Russian people will be in pink of health except in the kidney failing and liver cirrhosis department.  Cheap vodka is plentiful and ready made path to escaping brutal, harsh reality of being Russian.

The sports program, abbreviated to GTO in Russia, was created to ensure that the Soviet Union had a fighting-fit population and will be open to Russian citizens of all ages.

Yeah, okay. Good luck with that. Modern warfare requires more button-pressing, less running around. You know who else really likes to keep their citizens fit and trim? North Korea. But that's because they're ultra-paranoid and have no food to feed anybody anyway.

Stalin once made people exercise. Now another Russian wants to make people exercise. Therefore exercise is a communist plot, and you must fight it with another 64 oz. Doritos™-flavored Mountain Dew for breakfast.

Did I miss something? When did the Ukraine get annexed? I had to double check that it wasn't an RT link that was accidentally reporting with future articles.

HA, technically he is in the "United Russian" party which often calls itself the  "Russian Conservative" Party.

But I agree, the (R) is probably a mistake.

Yep, we got too far away from PE. Nowadays there's barely enough time for them to change and walk a lap before having to move on to test-prep testing.

There's no reason our middle-school students shouldn't be able to all pump out 50 push-ups, 50 sit-ups, and 5 chin-ups by the time they start 8th grade. It would lead to healthier adults as well. Too many doctor's notes got us the fatties we have today.

GTO creation is more of the reaction to relatively poor results of Russia in the Olympics. Many disciplines where Russia have supposedly well-developed traditions have under-performed; the conclusion is "it's because there are no sport clubs available for all, where talents can develop". Currently most sport clubs in Russia are commercial, where only relatively well-off and even wealthy people and kids train; and such people don't have much desire to expand into professional sports.

The program is supposed to provide opportunity and motivation for kids and teens from poor families, and also to provide a way of non-vodka-based recreation for poor/working families. (Yes, people actually play sports for recreation. Umpossible, I know!)

It's actually a pretty good idea. Unfortunately, the actual result is also predictable: all the money will be stolen through widespread corruption.

Incidentally, I haven't read any of these, aside from the headlines to ensure relevancy.  These are all the results on the first two pages of the quick Google search I ran.  AFAICT, the sources are far left, far right, and a few centrist.  So basically, everybody regardless of political slant agrees that you're an uninformed idiot.

Ancel Keyes and his fraudulent study on the relationship between dietary fat and heart disease is what got us the fatties. As a result of that research the government started a campaign recommending a diet heavy in refined grains and low in fat. And low fat often meant high in refined sugar. Many products that have low fat as a selling point are full of sugar and salt.

What about all the boomers who did have PE and got fat anyways? You have to incorporate that mind set into your life. You also have to care about yourself (and your SO). And your kids if you have them.
