Did they then feed the lions to the giraffes?

WTF?  I realize that male lions will kill cubs that aren't theirs when they come into a pride, but there was no place they could put those cubs in the meantime?  They had to KILL them?

Last month the zoo's scientific director, Bengt Holst, received death threats over the decision to kill an 18-month-old giraffe, Marius, who was put down with a bolt gun before children were allowed to watch his body being chopped up, dissected and fed to lions.

What the bloody FARK???

What? Kids see animals eating prey on nature shows. Kids see animals getting gutted all the time in real life as well. On farms, going hunting or fishing, etc. Just because it is a Giraffe doesn't mean that it is any different from processing a pig or deer.

It makes about as much sense as having to kill the giraffe in the first place because of DNA.

Hahaha.

Bengt Holst, a known animal hater and completely heartless scumbag, defended the culling...a completely unacceptable crime against nature and a great way to insure Bengt Holst's afterlife in Hell.[citation needed]

Tobias is scheduled to be culled next, presumably along with Bengt Holst, with speculation that their lifeless bodies will be tossed into the alligator enclosure.

What the Hell is this zoo's problem?????
They act like there are no other zoo's or wildlife sanctuaries in the world that would take these animals.

No, their job is to display the animals. Most of the critters in zoos are just interesting, not endangered, and keeping an old lion alive isn't going to do anything to preserve lions as a species.

/Still, though, who knew Danish zoos were such bloodbaths?

2014-03-25 06:07:54 PM
Many Danes were surprised and even angered by the international reaction to the event, with a leading expert on the ethics of the treatment of animals decrying the "Disneyfication" of zoo creatures.

Zoos are a type of amusement park. Lions and giraffes are not native to Denmark.

It wasn't just an old lion though, they also euthanized two cubs.

FTFA: The four lions were put down on Monday after the zoo failed to find a new home for them, a spokesman said. All four were from the same family.

I blame our Russian oligarchs and Colombian drug lords for not adopting these kitties.

An Old Lion? I had no idea cubs a few months old were considered too old to place in another zoo.

The men who put the lions down are now on the run. It's believee they are headed for Sanctuary at the Botanical Gardens of San Francisco.

This is why I oppose capital punishment. Once you start killing people for killing people, where do the chains of justice end?

I'm willing to make an exception for Sheriff 'Arpie though. That's more of a cycle than a chain. He should be treated the way he treats others. He looks like he could profit from a bread and water diet with the guyz on the chain gang any way.

Make the punishment fit the crime. Except for rape.

That's another of those open-ended horrors. Even God got sick and tired of an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth, although it was progress at the time when he leaked the idea to King Hambone of the Great City of Baby Goes Back A Long Way, which was shortened in use to Hammurabi of Babylon.

It's too bad zoos can't teach people how to RTFA:

"Because of the pride of lions' natural structure and behaviour, the zoo has had to euthanise the two old lions and two young lions who were not old enough to fend for themselves," Copenhagen zoo known animal haters and completely heartless scumbags said.

Subby didn't read the article, but the admins knew this would draw in the indignant po$t$ and went ahead and green-lighted it.

The lions didn't kill the giraffe, the zoo did.  Then they dissected him in front a bunch of kids, which is probably the best thing you can do if you have to kill something in the first place.  Lessons about the giraffe's anatomy and all that.  I bet the lions were happy as I doubt they get a tasty morsel like that very often.  Last meal before execution?

There is an upside: I'm sure all the other animals are on their best farking behavior.

You know when you go to a "normal" zoo and half of the animals are sleeping, hiding or laying around? Not at the Copenhagen Zoo. No sir: at the Copenhagen Zoo every animal on display is playing in full view of the visitors during business hours and making sure everyone gets a great picture along with having a good time.

I think giraffes fall under the same category as cats and dogs, where it's bad if they are killed for any reason because they're cute and cuddly.  If this happened to a gator, there'd be no outrage.  Imagine if a panda was culled for some reason.  Internet outrage explosion on stomach.

I'm not so bugged by feeding the giraffe to the lions as I am by the killing of the lion cubs.

I'm wondering if this zoo isn't run by an animal-murdering sociopath.

I wonder what the relocation efforts actually were.  Somehow I'm imagining one email to three or four other zoo admins that he sort of remembered from a conference years ago, who he's not sure even works at those zoos anymore.  Seems the type.
