Sailor and a Civilian killed, no information on a potential suspect. I hope the situation is under control now.

There's going to be a lot of naval gazing this time.

Nah, no way you'd ever find a "good guy with a gun" at a military base. They need to be more heavily armed.

My home town is 45 minutes from there, and tons of my friends have family who work on Naval Station Norfolk, both as active duty personnel and as civilians.

The culture of this place is tight-knit. The loss will be felt, regardless of whether or not I know them.

You guys do know that firearms are heavily restricted on US military bases, right?

They do. It's just easier to be snarky about a hot button issue than to give a shiat about it.

News said Civilian killed the sailor.  MPs killed the Civilian.  End.

Sailor was probably banging the guys wife.

Yeah, I'm searching around for some other developments. That seems to be the case.

Don't know what the motive was, but at least it was contained before (if?) he wanted to cause more damage.

Normally I'd make a joke about sailors being all about rum, sodomy, and the lash.

But actually, this time I'm calling it. Piracy. They were doing an illicit deal, tensions ran high, bad things happened. That show Black Sails is on now. Everyone thinks they're Blackbeard.

Sounds like a love triangle that went bad or one of them knew the true location of that missing flight and the other one HAD to make sure that the truth remained hidden, even if it meant killing someone and himself!

/not a good conspiracy theorist.

TFA says:

Sailor and civilian killed  Naval police responded, base locked down, then lockdown lifted.

Given that scenario, there are only a few possibilities:

1) Domestic violence, either murder/suicide or a jilted lover situation.

/huh, I guess there was only one.

There's nine of them. 16". Good luck finding shells that are still good, though.

DNRFA or comments. It really seems like you guys are trying to provoke violence. "Going out with gusto" Good luck with that. Great thing about the 2nd amendment is that it isn't needed until they try to come and take our guns. Until then, go fondle yourself. Or, pay someone else to do it. Why not?

2) Gambling debt. Civilian took the collection efforts too far and things got out of hand. They got out of hand, and they weren't lucky enough to live through it.

Heck, the "no cell phones inside base buildings" rule just got lifted because of the Navy Yard shooting.  Guns on base?  Only the jimmy-legs and some of the MPs. Not many, in the grand scheme of things...

Couldn't you just make your own.

All you need is 3 40lb bags of gunpowder and a 16" ball of lead.

Someone did it seems, the responding MP's.

/Proof that armed guards can keep incidents from getting worse.
/Also proof that security was slipshod enough to let an armed gunman on the base.
/thread goes nowhere since it fits no ones politically based arguments for or against gun control.

Very strange story... how the civilian ends up with a gun on the base and shoots just one guy and nobody else, but obviously didn't give himself up since he got shot when security responded...

but it happened ON pier 1?  Hell, you'd have to be in sight of at least a half dozen armed watchstanders... and past the pier guard (whatever they called that, I don't remember).  Unless that's the guy that got shot.

God, that's just so weird.

You are erroneously assuming that facts are relevant to a discussion of firearm regulation.

It's not a matter of security letting him on base... he was a DoD civilian, he was allowed on base.

And guess what, you're also allowed personal firearms on base. You store the weapon in the trunk of your car and the ammo in a separate compartment, and as long as it's registered with PMO you're good.

I don't know about Naval bases, but it's not that hard to get on an Army base as a civilian.

ZZ9 Plural Z Alpha: I don't know about Naval bases, but it's not that hard to get on an Army base as a civilian.

Oh, it's not hard... though there's another level of guards on the pier which are unlikely to let any civilians onto the pier without a good reason (like a technician working on something...)

It's just the circumstances as described that's weird to me:  the one civilian on the pier at 11pm with a gun who shoots a sailor - but just one, instead of going on a crazy killing spree like most murderers prefer these days.

That's what they want you to believe.

If you'd stop being such a sheep for a minute in your life, you'd see that the civilian is a brainwashed death panelist sent by Obama to assassinate the sailor for speaking the truth in the comments section on Yahoo News.

FREE YOURSELF FROM YOUR SOROS SHACKLES.

There was probably a red storm rising in the contractor's wife's snapper, hence the shooting.

Some people, for various and varied reasons, come to the conclusion that other people need to not be alive anymore, and they are going to make that happen.

Sometimes the target is "Everybody" or "Large group of people"  - firearms make those much easier, and they always make the news, and lack of firearms (and explosives, and gasses, and other weapons with a large area of efficacy) would make those less likely, or at least tend to decrease the damage done prior to intervention.

Mostly though, the target is "This specific person" - firearms can make these easier too, but they don't always make the news- certainly not the national news, unless there is an interest-grabbing dynamic involved, such as racial or other social disparities of the offender / victim, attractiveness of offender or victim, or other special social status of offender or victim, such as celebrity, policical figure, police officer, teacher, or soldier.  But guns don't always make this kind of killing easier; it can be easier to slip something into someone's tea while they're out of the room than to point a gun at them and pull the trigger.

The information available so far seems to indicate this is one the latter.  This isn't a gun or gun control issue, this is a "someone decided someone else needed to die" issue.  If there were no guns this would have been a fatal stabbing, or a poisoning, or a bludgeoning, or a strangling, or a crushed-by-falling-grand-piano-ing.

I'm sure this is going to be told to you a hundred times.  But nobody on any military base walks around with a gun (except the mp).  Guns are kept in the armory, not carried on every person at all times.
