What's not accurate about it? Is Russia a world power? No. They can't project military power, and they can't project economic power.

Can anyone tell me what the hell Russia has gained through any of this?

* They annexed a patch of land that's a net drain and has no real natural resources to exploit.

* They made their neighor hate them more and have invited future conflict.

* They have made the rest of the world hate them and they've lost status.

* They've been kicked out of economic unions and are being sanctioned.

Seriously - how is this a *win* for Russia? What the hell did they win?

1) Nationalism overrides other considerations. I know you know that.
2) It's not possible for Russia's neighbors to hate them more.
3) They think it's transitory, and they're probably right.

I'm not an expert of any sort in military strategy, so I can't weigh properly what the benefit is of Russia controlling the Crimean peninsula, but it seems like there would be at least some benefit there. I suspect there's some implications regarding oil and gas pipelines as well.

Mostly, though, this strikes me as a really good way for Putin to continue shoring up his internal support. This appears to have been a popular move within Russia. My guess is that he's banking on the sanctions going away once this is safely out of the news cycles and the Eastern European NATO members are convinced that he's not going to invade them.

The public argument is reuniting Russians who live there with the Motherland.

The other version is that Crimea is potentially very rich in minerals and gas. Also, there's a nice warm water port which (I believe) is the only one Russia has access to on the Black Sea

And didn't even really have to fire shot, pretty impressive. When was the last time that happened concerning the Crimea?

Humiliation is one of the few things that will make unstable people react with violence.  Hell most of the middle east kills someone when they feel humiliated.   Obama is just poking a rabid dog with a stick to get a few giggles.

Well, Putin see himself as Czar and the oligarchs see themselves as the new aristocracy, so pointing out the reality and weakness of their situation is a big smack in the face.

He wasn't trolling Putin, he was responding to someone pointing out how he now looks foolish for the "zinger" he gave Romney in the debate and trying to keep Romney from looking smarter than he actually is. It's a patented falsehood and Putin will laugh the comments off. No genius move, just Obama being a politician.

Look at what happened during the Cold War: the Soviets didn't built the Eastern Bloc by taking it all at once; it happened gradually over time.

Putin keeps pushing to re-take areas that were part of the USSR. Each time no one stops him, he moves on and takes something else.  Taking the Crimea was his response to losing power over all of the Ukraine, but he probably sees it as a stepping stone to regaining control.

Bullshiat power plays over minor local disputes like this are another reason why Russia will always be a regional power.  Anyone with any sense has known for 20 years now that the new superpowers will be China and India, and that China could beat the shiat out of Russia even now without thinking about it.

It's impossible to make Romney look smarter than he actually is. He's just hair in a suit that lies a lot. There is nothing to work with there.

For all the "Obama is weak!" derp coming out of the Republicans, they wouldn't be doing a damn thing differently than Obama.

Well Romney and McCain wanted to invade Syria and Iran, certainly didn't want to leave Iraq or Afghanistan. So it's not a stretch.

Ummm, didn't the Soviet Union basically take control of the entire Eastern Bloc during their advance to Berlin during the closing days of WWII?
