So if you wipe away the grime of Kremlin from this article written by the Kremlin's PR department, this would seem to be an announcement that Russian troops have gone beyond the Crimean peninsula to Ukraine proper and started murdering people on the street.

A fat bloated dead guy in Raider's gear (his gear of choice). Pretty much says it all.

Haha hahaha.

Okay, so what does this mean for a soldier (airborne) who was recently told they were bound for Romania?  I know there are many military guys here. Any guesses?

2014-03-25 02:46:50 AM
I could believe he was killed by Ukraine or the West, too. Sounds like he was very keen on agitating for further conflict during a very sensitive situation.

I guess absolutely nobody would cry a single tear over Sasha Bilyi. I would guess it's Ukrainian government trying to get Right Sector under control, if I thought they have any guts; but it's likely some local oligarch cleaning his backyard. Oligarchs currently have a lot more actual power of life and death than the government...

I agree, this guy kind of played into Russia's propaganda about Nazis taking over Ukraine, so they'd have even more reason to off this guy. The fact that the link was from RT is asinine though. I don't trust that source in general, but it's ridiculous to use them as a source in any story that has to do with Russia. Pure state propaganda.

Graphic in the sense that it shows a real dead corpse after a number of hours of being dead, less graphic in the sense that his whole chest is blurred out.

Would someone more versed in this guy's politics care to explain to me why a nationalist Ukrainian in this situation makes for someone deserving of assassination? All I see is murder.

I wondered if it might be part of some backroom wheeling-dealing between the Ukraine and Russia.

"Ok, you back off a little from our border and we'll help you settle a few old scores."

Huh? He wasn't exactly just a nationalist. He was a dangerous guy with a big gun and with some dangerous guys behind his back. He have definitely put himself above Ukrainian law and declared himself to be the law. He refused to disarm or to comply to Ukrainian authorities, and he (allegedly) robbed, threatened and beaten a number of people, including Ukrainian police, Ukrainian government officials, and so on.

But this is exactly that - murder. Be it murder by some rich guy whose interests were touched, by some kind of self-defense group or just by some other Right Sector leader, it's certainly a murder.

The idealist in me wholly agrees. Assassination, liquidation, neutralizing... it's all murder. The realist in me says it could save thousands, maybe even millions of lives down the road if someone domestic assassinated Putin right now.

I know a hard-core pacifist who agrees with me.

Isn't assassination murder every time? That said, a hardcore right wing Ukrainian nationalist is very much a target in a situation like this. Not just from Russia but from Ukrainian powers that don't like how people like him make their revolution look to the outside world.

Honest question--I know literally nothing other than what the article presented about the guy--how does having an ultra-nationalist around make Ukraine look bad when they are obviously the underdog to Russia's invasion? I would think such a no-nonsense badass MFer would help show the world that Ukrainians want to remain independent.

Assassination by Russians, sure, no problem, understood. Ukrainians? Why?

Or, if he's such a destructive force according to the Ukraine gov't, why would Russia want him gone? Is this a case of just "everyone wants him dead to consolidate power" type of thing?

Absolutely nothing.  We've had guys head there and to Bulgaria on 6 month rotations for a few years now.  Many come home with hot Eastern European wives who barely speak English.  I hear it's a pretty nice gig if you can get it.

Err, by shouting "put those Russkies to the knife!" before camera? And speaking not of Russian army, but Russian-speaking citizens of Ukraine? And using similar rhetorics everywhere? For example, he was adamant about the necessity of ethnic cleansing to remove the undesired elements from Ukrainian soil.

He is pretty much the very definition of neo-nazi Russia supposedly protects ethnic Russians from.

If I was Putin, I would give the guy a farking medal. Sometimes I wonder if the whole Right Sector nationalist Ukrainian movement is paid for by Putin. If not for those guys, Crimea would still be Ukrainian; the least Putin can do is to give them some medals. :)

Nothing. Romania is a NATO member country that borders Moldova, and they invoked the charter in anticipation of refugees.

Because one of the main justifications for Russia taking Crimea and possible eastern and southern Ukraine is that they are fighting against thuggish Nazis. A guy like this plays right into Russian propaganda. This guy really is a Neo Nazi, both ultra nationalist and anti Semitic.

I haven't been following the story ultra-closely and know little about Russian/Ukrainian politics, so please do forgive me. It's been engrained in me that "neo-nazis" hate blacks and Jews. Granted, I know the German Nazis pushed pretty hard eastward, the concept of neo-nazis being anti-Russian is pretty foreign to me.
