Because God made them that way. There's even a whole part of the Bible where Adam names all the animals. Whoever wonders such a thing is just illiterate... but no less deserving of salvation. We should do our best to answer these sorts of obvious, everyday questions for them.

Is that a chart, or a paper target from a police firing range?

I assume it involves either a chihuahua father finding a tired and/or trapped Rottweiler. The alternative is a hairless, barking dickmitten.

I've got a chihuahua and when he's feeling scrappy there is no doubt that chihuahuas are related to "real dogs". Pound for pound there isn't a meaner creature on the planet than the mighty chihuahua and if they were bigger the Spanish would have turned back around and forgot Mexico even existed.

My German Shepherd used to sit on my wife's shoulder and watch TV with us.  It was adorable when he was a 4 pound fuzzball.  Not so adorable when he grew into a 95 pound mass of fur and fangs.

/He still climbs onto her shoulder when he hears fireworks.

Given the various crossing of breeds that has led to other breeds, there's no cladogram to be made.  It would be a bush and not a tree.

2014-03-24 07:53:25 PM
um Dogs and Wolves are a single species (in the sense that they interbreed)

They do not have a strict family tree, though you can sort of arrange the breeds into a tree on the basis of trait/gene inheritance. To classify mutts you really need an inheritance graph.

A more interesting question is which breeds have multiple ancestors? Are there cases where say a lap-dog was crossed with a wolf to generate a rat-dog?

This chart doesn't have much to do with genetics. Its not a family tree its just categorizing breeds.

Boxers, for example were bred from Old English Sheepdogs and Bullenbeisers. But the chart has them as "common guard dogs".

// mine only guards against UPS truck drivers

Since they're all Canis lupis familiaris, my curiosity stops there.

This reminds me of "The Periodic Table of the Vegetables"... clever idea, but failed to achieve anything clever in terms of arranging related items into related columns, or any of the other insights incorporated into the real Periodic Table of the Elements.

Similarly here, we have the Corgis which are... Herding dogs, duh.  That's it?  Nothing interesting regarding their relationship with Valhunds, German Sheperds, Spitz dogs, and Dachsunds?

Disappointed. Was expecting a chart to show what breads contributed to what like the extinct Alaunt and Pugnaces Britanniae contributed to the English Mastiff which contributed to the Scottish Deerhound which was used to breed modern day Irish Wolfhounds making them distant cousins to the Bulldog by way of the Alaunt. But that would be too hard having to read wikipedia all day...

Forced to agree on that point.  We have a Chihuahua/Fox Terrier mix and he's meaner than spit.  Bit the roommate's brother in the naughty bits once.  He's wee and old but a complete arsehole.  Still wouldn't really consider him a guard dog but you don't ever want to get on the wrong side of Mustang.  That would be the biting end :) Should've been named Satan instead.

I also have a Boxer/Cocker Spaniel mix.  Seems to be a good mix of working breed/hunting dog.  Weird how dog genetics work, however.  She's a mix of a medium to large breed and a medium breed and yet she's only about 15 lbs soaking wet.  Most people think she's part Pug due to her size, though.

Well, I see they made the mistake of thinking Toy Poodles were the first. Standards were. And they're a combination of hunting/herding/guarding types.

Safely in before, I'd say.  Chihuahuas are all doggie, all the way, although they are, ahem...different...from any other dog breed I've lived with.  Not from foxes, they are lil teeny wolf decedents in a small, fierce and occasionally, charming package.  Any ijit who says otherwise should go back to tending his/her goldfish.

shame it's horribly inaccurate.  Many of those breed are crossbred to get desirable traits from multiple breeds.  Its too frequently nowhere near that linear.

Yeah no shiat, they seem to be taking the groupings from the classes in some dog fancy association, not from how those breeds are genetically related.

I thought they were gonig to kick the chihuahua out of some dog association because it was related to a rat?

That thing's just wrong.  Malamutes, Huskies, Pomeranians, Schipperkes, and Samoyeds are all Spitz-type breeds.

And I think the Chow has some mastiff/Central Asian bear dog up in there, not just spitz group.

Lots of dogs!

I wonder if it includes hounds and greyhounds, mongrels, spaniels, curs, shoughs, water-rugs, and demi-wolves.

The Neopolitan Mastiff is the saddest dog of all.

Also, this is wrong in at least one place.  The Newfoundland isn't a mountain dog.  It's bred for cold maritime weather and water, and has webbed toes and a waterproof coat for it.

/the Otterhound is the second saddest dog.
