Stanford is Cardinal as in the color, and the other half of the options being a winged mascot doesn't really fly with a tree

This.  Monty may have feathers, but unless Dwayne Johnson is chasing him, he ain't flying anytime soon.

I wonder why that article and press release don't identify the teams that would qualify.  As noted above, Stanford doesn't work, and neither does SDSU.  Heck, even Dayton might not work, because the mascot is a pilot.  Although, there isn't much chance of Dayton winning.

So, the only definite hit is the Louisville Cardinals.  Also, I would think that Iowa State counts because they have a Cardinal as a mascot (although they are the Cyclones).  But 2 or 3 out of 16 is pretty good odds for Pizza Hut.

So a Christmas tree, a guy dressed up as a guy dressed up as a bird, and a pilot to go along with the only true bird.

4 free wings. At participating locations. During a 3 hour window that starts just after most people's lunch ends. On a Thursday.

Even if a qualified team wins, they won't be giving away much.

I like how the article keeps using the phrase kitchen-fried, as opposed to those other wing places that open up the engine block of a Camaro and fry the wings in the oil pan or something.

2014-03-25 07:10:44 PM
From TFA: If a "winged" team takes home the title on April 7 - that's any team with a nickname or mascot with wings - America can come to participating locations to carry out a free sample four count of WingStreet wings on April 10 between 1-4 p.m. local time.

Cheap bastards. Even if an eligible team makes it, they're doing the giveaway on a Thursday between 1 and 4 PM.

Stanford doesn't have a mascot. The tree is their band's mascot. The band isn't officially affiliated with the school.

True, Stanford states Cardinal's the color not the bird(FWIW Cleveland Browns are short for Brownies-REAL tough, right?) but if Stanford win's WingStreet will have an angry mob bigger than the Oprah KFC mess but AdAge sez as of Monday it's only the Hawkeyes, Flyers & Louisville

Yum is kind of schizo on the Wingstreet concept.  It was a big deal when they started it and they tried to tie it to Pizza Hut to start before it was going to be a stand alone concept sort of like BW3's. It never took off the way they intended so they kept the recipes and branding in PH.  Every so often they'll try to relaunch it as an anchor concept with a Pizza Hut in the back but it normally reverts to PH with Wingstreet offerings.

Yeah, we COULD pluralize our color... but then people wouldn't be able to mock us for our raging case of Harvard-envy.

/ The Tree is the Band's mascot.
// The Band IS affiliated with the school... it's a course that earns a credit and everything!

I like their boneless wings. They don't have enough sauce options, but what they do have isn't bad. I'm no wing enthusiast, though, just a proponent of pizza hut's twenty dollar box deal.

Some places fry their food, freeze it, and then send off to the end point to be sold after being re-heated.  Their wings are actually fried in the kitchen on location, which is the intent of the phrase here.
