Headline for tomorrow: Facebook buys Minecraft for THREE billion dollars.

Facebook is not a company of grass-roots tech enthusiasts. Facebook is not a game tech company. Facebook has a history of caring about building user numbers, and nothing but building user numbers. People have made games for Facebook platforms before, and while it worked great for a while, they were stuck in a very unfortunate position when Facebook eventually changed the platform to better fit the social experience they were trying to build.

Yea, this is pretty much how I feel about it. Facebook don't care about gaming. Facebook only cares about Facebook and how to get more users on Facebook.

Then they go and make facebook harder to use and uglier with each upgrade.  I'm still not over it

Was he in talks or was there a deal?

I'm not crazy about FB, but this sounds like reactionary whining.

Thinking social media is lame (especially with how Facebook has been implemented) and techy business men looking after their product counts as "nerd rage" now. TMYK

According to the article, it was just in talks over the last two weeks.

I don't see this and think hero though, he disagrees with the direction and wants to keep it focused more towards gaming specific platforms.  Which is odd since the specific version of Minecraft in discussion is available on devices I would consider not grassroots game friendly and not gaming focused.

Then again I completely understand:
And I did not chip in ten grand to seed a first investment round to build value for a Facebook acquisition.

As far as I know he hadn't done anything towards integrating the Rift.  The community did though, Minecrift came out awhile ago and works pretty well.

Honestly I don't think that the Facebook deal is great for Oculus long-term (unless they stay hands off like currently promised, with optional integration and open hardware).  However for pushing VR forward then having that Facebook capital* makes sense as it lets them get better and cheaper hardware out sooner.  Show that there's a market and eventually you'll have more competitors jumping in with their own versions - someday you'll have your pick of a Sony HMD, or a Razer, or Logitech, etc...

I don't think this has anything to do with Facebook trying to insert itself into the Oculus Rift at all. They know their core business is a timebomb, so they're diversifying into tech companies so they can stay afloat in the future.

This is interesting to me. It almost would have been better if EA had bought them, EA execs may hate games and EA's corp culture may demolish game studios and franchises, but they at least make games. Hell, EA could have used it to turn around some of that reputation they've earned.

Facebook is ubiquitous but has a history of pissing off both devs and users, and competing with Google and the NSA on collecting personal information. Getting bought out is kind of the goal of tech startups but because of who bought it, I'm suddenly much less excited and optimistic about the Rift.

Time will tell, maybe it will all work out. Maybe Sony will beat to market and actually support other platforms for once.

It doesn't really matter if the Facebook Rift is released with Facebook branded marketing software and bullshiat social apps.... it's just software.  It will only be a matter of weeks before someone jailbreaks it.

We will eventually be able to play Minecraft in VR on the Rift or any of the other VR sets that every major consumer electronics company is desperately working on right now, no matter what Zuckerberg and Notch want.

Because they're tremendous self-hating nerds, who can't acknowledge their own tremendous lack of social graces.  (And he smells awful).

You sure about that?  If the above picture isn't the stereotype of the aforementioned I don't know what is...

(shrug) You can already play Minecraft on the Rift using the user developed tools available on the OR forum.

Yup, facebook owning this hardware instantly soured my interest.  So, do I grab the v2 devkit one that's coming out in a few months and hope that it doesn't get tainted badly by facebook or do I just throw in the towel and wait for another company with higher integrity to make one?

You would have to be incredibly stupid to actually do that.  Think of the good you could do by giving that money away etc.  Hell start up another game of that type but with blackjack and hookers and shiat!

Ouch.
A game company that's not all over vr just seems odd to begin with tho.
Especially if you're making exploration style stuff.

I think the Facebook-oculus situation is too early to tell.
Facebook wants to be popular and powerful. It wants to secure its share of the future.
Oculus is all about the future of gaming... Which leaves a big void for all the non gaming uses. It could be doing a lot more, but funds are limited.

Fact remains there is no venture capitalist, kick starter, or ipo that's going to give you two billion dollars and the freedom to dick around for another year tweaking this thing.
So I'm cautiously optimistic its going to work out for the better. Much as I dislike Facebook.

This, actually. Most spam starts out slow while the nigerians figure out what works and doesn't. "Whats App" virus zip emails came on like a tornado, just kinda out of the blue.

Agreed. I've gotten to try the beta and I genuinely believed it had major potential, but if Zuckerberg is getting involved? Aw hell no. Not going anywhere near the retail version when it comes out.
