"It's appropriation and commodification of Asian culture," she told us. "It's really sacrilegious to put Buddha statues in a dance lounge."

But yet they're fine in nail salons?

"Happy Ending" Billboard Near LAX Offends Some Asian Americans

I assure you that's nowhere near the first happy ending near LAX.

it is a Las Vegas nightclub and this ad isn't new by any stretch of the imagination.

2014-03-26 02:24:49 PM
oh and that club has been open since 2010 (at least)... and the last time I was there it was filled with Asians, so I am not sure how many people are really irritated with the ad? There were hundreds of people lined up to get in the club and probably 50-100 to get in the restaurant side of TAO.

But it ain't too goddamned beaucoup.

Absolutely - kind of like a Redskin game where there are tens of thousands of people lined up to get into the game, including Native American fans.

Glad we could resolve both issues in one thread.

Asian bistro and nightclub?  Is that anything like an Ethiopian trattoria and pub, or is it more like a Mexican izakaya and hookah bar?

Lu says she's disappointed that, after tweeting her concerns at them, she had received no response from the venue or its home, the Venetian Resort Hotel Casino, which is owned by outspoken Republican billionaire Sheldon Adelson.

Someone no one knows sent a tweet and it didn't get an official response? OH THE OUTRAGE!

It's still acceptable to sexually objectify women, as long as that objectification doesn't include obvious markers of a particular ethnic subculture.

I'm somewhat surprised that anyone would be shocked by this.  Every culture from the outside is appropriated and commodified (whatever that means).  We appropriate and market our own subcultures.

Personally, I love it when Japan in particular appropriates Western culture.  They're so awesome at it.

If you're saying that it's still acceptable to sexually objectify white women, it's probably because it's being done by white men.

Yeah this. It's not a bordello, or even a strip club. Promising a happy ending when literally none are guaranteed by the business itself is the most blatant false advertisement since The Neverending Story.

Meh. Sexual Objectification is the worst type of manufactured outrage maybe ever. It happens to pretty much anyone who is moderately attractive. So what? Just because I want to fark you does not automatically mean I don't value any other contributions to society you can make.

American culture is essentially defined by its self-commoditization and sponge-like appropriation of other cultures so I'm offended that someone would tell me I can't repackage a foreign culture in a tidy consumer-friendly package for resale.

Good to know we should FINALLY be outraged about racism against Asians.
