The kid has a variety of interests and doesn't care that "only boys can do that"? There's one little girl who'll be a productive member of society, and  thus one more powerful person who the fundies will not have support from.
How about you start shooting your other foot now, Church.

lilplatinum: Meh, its a private school.  What do you expect if you send your children to some fundamentalist baptist farktard training camp.

About 20 minutes east of where I live it's gets rural as fark. The options for parents are reeaaaally shiatty public schools, or decent private, Christian schools. The people I know that live in that area hate having to send their kids to a religious school, but I they want their snowflake to get a decent education, it's the lesser of two evils.

Or they buy/rent a trailer/apartment/condo in the town I live in and send them to one of the best school systems* in the state. Too bad that option isn't very viable for most people in rural areas.

/*At least it was until the suburbanites threw a fit over consolidating with Memphis City Schools and decided to break away and form their own school district. Still waiting to see how it's going to turn out.
//Whitey in the suburb don't want their precious snowflakes to go to school with those, what's the code word these days? Poors? Inner city thugs?

This girl is being taught to express herself however she wishes, rather than what a fictional book instructs.  They're not wrong, TCS is definitely not the best place for her future education.

Yeah. That's what I think every time something like this comes up: "Why would you want to continue sending your kid there? They saved you the trouble of finding out they are human shiat AFTER you've already wasted a lot of time there."

I assume they want her to have a Christian education and there aren't many or any other options in the area?

I didn't see that in the article, but if that is the case, good for her grandparent.  However, I was more expecting to read the family is trying to pray away the evil, since it is a fundamentalist private school.

This little one has so much going on at 8... her grandparents adopted her, she's questioning her gender identity and seeing a counselor and being told that if she doesn't conform she has to go. She cries everyday to be reunited with her friends.

She must be feeling so overwhelmed and isolated, if there was a candidate for the Trevor Project, I think it's Sunnie.

I hope she comes through this and is stronger than she was before.

Father, our God, Jesus Christ, makes no distinction by age. That is why we have SUNDAY SCHOOL!

This girl is going down the wrong path and any real CHRISTIAN with MORALS can see it a mile away. If she cannot, and her parents will not, take responsibility for her IMMORTAL SOUL and she wants to go to HELL - (as good Christians) we are not to judge. But in The Christian Republic of America, under the FIRST and SECOND Amendment, we don't have to allow her to drag OUR children to HELL!!!!

If this was a public school, I'd side with the family but it's a private school so I side with the private school even though I am not religious and think their rules are silly, it is still their right to set their own silly rules. The family knew the rules when they signed her up.
There's a bit more information in this article:
http://globalnews.ca/news/1231597/religious-school-tells-tomboy-to-d re ss-like-a-girl/

I am getting tired of news articles where reporters aren't asking the obvious questions.
Why is she seeing professional counseling for identity/image issues at age 8? I don't think the grandparents are telling the whole story - that doesn't sound like the kid is just a tomboy. I was a tomboy as a kid, actually even now as an adult I often enjoy tomboy stuff more than girly stuff but I do love to go for facials, manicures, pedicures and wearing skirts in nice weather - cooler than pants.
Why did her grandparents have to adopt her - what happened to her parents?

Obviously you've done some independent research as this wasn't in TFA.

I'm going to take the road the ITGs usually take about HOAs here:

They signed the paperwork accepting the school's policies on issues such as dress and behavior before they were allowed to enroll the child in the school.  If what her guardians have allowed her to do (and it is their decision because she is 8) is in violation of the school's published policies, then the school had the right to take action.

BTW, the school didn't kick her out.  They sent a letter stating what they expected of her in order for her to remain enrolled.  Her guardians removed her from the school and then went to the Farking press to drum up support, thus enraging the ZOMGtheChristianRIghtisBad crowd. They've even said they don't want to send her back to the school, so they are just stirring up trouble. The responses here are proof that you fell for it.  Congratulations, you are sheeple.

As a "tomboy" girl that went to a Christian private school all throughout my elementary years.. this was never an issue. In fact, most of the other girls wore the boy'd uniform as well, since it was more comfortable and made playing easier. This school is just an outlier.

But the school is either a) horribly misinterpreting their religion so they shouldn't consider it the "right" form of Christianity or b) correctly interpreting their religion so that god himself is basically saying "get out of this school". Either way, even as religious nuts they shouldn't even want to send their kid there.

What's the problem here? The girl will be better off in a non religious school. Kids move away from friends all the time and get over it. In the long term getting out of that environment will be much better for her. Staying there will cause far more issues down the road.

A child who doesn't conform to their idea of proper gender roles is a problem for them, ideologically. So the child must be shunned.

However,  all the other "sumptuary laws" of Deuteronomy are pretty widely ignored (to say nothing of how fluid those definitions of appropriate dress for various genders have been across time and cultures).    and the Christian Fundie explanation for why they pick and choose which parts of  Deuteronomy to follow (seeing as how the whole thing is supposed to be "inerrant") is that somehow a weird acid trip Peter had in Acts means that all the old Jewish laws are repealed unless they can find a bible passage in the New testament basically "re-upping" them, (so the whole God hates gays things is okay because Paul mentions it while condemning the basic sexual immorality of Nero's court).  I bet they can't find any anti-cross-dressing bits in the NT

"We believe that unless Sunnie as well as her family clearly understand that God has made her female and her dress and behavior need to follow suit with her God-ordained indentity, that TCS is not the best place for her future education."

School administrators told ABC 27 they have not accused Sunnie of any wrongdoing and simply want the family to follow all guidelines set for students.

So they're literally absolving any responsibility here.

"Hey don't blame us, blame God."

God's always such a scapegoat.
