out how to underwrite it, we can be sure to read another thought piece that, no longer is a college degree sufficient to ensure a long, prosperous life in America, so why don't we consider making postgraduate degrees mandatory for everyone.  The idea being that we'll end up with the best educated populace in the world (something I sort of believe won't happen).

Were the thinkers who came up with this idea from the American Association for Full Employment for University Professors?

Nah. I think we need to package these loans together into CDOs and CDSes. Hey Moody's, here's a billion dollars, these history majors with 200,000 in loans look like AAA debts. DONT THEY? HERES SOME MORE SHUT UP MONEY.

They all provide free post-secondary educations. So clearly it's an absurd idea that would never work.

Summoning a Heinlein grumble.

Upon finding that people with a bachelors instead of a high school diplomal made significantly more over their life, they decided to make the high school diploma a "bachelors of life skills".

What are they gonna do, pass an Affordable College Act and fine people who don't have a college degree after the age of 25? So then everyone can pay a few thousand dollars to get their degree from Universities run by lobbyists that are quickly accredited by the very same act?

Considering that all those countries are tiny (except for maybe Russia), I would assume the "free post-secondary education" theme wouldn't scale up well to a country the size of the USA.

For similar reasons that Norway has public schools with marble floors.

This About That: It is indeed time to publicly admit that the public system is not preparing students for jobs, much less life. But sending them all to college to make up for it won't work either.

Was that ever the purpose, or did businesses decide that training for jobs was a waste of money and threw that responsibility onto colleges?  All of this sounds like lazy businesses not wanting to hire people to set up training on the cheap for people instead of being institutions of higher learning.

Businesses need to start training their own people and not throwing it off to someone else.

So a car mechanic does need college?  This is the dumbest shiat to ever appear on Fark.  College is good for some things, but we still need skilled trades (which are learned on the job, not by books).  Is this really that hard for people to understand?

2014-03-26 11:29:31 PM
Why not?

College is just what High School was back when I was a kid.

With all the testing they are doing on kids now, by the time a kid reaches grad school, he should have a high school education!

I think 'compulsory' is the operative word from the proposal. When something is mandatory, it has to be tooled for the lowest common denominator. None of those countries require post-secondary educations.

Bathia_Mapes: That's got to be the stupidest thing I've read in a long time.

Mandating education beyond 18 isn't the worst idea, but having it be in our current University system most certainly is.  18 needs to be the time for many people really start specializing as in something closer to an apprenticeship than undergraduate studies.

2014-03-26 11:32:56 PM
Seems like a reasonable idea to me. Offer the poor kids a tax deduction to help subsidize the cost, and be sure to offer large quantities of loans to help students pay the sky rocketing cost of it.  This way, we can all be engineers, doctors, and college professors whose effective take home income after paying for the loans is roughly the same as a retail worker's net income.  And then, hopefully we can make it so difficult to obtain any kind of debt relief that we drive multitudes of our best educated to leave the USA and move to a first world country where they mysteriously are able to benefit from their hard work and skill set in useless ways like owning a home, having affordable healthcare, and being able to take time off work to go on pointless "holidays" or "vacations".

It's impossible to say from my vantage point, here amongst the 99%, but It surely looks like the powers-that-be decided they needed a cheap labor force more than they needed an educated, and therefore troublesome, citizenry. Thus the system is failing us, but working just as intended for them.
