Don't worry! Rest assured BP will be fined an amount equal to 5 minutes of profit. From that one refinery. It's a harsh lesson they will remember long into the future whenever maintenance concerns come up.

I literally made this argument this morning. "People aren't biting on the Ukraine. We need a new crisis to raise prices for spring break. OIL SPILL!"

By the end of this century there probably won't be anything left of "nature" outside of a couple of sad zoos with no funding populated by almost extinct species that won't breed in captivity, huh?

Oh well, fark it. I'll be dead by then. Sucks for the ensuing generations though. Maybe they'll invent some better prozac or something so nobody cares about the barren, toxic hellscape they live in.

NW Indiana (The Region) is a disease. I grew up in that crap hole and got the F out. Thanks for potentially farking up the lake for your friends in Michigan and Illinois - you know, the people that actually use the lake for more than an industrial dumping ground.

You want industrial pollution, strip clubs with skanks, cigarettes, fireworks, strip malls, shiatty casino boats, chain restaurants and slums to rival any anywhere in the Chicagoland area - than The Region is the right place for you

What on earth are you talking about? The planet/biosphere is going to be just fine, it's human civilization/existence which is going to be hampered by upcoming changes.

I once called the emergency line at a BP refinery, so I'm getting a kick out of this...

/We were handed a list of numbers, told "call all of these and ask if they approve of the merger", and so we did.
//IIRC The list included every phone number used by US facilities.
///Later on: "If you get an emergency line, do not hang up without explaining the problem, and then delete the number from the records.
////Several months later, we started over... with the original list.

And they can't understand why we don't want them 15 miles off our beaches here in Florida.
We have enough problems as it is.

The money says everything is fine, ignore climate change, pollution isn't a problem and we need more fracking/pipelines.

THAT money? I should ignore that? Well, thanks for stating the obvious?

Just for clarity when you say follow the money do you believe that trail ends with climate scientists and their enormous grants or hydrocarbon companies and their lobbyists?

Oh please, it's purely market driven. Don't you see that demand has gone up, and thus they are simply charging more because the market can withstand it? And now look! Demand has gone down, and they are simply charging more because people aren't buying enough to maintain profits! Why don't you get off the oil industry's back already? Sometimes they have to raise prices, and sometimes, alternatively, they have to raise prices.

This doesn't sound like a good plan for getting rid of the asian carp.  Maybe toss a match on the lake and we'll have a fish cook off.

Remember, oil is a natural product. We used to find it just bubbling up in streams and shiat. If I know my hippy logic correctly, the fact that it comes from the ground means it must be completely harmless.

I still live and work here. In fact, the majority of my month has been spent on the promotion "Best of the Region".

/best write-ins include:

Best Home Builder : Assholes all of them.
Best Home Builder: My hippie friend Brad.
Best Winery: You can't use the superlative "best" for a local winery. This is terrible.

You know, if we could just start transitioning away from the power source of the last century and start modernizing away from burning petrochemicals maybe we wouldn't have these problems all the damn time.

Also maybe we'd have an emergency fuel source left in the ground if in the distant future we needed it for a while due to some unforseen disaster or something... Instead of just digging it all up and burning it like morons when we don't even have to. It's a physical thing, it's not farking infinite.

But ooooooh no. The Republicans say "drill baby drill" - which is of course a magic chant which magically makes physics no longer apply to our activities or something.

What really happened.

Actually ... strange story ... I was on a forum last night around midnight and some guy popped in and said he had just started the overnight shift at his BP job on the great lakes and there was some big fuss about an oil leak or such. I don't remember the exact wording. And now I just saw this. Based on that, I'm sure something happened and it's not imaginary.

... Those gas price hikes for no good reason won't be imaginary either, I'm sure.

LavenderWolf: ... If BP farks up the Great Lakes, I swear to all I hold dear I will bring that company down.

Do it anyway.  During the Gulf spill, the greasy air coming inland every time we had a south wind was enough to cause enough people to refuse to get gas from 'em that every Amoco, Arco and BP station in Oklahoma dried up in weeks and haven't been back.

2014-03-25 08:23:10 PM
I hope people will boycott BP.    But I really, really wish the US would just ban them from doing any more business in the US.     They've caused enough damage

After the gulf spill, BP's share price dropped to about $22 (that's when I bought it).  Today it's $45.

So theyre just going to start doing this every week until we accept this as the new status quo?

If corporate execs were forced to live next to these incidents this crap would be cleaned up real quick.
