(Daily Mail)   Teacher posts condolences after student commits suicide. Just kidding, his FB rant calling the kid a "bully who made life hell for others" gets an entire community outraged. What a Cox   (dailymail.co.uk) divider line 86

That was pretty classless.  If the kid was a little prick, maybe he should have kept his flap shut.  At least he was honest.

Just because the kid committed suicide doesn't mean that the teacher was wrong. With that said...dick move, dude.

It's a hard place to be. The kid was probably being called an angel and all sorts of wonderful praise.  Now you know this kid was a miserable little twit his whole short life. The proper thing to do is, of course, to let it go.  But I can understand the desire to set the record straight.

I want to hear what the other students had to say. Teenagers don't have empathy or tact yet. They'll be brutally honest.

That will determine my opinion on the matter beyond "Even if it's true, you don't say it Mr Cox."

A teen committing suicide is a tragedy, and the teacher should either have said something nice or said nothing. Even if the only reason was that they don't want to jeopardize their job.

But....

I don't have a huge problem with people speaking the truth about someone who has died. Pretty much all the time,  people
say nice things, even if the deceased was a huge asshole.

I think you're all losing sight of the truly horrible part of this story, which is that the teacher misused the word "your."

Headmaster: Quite frankly, Mr Perkins, if he wasn't dead, I'd have him expelled.
Mr Perkins: I beg your pardon?
Headmaster: Yes, EXPELLED! If I wasn't making allowances for the fact that your son is dead, he'd be out on his ear!

Maybe if the kid had been confronted about the bullying while he was alive, and the root cause identified and addressed, he wouldn't have killed himself.  Obviously there was something wrong, there.  Pretending there wasn't and pretending he was god's little angel on earth wont help any other kids on the same train heading toward that brick wall.

Most people did not have nice words when WBC Phelps bought the farm, myself included. Maybe we are required to give kids special treatment.

2014-03-26 01:49:09 PM
So why did the kid kill himself? That might give some insight into what his life was actually like.

2014-03-26 01:49:42 PM
On the one hand, I think of all the Fred Phelps tributes that went the classy route. On the other, you have a little bastard who spared future victims from his bullying by offing himself

I'd piss on his grave without incident and call it even.

2014-03-26 01:51:11 PM
Okay, we get it.  The kid was a bully and not nice to the other kids.

But as a teacher, and an authority figure, you have to have more tact when speaking about the situation.

He may have been right.  But it was still a dick move.

Some Bass Playing Guy: A teen committing suicide is a tragedy,

No not always. In fact sometimes it is an improvement.

Still a bit crass to publicly state such about a specific one.

You think maybe the kid was a bully and moody and a dick to other kids because he was depressed? Depression in young men often manifests as aggression. Anyone ever think about that?

Obviously, not in time to save him.

2014-03-26 02:00:00 PM
There's no upside to this kind of thing IMHO. Say something nice or hush up and move on. You're alive, he's dead. You've already won the war by a landslide.

That's highly inappropriate.

Probably accurate, but sometimes you have to know when to keep your mouth shut.

2014-03-26 02:03:50 PM
The truth is out of style.  Still the teacher should have just cracked a beer and smiled to himself knowing the little shiat will no longer be a problem.

His acting out was a call for attention certainly. However, he was continuing the behavior, so either he was being coddled or outright ignored when he wasn't misbehaving. So, first, he wasn't going to be any different as an adult, and second, both his misbehavior and suicide were his family's fault. The kid doesn't know what the teacher had to say, so no harm to him. Only the parents are hurt by it, and fark them.

Gone are the days when you weren't allowed to ever say anything negative about someone who died. Sounds like this kid was a douchebag and I commend the teacher for being honest and not hiding his true feelings. There are people that are better off dead.

Except it sounds like his parents were told there were problems and lived in a state of denial rather than admitting their kid might be a bit of a bully or have something wrong with him.

2014-03-26 02:13:11 PM
The kid was obviously messed up to have gotten to the point of suicide. But I blame his parents for either not addressing it or, more likely, being the root cause (i.e., they'd beat the kid and the kid, in turn, took his frustrations out on others).

2014-03-26 02:13:54 PM
Or maybe the teacher killed him.

THIS!

I wonder how many of the "the teacher is a dick" crowd chimed in to give Phelps a nice eulogy. Or, perhaps, it's okay to say mean things about dead people so long as you are doing so under the cloak of interweb-annonyminity?

I've met a handful of people in my lifetime that will get no sympathy from me if they died. The fact that he was a child seem irrelevant. If you spend your life making other people miserable you deserve what you get.

Also concerning are the numerous grammar mistakes in the teacher's rant. This sets a bad example for the kids.

Nonsense.  His parents thought he was special, therefor he clearly wasn't a bully.  Parents, especially grieving ones, can always be depended on to be aware of and unbiased about their kids.

Likely, the teacher's comments were spot on.  The FB post was really stupid, which, in my mind, makes it MORE likely to be true.  It's the kind of dumbass reactionary move that evidences lack of thought (and therefore more likely to be genuine).

I don't care all that much about the teacher's opinion about a bully, but damnit you're a teacher, use proper grammar.

And? Who cares *why* he was a bully? fark him. If you take your depression out on other people, the ol' sympathy meter goes to zero. fark this kid who made life hell for other kids, and fark anyone who tries to find reasons to defend them. It doesn't matter one damn bit why the kid was a piece of shiat. Everyone else is better off now.

A guy I went to high school with, in the early 90s, died last year.  I had no fond memories of this fellow and a part of me thought "Good" before the rest of me kicked in with, "but his poor wife and kids."  In our little high school fb group everyone was talking about how great of a guy he was which was nothing like what I remembered of him.  I kept my mouth shut.

I bet the kid bullied the teacher. Made fun of his soul patch and the fact he looks like a total smarmy douche.
