As much as I dislike the products Bill Gates has championed, he is right about this:

"The malaria vaccine in humanist terms is the biggest need. But it gets virtually no funding. But if you are working on male baldness or other things you get an order of magnitude more research funding because of the voice in the marketplace than something like malaria."

More money goes to hardons because it's more profitable.  That's why we're so spiritually sick in the U.S. right now... not every thing that needs to be done or should be done will make a profit.
