As a Houstonian, I am very disturbed by this.

I really, really thought our broadcasters knew not to use caps lock in their articles.

It's a good thing that teenagers mix their selfishness and lack of empathy with Skeletor-like stupidity.

I'm pretty sure that this has always been an option, it's just that, at least when I was in school, very few students felt like it was an option that you really want to take.

Fears of false sexual accusations is one reason for the serious lack of male teachers in K-12.  Sucks, but that's simply the way it is.

I'm hoping that if a teacher was fired because of this, and they found out.. The teacher would immediately be compensated and rehired.

A male friend of mine from HS teaches 3rd grade.  As a former Force Recon Marine, I doubt many parents would be willing to go up against him.

BTW, it's not just students making false accusations!  Parents, neighbors, and administrators will exploit any opportunity if they can to get rid of someone they don't like.  No wonder the average "career" of a teacher is just 3 years!

I'm thinking you missed the point of the article. This isn't revenge for molesting kids. This is making up a story of molestation just because they don't like the teacher.

2014-03-24 12:23:24 PM
Personally, I think the world would be better served by just letting some kids leave class. They don't want to be there? Buh bye. Go play soccer or something in the playground. If you're disruptive, your ass is out for the day, too.

The only problem is we'd need a slightly bigger budget to staff what would basically be a 6 period long gym class for the problem kids and effectively find out why they're there and how we can get them to go back to class, and something productive for them to do while they were there.

I have no trouble with a kid who doesn't want to know how to write book reports if he wants to do something else and works hard at it. You don't want to be in this class, go pick up a trade or refine your sports ability. Getting rid of vo-tech was a huge blow to education as a whole.

Even in that case, the teacher's name is effectively ruined, as some people will never accept that the student outright made things up.  "These stories have to come from somewhere."

-Doesn't matter how intimidating he is, once the media gets wind of a teacher scandal and plasters his face all over the cable and the net he's as good as convicted.  Even if he's exonerated, he'd likely never be able to teach again.

I feel like this could be a useful article.  But instead, all caps lock and unfinished thoughts.

"So I had this teacher right Ms. Keller and I just didn't like her you know so you know what I said let me just get her fired...So I went to the principal and instead of saying I was molested you need to play the victim."

and then no explanation what that means.

I don't mind them, as long as I don't have to watch them every minute to make sure they don't maim themselves or each other, or fight, or scream, or throw a hissy fit...

I think the reason for the caps is that this was just copied and pasted from a broadcast script.  We always type everything in caps for reading off the teleprompter and such.  It definitely reads like what an anchor would be speaking as video plays and a couple soundbytes are used.

The kid felt virtually molested which is the worst kind of molested.

I bet the teacher was in a union too.

2014-03-24 12:34:13 PM
I was briefly worried that my wife's 14 year old daughter would pull one of these horrible lies in order to get me out of her life, so I started using a mic/pocket recorder (or cellphone in a pinch) to protect myself anytime I was going to be with the kid but without my wife.

For instance: I had to be pick her up from school? grab the recorder and leave it on until mom comes home.  No joke.

Still have the recordings, just in case, though the kid doesn't live with us anymore.

2014-03-24 12:35:36 PM
You have to be nuts to teach. There's no upside as far as I can see. Kids today have the power and they know it. If a kid hasn't figured that out yet they have their parents there to remind them they have the power.

Forget teaching, being a lawyer is where it's at. Make money off the kids that refuse to be left behind.

NoahFenze: I'm hoping that if a teacher was fired because of this, and they found out.. The teacher would immediately be compensated and rehired.

It's not that easy.

Once an accusation is made, the teacher is usually suspended, sent to work for the school district in an administrative manner (i.e. away from the schools and away from the students) while an investigation is started. If you're lucky, this only takes a couple of weeks to clear up, because a false accusation would fall under close scrutiny. However, sometimes those investigations can drag on for  years. Why? No clue; you'll never end up getting a dissection of how those go, you'll either get charges filed or the matter gets swept under a rug.

In the meantime, what is the school to do? They can't hire a "substitute" for entire school years; if a teacher is still out by the start of a school year, they'll generally hire a replacement. They can't fire the new guy if/when you get cleared, so you can only hope that there's room elsewhere in the same district. I'm given to understand most districts will at least place you at a school for a year, whether there's room for you or not. After that? Good luck buddy.

It's absolutely, utterly insane how easy it is to ruin someone's career in this manner.

Don't forget that while that whole thing is going on, newspapers are plastering his/her face all over the front page screaming CHILD MOLESTER! And once it comes out that the person is actually innocent, that story is relegated to the last page behind the want ads.

How does having a few recordings where there was no incident prove that there wasn't an unrecorded incident?

I mean, I'd have the same worry, but still.

It's OK now, but for a while this fall/winter, there were some real bad days.  We locked up all the knives,  installed a deadbolt on our bedroom door so we could lock ourselves and our 3 & 5 year old in for safety (we did several times).

If you're wondering, one bad day was kicked off when wife and I refused to keep watching a YouTube video with a bunch of swearing.  After teenager argued about it for 5 minutes, she stormed off saying 'I swear to god I'm going to f*cking kill you both.'  (scarier when you know she had some psychotic breaks)

After getting some outside help, my wife put the daughter in an institution for observation, but she hid her mental illness very well (us and our little kids were her stressers so no psychotic breaks while being observed and she loved the attention).

Now that she's out, she lives with grandma so she can't hurt us or the little children (verbally usually, but we were worried about escalation) .  No joke.  My little kids haven't seen that grandma in months because we won't let them be around the teen.

people be crazy.

My observation is that it (generally) doesn't go to the press unless criminal charges are filed. So far as I can tell, the general process seems to be that the school district investigates the accusation first, to determine if there is anything of merit there; assuming that to be the case, then the police are involved.

Of course, that's also assuming that somebody along the way hasn't purposefully grabbed a reporter's attention, or that a student/parent didn't go straight to the police in the first place.
