Truly a dark day. The appeal of virtual reality is that it's not real.
I don't want to see virtual lunches. I don't want a virtual tour of some reality TV gossip shiat.
I want to get away from the culture and society I've come to loathe so much.

I do, however, approve of naive girls uploading 3D nudes to impress a boy at school.

Here's the thing that must sting.

Everybody that gave hundreds or thousands of dollars because they believed in the Oculus Kickstarter? Yeah, they "invested" in the company, but had no equity. They basically funded a Facebook acquisition.

We believe sucking dick will be heavily defined by my sucking lots and lots of dick. It is a transformative and disruptive technology, that enables the world to experience lots of me sucking dick, and it's only just the beginning of how much dick I will suck. Also I'm a douchebag sellout."

When pressed for clarification from a mob of crying gamers, he said "I'd just like to thank the good folks at a16z for the $75M Series B last quarter; the cash balance for possible manufacturing use as well as the implied valuation of the organization put us into the range where we could credibly play Google and Facebook off against each other to provide a fantastic exit for everybody, including the good folk at Spark and Matrix who got in with their $16M Series A. And I'd like to thank most of all the suckers we got to Kickstart us with the first $2.4M that got us the credibility we needed to get the Series A in the first place. You have our... thanks. That's all you get. Our thanks. So, umm... Thanks! I also note that our CTO has just made John Romero his biatch. Again. Finally, I conclude with this thought: that nobody ever sells out their dream unless it's for a shiatload of money. I'd be remiss in my duty as CEO if I didn't remind our Series A and Series B partners that although $2B is still representable as a 32-bit integer, it nevertheless qualifies as a shiatload of money."

it will be a good reason to buy a PS4 for me... but it will only be a place-holder until the next-next-gen or the OR is released.

the PS4 simply cant handle the processing required for a high quality VR experience.. it will be interesting enough though

From Endgadget:

Update: We're on the call now, and Mark Zuckerberg is already pointing out Facebook's acquisition of Instagram as an example of how the company is getting experience buying properties and allowing them to continue to operate independently. Zuckerberg called out virtual reality as one of the computing platforms of the future -- following desktops and mobile -- and yes, talked about building Facebook's advertising into it. Specifically, he talked about the potential of a virtual communication network, buying virtual goods, and down the line, advertising.

I guess Sony is the new hope, however weak the hope may be. It's a huge soulless corporation, but it's still Japanese. Although I worry about licensing and PC usage.

People seemed to like the demos alright, and its not like sony hasn't been experimenting with VR for years now.  It shouldn't have much issue running the needed games at 1080p.

But yeah, this is a major blow to the rift for me.  I don't trust facebook, nor what they will do to the company.

They ran a kickstarter that was wildly sucessful, got 2 injections of VC, and then sold the dead end tech to a moron like Zuckerberg, because he has a history of buying worthless crap.

For VR to work properly, it needs to render both eyes independently... So two sets of 1080, or 120 frames per second.

I remember 4channers being really excited about the oculus rift and that pedo handjob simulator
then they riled themselves up into a frenzy of victimhood about the suggestion that feminists would ban it

I can only imagine how asinine it is over there right now, considering how 4channers react to facebook.

Man, I feel really bad for those long-term supporters. So many dreams crushed in the scenario that has defined our time: rich mega-corporations amassing monopolies and consolidating their power to the detriment of the world.

Sony's VR headset is more comparable to somewhere between the old Oculus Rift Devkit and the new Devkit 2.0, which still wasn't as good as what the consumer release would've been... i guess it will "work" for some less-demanding games, but it's not going to carry VR
